I had Attorney Parent representing me in a custody matter. I felt like my case and family wasn't important right from the beginning. She advised me to waive a particular hearing and it was the worst advise I could have been given. I am now fighting an uphill battle due to Attorney parents advise which put me in the worst possible position to regain custody of my daughter.

Attorney Parent is extremely knowledgeable about laws relating to schools, disability, 504 Plans, and special education. Having participated in special education meetings with Attorney Parent, I appreciate the way she supports the parent and seeks the right educational solution for her client.

After engaging his services for a flat fee, and a year and half later only some of the things we needed completed were accomplished by Mr. Harrison. However it took many calls and emails to get him to move on the items that he did finalize but there are still many more that needed completing. Very disappointed.

My mother in law is in a nursing home so my wife and I are responsible for her affairs. My wife met with him on her mother's behalf to provide representation in the sale of her house. He indicated to my wife that he needed my 90 year old mother-in-law's credit card and charged it for $1,250 in advance of doing some work for her. When I heard how much he was going to charge I immediately called him and told him not to do anything. I followed up a week later and told him we were going to use somebody else. He indicated at that time he would refund the money but didn't. I have called multiple times and sent a letter to him over the past 3 months to get my mother-in-law's money returned but he hasn't returned my calls or refunded the money. It’s bad enough to grossly overcharge for work we ended up having done for $150 but to not return a poor 90 year old women's money is disgraceful.

What a pleasure it has been to have Mr. Harrison as my attorney. He has provided so much to my case and been able to be my mouthpiece. He helped me to win sole legal and sole physical custody, helped to maintain restraining orders, helped me to stop frivolous motions by the defendant and helped to keep the judge focused on what is important in the case instead of what the defendant rants on about. I would recommend Mr. Harrison to anyone and everyone -- he is very thorough, lets you speak and give all of the information necessary (even more information than is necessary, at times.) He is by the books, knows the code of law and has plenty of volumes in his office for reference if need be. There is a sense of genuine honesty from him -- not a typical slimeball lawyer, but one who is active in seeking justice and will not back down when his client is in the right.

He purchased an owner's policy for us on our property when it did not exist, yet. That day that track of land was just being divided, we had our closing the same day. And when he obtained an Owner's policy for us he NEVER gave us a subdivision endorsement when in fact he knew this was a brand new subdivision just going up for he, himself bought two parcels. I was not able to put in a claim for $17,500 against our policy for subdivision violations since we did not have an endorsement

He started out being very helpful and when my case became more complicated than we expected he became inpatient and verbally volatile. I do not feel that he had our best interest at heart and instead of indicating that he required more money (as we had agreed at the beginning of a flat fee) he pretty much put our case on the back burner. We have decided to go with an attorney who is proactive, will listen to us, work with us and speak with us in a professional manner instead of shouting over the phone.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
