Posting this review that was sent to Tiffany Andrews following completion of our service. This was never posted on her firm's website. We are writing to provide an objective review of our experience with Tiffany Andrews and her mediation services. Although Tiffany was pleasant to work with, our overall assessment is that the services provided were average. We were disappointed that we never had the opportunity to meet her in person, despite multiple trips to her office. During our case, we couldn't help but notice that the handling of our mediation proceedings resembled that of a general contractor overseeing a construction project. We encountered unexpected changes in Tiffany's team, with members coming and going without prior notice. This lack of consistency had a noticeable impact on the process and left us feeling unsettled. Another area of concern was the significant disparity between our original cost estimate and the final bill. The cost nearly doubled, which was unexpected and disappointing. Our mediation and divorce proceedings were minimal in complexity, as stated by Tiffany herself. Considering the simplicity of the case, we had hoped for more streamlined and cost-effective services. Throughout the process, there were instances where communication and continuity seemed lacking. We often had to repeat information from one meeting to the next, resulting in frustration and delays. It would have been more efficient and productive if there had been better coordination and a stronger sense of continuity between sessions. In summary, while Tiffany Andrews and her team were pleasant to work with, there are clear areas for improvement. Enhancing client expectation management, addressing cost transparency, and ensuring consistent communication and continuity throughout the mediation process would greatly benefit Tiffany and her team. These learning opportunities could elevate the quality of their services, providing clients with a more satisfactory experience. Tom and Naomi

Matthew took on our case (pro-bono) because it had been so mishandled by all previous attorneys. Here’s an excerpt: "Faced with an admittedly difficult decision, the trial court skirted the question entirely (of what custody arrangement would be in Katie's best interest when mother moves) and issued an order purporting to maintain the status quo. By issuing such an order, the trial court effectively prohibited mother from moving, which is an abuse of the court's discretion... Although it is ultimately the trial court's error that we review on appeal, the error here did not arise in a vacuum. Here, the genesis of the court's error can be traced directly to the failures of the court-appointed mediator and the minor's counsel.” May our attorney, Matthew Purcell, continue to flourish in his practice and know that We will be eternally grateful for his perseverance, intelligence, and integrity. What a better world this would be if all attorneys modeled his attributes!

Mr. Purcell represented me in a divorce and child custody case that took nearly 3 years to complete. His experience and demeanor was invaluable as he guided me through the process which involved manipulation, high conflict, unreasonable requests, false CPS reports and both parties moving out of state. No divorce is ever easy but I’m glad I had him in my corner.

Matt has been my rock through my legal separation. My case was complicated and involved several hearings for the court to determine whether California had jurisdiction over my request for a legal separation. Matt was able to successfully defend my request for a legal separation in California, which ultimately resulted in a stay of the out of state action and resolution of all issues in my case. Matt and his staff consistently communicated with me to make sure that I understood through every step of the process. And if I had questions, I was always able to speak with someone about my case and get answers whenever I reached out to his office. Matt and his staff, Dorinda and Kalli, were professional, compassionate, and knowledgeable throughout this process. Matt was also cognizant of costs and attempted to resolve the issues in my case without the need for court intervention at first. When he was faced with obstreperous conduct by my ex, he immediately responded assertively and prevented all of my ex’s impractical positions. I couldn’t have asked for a better advocate or better representation. I would highly recommend him!

I hired Donald Fowler to help with my personal injury case after a car accident which was not my fault. He has been very nice to work with and he was always very responsive to any questions I had along the way. I'm highly satisfied with the outcome of my case, he worked hard to get me a settlement that I am very satisfied with. There were a lot of medical bills to figure out and get settled, he did a good deal of work to make sure I got the best settlement possible. I would recommend him to friends or family and would hire him again should I ever have any other need for similar services.

Don recently settled a case for me involving an auto accident, and I am so glad I went to him for help. I was referred to Don by a co-worker who had used him for her daughter’s auto accident and had nothing but great things to say about her experience. I decided to give Don a call and I am thankful I did! Don was the calm in the storm. He was so helpful, he answered all the questions I had and he took great care of my case and me. I will always recommend Don to all my family and friends for any of their legal needs.

Don Fowler was recommended to me by my uncle. He was very knowledgeable, helpful and was forthcoming in giving me information to help me determine if I even need to hire an attorney. He took the stress of the medical bills and insurance company away, so all I had to do was focus on my recovery. Don was great on keeping communication and made sure all my questions were answered. There needs to be more lawyers in the world like Don because you can tell he truly cares about his clients. I know if I ever need a lawyer again, I will be calling Don. He went above and beyond to get me a settlement that was more than what we had discussed. Thank you Don Fowler for putting me at ease knowing I was in great hands.

