Back in 2003, Maroulia Pontikas represented me in my divorce through the Women's Resource and Crisis Center in Galveston. By a genious move, she won my case against my abusive husband. I will never forget her. I am forever grateful. She was sincere, committed and sympathetic.

Maroulia is a nice person, this is not a personal attack. Professionally, she probably would have been better suited to be a corporate attorney - where emotions and feelings are not required. Divorce can be an emotional roller coaster and it would be nice to feel as if your attorney seemed to care on a human level not just a financial level. She seemed to only go through the motions. I did not see any passion from her regarding my case, which I think is was detrimental to me as her client, especially in Family Law. She showed insincere(forced) sympathy and in my option bullied in court by the other attorney. In my opinion, she does not seem well equipped to be a family law attorney, which is demonstrated in her current feedback ratings. My side had around 8 witnesses which included professionals and compensated experts. Not one person that served as my witness was impressed and all advocated I seek new council. But due to financial considerations, I was "stuck" with her. If your divorce case is easy and clean and you only need an attorney to go through the filings and process, then she would seem to fit that scenario well, but if it is a contested and emotional case and you want an attorney you feel is there for you not just in a robot attorney capacity, I would not consider her as attorney. I am sure she is a great person outside the office, but as a Family Law attorney, it just doesn't seem to suit her well.

I’ve had to repeatedly text and leave vms to file papers or status of my parents probate. Lots of promises but no follow thru. Don’t take my money if you can’t do timely filings and have multiple excuses. Not happy and very frustrated and disappointed ☹️

If I could give 0 stars, I would. My son, mother, and I all went to his un-airconditioned, mess, of an office. When I say mess, I mean it. There were other defendant's cases everywhere, papers all over the floor, just a f****** mess. No air conditioning. Totally embarrassing. I wish someone, who knew what they were doing, and didn't work for the DA would contact me. 409 211 1061 I have a legitimate case. 21 CR 3939. Assault on a police officer while intoxicated in a hospital. Watch patrol vehicle footage, as well. Thank you.

im sure mark was a good attorney 10 years ago, now he is just arrogant and really believes himself to be a "super attorney." He will not listen to his clients, what he thinks is best is the direction he will be going with zero regard to his clients wants or needs. God forbid you ever question his judgment

I spent 4 months in county, before I bonded out. He refused to file bond reduction paperwork that I requested to be done within 3 weeks of me being incarcerated. The paperwork was never filed. He came to see me 2 times in 4 months, and then was confusing my case with other cases he was involved in. All the way up to the time I signed my judgement he was giving me wrong information about what the D.A was offering

This lawyer does not return phone calls, spends months not getting the most basic information required, have to go to his office to ultimately find him, sends you off to get hard to get records he then does not even use, dies not remember extremely important facts in your case. I actually tried to fire him and get a different lawyer and he talked me out of it promising everything was going as planned, I was ultimately left hanging on my own once it was too late to get another lawyer, he caused irreparable harm to my case , strongly advise you find another lawyer

She don’t have the ability to work multiple cases, instead of letting charges get dismissed due to lack of evidence or no evidence at all she puts them on the back burner and forgets there are innocent people with bogus crimes hanging over their head she does not return calls or emails to discuss cases she is only about the ones she can convict.

We didn’t hear from her for 18 months and then her receptionist called and implied we were evading and and told us we needed to pay an additional 6000 dollars for work we were never informed of and told us that there were more charges pending Nightmare

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
