Hired Ms. Hoffman for a Real Estate closing as the Seller. Spoke with her on the phone to go over fees and such, to which my file was given to an associate. This associate was not as knowledgeable and I did much of the leg work on the home inspection issues. She left the firm without advising me and then and only then did I receive a call from Ms. Hoffman, who again, pushed my file onto one of her associates, Emily Mari. I signed all papers, giving Ms. Hoffman POA and proceeded to move out of State. Closing was scheduled for the 10th, received no confirmation that it took place, and continued to receive no communication unless I reached out to them. This continued for three days, until deal finally closed. Took two weeks to receive my initial deposit from their office and three weeks after closing received a phone call looking for $1400 for Realty Transfer Fee that she and the buyer's attorney miscalculated. Over paid for services that were below average and would never recommend this attorney.

When I went to see him the first time, he sounded as if he has been handling discrimination cases for years. 7 months and a few thousand dollars after I provided him with information, sorted out what needs to be done (because he doesn’t want to pay for assistant) nothing was done. He was supposed to get paid for filing and deposition, etc. When I finally realized that he didn’t do anything and asked him to refund me and for my file, he then told me that he asked and was told that legally, I should’ve gone through other venues before I seek a lawyer. Either he deliberately kept asking for money because he’s a con or he doesn’t know the law; either way, he is not someone you want anywhere near your case. To top it off, he told me that he KNOWS that he owes me, that he didn’t do anything but he “can’t afford to repay me” therefore, he will do something for me, like if I wanted to start a non for profit or fill out some forms “a few thousand dollars worth of forms?” rather than give me back what he owes me. Not only that he didn’t pay me back, sespite many calls and requests, he absolutely refuses to give me back my file. He promissed me many times that he'll be there and give them to me, and when I go to the appointment, he either is not there, or he simply tells me that he didn't get a chance to get the BOX from storage! They are not heavy, it's a few papers, what box. Stay far, far away from him. He is an embarrassment to his profession.

I hired attorney BELTRE because I I knew her, paid my hard earned money to her to basically make a modification in my family court case, after she received the payment she barely answered the phone, or she will simply transfer me to her paralegal, that never knew anything about my case, because they did not answered my emails or phone calls after couple of months me and my family went to MASS and decided to visit her office, it was a waste of time because they still didn’t k le anything about my case. Long history short, My case was moved to another court and she didn’t even informed me about the change and so many other things she didn’t do at all. Please save your money and time and DO NOT HIRED HER, the worst attorney I ever had, and the others I had were public defenders . No communication, no interest for her customers. Do not hired her

Retained Mark as he recommended I file ASAP. Painted me a picture of a relatively painless divorce. No children involved. Five years and $35,000 later I had to fire him for not getting it done. He never lifted a finger in the way of discovery. I lost 50% of a very large portfolio that was pre-marital and should have never been touched. This amounted to more than his fee. I now pay alimony to my ex while our earnings are very similar. She played the cancer card after being served papers which Mark never doubted or investigated. Obscure and avoided direct answers to simple questions. i.e. yes or no question = 45 minutes on the phone. Plays dumb just to have you explain yourself 6 times. Suffered serious health issues during the five year divorce where he inexplicably disappeared for 6 months not returning any emails or phone calls. I learned of his illness after the case was closed. Carpooled with his buddy, the opposing lawyer, to the early settlement panel. You must be bored by now. Especially if you are a male : DO NOT RETAIN MARK SAKER!!!

Absolutely did not keep me informed. Ended up charging 3 times as much as quoted and never communicated this at any time. Actually hand wrote an additional $500 fee on closing paperwork...no explanation.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