By far the most unprofessional attorneys I have ever met. He will lie under oath. My best friend hired him a year ago and she said he told her to lie to the courts. Definitely shady. He used to be a judge but couldn’t cut it so he was fired. Nobody likes him.

Cyrus Zal was hired to represent myself and others in a lawsuit in San Diego County regarding a sit-down protest of an abortion mill. Hundreds of protesters showed up on a Saturday, and closed the facility for the day. Consequently, myself and many others were arrested for engaging in a peaceable protest, under the pretext of "trespassing". However, California law clearly states that trespassing is, indeed, legal, when done for the purpose of saving a life. For instance, entering your neighbor's home without permission is illegal. But entering your neighbor's home to save their child from a fire is perfectly legal. And yet, because the Judge in the case was a highly partisan Liberal, he not only refused to inform the jury of this law, he even took the unprecedented step of barring my Attorney from telling the Jury why the protesters were there; to save lives. In fact, (and this will shock any fair and reasonable person - regardless of political affiliation), he also banned the word "baby" from even being uttered in his courtroom. You see, if a mother is 6 months pregnant, and she sees her doctor for a sonogram, he will tell her, "Your baby is doing just fine." Even before birth, the child is obviously a baby. But in the courtroom of this Judge, using language and terms that every obstetrician in America uses to describe the infant in the womb, was suddenly verboten. Well, Cyrus Zal refused to accept this blatant trampling of the Civil Rights of his clients. He argued that if this was a civil trial in which a woman alleged that her unborn baby had been injured by negligence, this same Judge would allow the pre-born infant to be called a "baby". So, in a completely selfless and remarkable act of bravery, Cyrus Zal defied this Judge's tyrannical and politically-motivated despotism, and made our case anyway, using the language that he had been barred from saying aloud in Open Court. Needless to say, this Judge was furious, and told Attorney Zal that he would go to jail for Contempt of Court, immediately after the trial, for each and every utterance. Yet, Cyrus Zal was undeterred. He bravely and courageously defended his clients and our legal right to trespass in order to save lives. He was continually shut down by the Judge, and threatened repeatedly. And, yes, the Judge did, indeed, send him to jail after the trial. These were not empty threats. Tyrants mean what they say. But I have never forgotten what Cyrus Zal did for me and my companions. In 56 years, I have never witnessed a single attorney every show this degree of integrity and fearlessness in defending and representing their clients. Name for me a SINGLE attorney on this entire website who was willing to go to jail, (and who DID actually go to jail), in order to make sure that their clients were not railroaded and stripped of their Civil Rights, by a court that wantonly trampled the law? I contend that you could search literally thousands of attorneys here, and this may be the ONLY attorney who possesses that level of integrity. Cyrus Zal is the kind of man about whom movies are made. And just as people like Rosa and Martin had their Civil Rights trampled and abused, and suffered for it by unjustly being sentenced to time in jail, Cyrus Zal belongs in that rare pantheon of people who are willing to suffer for what is right, rather than timidly acquiesce to the whim of tyrants.

I have taken on clients in my law practice where Ms. Sharp was the previous attorney. This attorney is a very nice woman. She was too nice and appeared to have issues with confrontation, especially when dealing with the schools attorney. She couldn't stand up to their attorney and clearly lacked the schools respect which was reflected in their willingness to work with us, but she talked a good game privately with us as parents and we hoped for the best. Most questions we asked she had to get back to us on. She withheld time sensitive documents for weeks and billed us $36K for two IEP meetings, a simple notification of appeal filing and records review over the course of two months. $36K for two months. We didn't spend that much on six months with our previous attorney and he attended a four day trial, three IEP meetings and did full document reviews. The IEP meetings Lynn atteneded I had to do all the talking with the schools attorney Lynn sat there and watched saying very little. She did give us a 50% discount, but if we win the appeal she will bill the whole amount even though she contributed nothing that helped us. While she's been an attorney for several years, three here in California it's clear that she's new to special education law. We found her to be out of her league with the attorney's districts hire here in Sacramento and found that her performance significantly hurt our special needs student. We have been recommended by our current attorney to sue for malpractice. We can't recommend this nice lady because she failed to delivery any favorable results and now we owe her $18K for hurting our chances. Our current attorney has been able to clean up much of the damage, but we have lost huge amounts of potential money in damages that can't be recovered. The purpose of this posting is to say that as parents we have such limited funds. The school districts have huge pockets and have been successful in making these types of cases go away by just financially bleeding parents. It's important to choose an attorney who understands this and works quickly and effectively to get your student what they need while leaving his college fund in tact.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
