I was referred to, and hired this attorney regarding a custody battle. He literally did and said nothing while in court, and was not my advocate by any means. He was pointless to have by my side, a d did not respond or do anything he was supposed to do. He was very expensive, and was not worth a single cent of what I spent.

Attorney Charles Desotelle is an awesome attorney with a calm and cool trial demeanor. He is both tactful and tactical in court and always thinks several moves ahead. He was extremely prepared for court and always stayed in contact and answered any questions I had. It is without reservation that I recommend him.

I had this attorney for my divorce and in that arena he did fine but there wasn't anything to fight for except when I needed the BS PPO my ex had some stranger conjure up against me in hopes of having me fired and I paid IN FULL for this case and MR. DON'TTELLYOUNOTHING dropped the ball. I never received notice for the court date and neither did the other party which would have been an automatic victory for us. So, if you want an attorney who will go to bat for you and apply all their skillset and knowledge, he isn't the one I'd hire. You'd be better off defending yourself!

He came highly recommended but what should of been an easy win with tons of evidence against the other party, Mr. Hetherington came unprepared to every hearing, knowing nothing about the case. If you care to win at all, go with another experienced lawyer. If his personal assistant/office manager was a lawyer we’d hire her but he is completely and utterly lazy. We’re embarrassed to have him as our lawyer and am looking for another one as we speak!

I was referred to Mr. Hetherington by one of his previous clients. I found Mr. Hetherington to be very professional and compassionate. He was very prepared and was able to get me a great deal and I avoided jail time. His previous career as a police officer gives him a leg up in criminal defense.

Dissapointed...I was totally unprepared and uninformed throughout my entire ordeal. I felt like the representation was very inexperienced. I can talk about what I did, but it's not the real point. He talked me into a plea that I accepted and to my surprise I received an out of nowhere jail time sentence, and I was unprepared, embarrassed and humiliated because of the lack of knowledge. A lawyer is supposed to prepare his clients right? My preparation was a "0" out of ten. I was totally almost always left in the dark and at one point my entire family reached out to him and he couldn't even get back to them on my visitation hours. I paid him upfront and it seemed like once he got paid I was a low priority. I didn't take it personal but in a business sense I felt very under represented.

Linda is a terrible lawyer. Her ego really gets in her way. Poor excuse for an attorney.

My daughter hired Ms. Pylypiw as her attorney for her divorce. Ms. Pylypiw was disorganized, passive and inattentive. She is quite competent when it comes to knowing the law. However, when it comes time to gather the facts, correspond with the opposing legal team and fight for her client, she falls short. Many times when meeting with my daughter she had to refresh her memory of the case, asking my daughter to repeat information and searching through stacks of paper looking for specific documents (while charging us by the hour). Her written skills were inadequate and I actually had to rewrite several of her documents for her. My husband made spreadsheets/timelines for her as well. I really question the number of hours that we were charged in this matter as it seems that most of the work was done by us. She made little effort to try to get an equitable outcome on this divorce and, in fact, my daughter ended up paying the price. I would not recommend Ms. Pylypiw as a divorce attorney.

Horrible communication never reached out to my son during incarceration. Left him to rot in jail rather than get him into rehab program he was sentenced to.

I hired Dean to handle what I felt was a wrongful discharge. He wasn't expensive, but then again, you get what you pay for. Essentially I met with him, gave him the facts as I saw them, and at the end of the consultation after hearing him say that I had "a compelling case," I hired him. It went nowhere, to the point where I had to call him after couple of months of not hearing from him. He talked his way out of that one. I called him again after a few months and he said that he didn't think we could win. Maybe that was true, maybe not. However, nothing had changed between my consultation leading up to this conversation, except maybe he just decided he didn't want to mess with it. So I received a check for what was left of my retainer, although I got nothing for the money that I did spend. So I waste eight months or so when I could have gone to at least a more honest or motivated lawyer. I would not recommend this attorney.

Hired the firm and paid for a service that I never received, eventually had to switch attorneys due to lack of communication and representation. Still have yet to receive a final bill or my money back.

She offered very little guidance and the price was very high! Because of her lack of understanding of the law my case was a total loss based on her failure to know the law. Sad! Had I had a more knowledgeable attorney I would easily have won.

Ms. Burnash agreed to assist me in correcting the name of my Italian born grandfather on legal documents archived within the Genesee County Records; my Grandfater’s name was Vincenzo not James, which was how it was written on death records and naturalization records. I provided Ms. Burnash with all the necessary records to make this correction and present it to the court. I asked repeatedly to see the document she was preparing for the court, she did not respond accordingly, nor did she allow me, her client any prior review of the document. The morning we had our zoom presentation before the judge, she presented an ill written document and she had mis-spelled my grandfater’s name: VENCENZIO instead of VINCENZO. The judge said the document would need to be resubmitted. At this point I decided to contact the Court and pursue this relatively simple matter myself. I asked Ms. Burnash for a refund, she did not respond. Her service was poor, sloppy and not timely. Subsequently, I submitted all the necessary documents, wrote the petition myself and received a court order correcting the name. Ms Burnash was an extreme disappointment. Would not recommend, would not support her for Judge’s position.

As divorce was starting, I Called numerous times, left voicemails, left messages with the secretary, sent text via the website, emailed through the website, and sent several additional emails. Not a single response from anyone. Now that I need new motions filed on my behalf post divorce, I Called several times and sent another email with once again no response. I don’t think this company/business/whatever it is actually exists.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
