I have purchased/sold several homes and refinanced over the years. This was by far the worst experience. It should have been very simple. I was purchasing from family and gave him all that was needed. He made lots of mistakes and then tried to say I told him wrong. He messed up the paperwork on my end. He then messed up the paperwork on my family members end. She said he lied and told her she filled it out wrong however she still had the initial copy and saw his errors. She had to go to a notary twice at her cost due to his mistakes. I had to take a day from work to drive to another county to pickup paperwork because he said they were processing it slow. When I arrived, I was told they hadn’t received payment from him to release the paperwork. We finally got it closed after over 2 months. The day of the closing he hadn’t even called and told me the time or how much the cashiers check needed to be. Now nearly a year later, I still haven’t received a copy of all the closing documents. I’ve called several times and never had my calls returned. My family member said she also never received a copy. The only paperwork I got was the HUD statement. I paid for title insurance and never received that paperwork. I would never recommend or use him again. I wish I could give less than a star

Boyce Garland has represented me on many occasions ranging from property lawsuits to rather serious traffic offenses in all cases. I was very pleased with the outcome. I was also very satisfied with the work. Mr. Garland put in to all of my cases at an affordable price. I would highly recommend Mr. Garland for traffic citations or or any other thing related to traffic offenses Mr. Garland has only represented me one time on a property lawsuit but many many more times on driving Issues which I feel he’s very capable of handling.

Mr Richardson is not a good attorney. You would do just as well if not better by representing yourself. He has been of no help to me. He won't take appointments and he never returns phone calls. He acts like he's paying you instead of the other way around. He definitely does not have the defendants best intetest. Not a good public defender at all.

He represented me in case where I needed to modify my parenting plan. He sat in another room with my ex and giggled and seemed to be more a friend to my ex's attorney than my representation. He kept calling me by another name because he couldn't even remember mine. He was nice until it was game time and didn't care about my case or what was best for my child but rather to just getting it done quickly. I'm still dealing with visitation interference and he did a horrible job with the parenting plan. I absolutely would not recommend Mr Kakassy to any parent who is dealing with co-parenting issues. He's the worst I've ever experienced.

Whatever you do don't hire this man to plea your case in court !!!! My husband is a 100% service connected disabled Marine Corps Veteran, and Mr Garland did not present our case very well at all!! He got a good retainer fee , he didn't do a good job at all !!! He said we could appeal but his retainer fee would be considerably higher. He didn't present enough evidence or fight hard enough for us , he told us he would handle it. He told us to meet him @8:45 am to meet before court and we were on time and he showed up 4 minutes before time to go in the courtroom, he was unshaven,he kept popping his partial plate in an out of his mouth,he got up and walked out just before our case was called and the judge or us knew why he left. He needs to retire!!! He has no game anymore! Consumer Beware! Don't hire him if you want to win your case, because he doesn't know what the heck he is doing!!! Horrible experience! Plus he was having a one on one with the other party.

This guy literally didn't put the right name on the case for my apartment complex 4 times and everytime we went to court our case never even got heard and we got continued because it needed to be fixed, even after I provided him with the correct name. Got a video of his own assistant saying he’s not qualified for his job. He got angry and was unprofessional when I asked for refund and kicked me out off his office. Then tried to trespass me from ever coming there. I have all this on video. I also paid him completely what he asked to take the case and he kept emailing me for more money for working .01 hours. He emailed me receipts and it would have missing payments and I had to prove it wrong with receipts so don’t ever get this lawyer.

I met with Lauren several times. The last meeting I addressed my situation as being very serious and was preparing to start the filing of papers. Soon after my last meeting I had a very important issue with my spouse and called Lauren's office only to be put off & assured by her PA that she would let her know. I never got a call back. I waited & called her back only to be put off again and again did not get called back. I was forced to decide to seek new counsel. When we did meet she gave me good info to start on collecting information. Lauren also made me feel uncomfortable as she would never look at me. My Mother always told me not to trust someone that will not look you in the eyes when speaking.

Paid my retainer fee as he requested, I sent him an email detailing my case so he did little work, if any. Never heard back from him about when to meet and where for the court date. I got to court, he showed up way after and I had already left. My husband had been calling and calling him and his office nor him ever answered. I decided to change lawyers and being I hired him 4 days prior, I just asked him for my retainer back- he refused and made a fake invoice saying he did a bunch of research that equalled the exact amount of my retainer- how ironic eh? He claimed to have called me and emailed me telling me when and where to meet him get never sent any backup emails or phone records. This man is a poor excuse for a lawyer-and he knew o was strapped for money and still he Kept my money. Take my advise-don't use him, he has no reviews but bad reviews for a reason!

We hired Mr. McSpadden in 2006 to handle child custody/child support case. We did the legwork of drafting a parenting plan. The only thing Mr. McSpadden did was to appear in court one time to have an extension granted to our case, and that was because he had not been active in getting information from the other party. Because of a lack of action on Mr. McSpadden's part, we ended up getting served with a countersuit from DSS. We were forced to hire (thankfully) another attorney who turned out to be very competent and proactive. However, we were not able to recover any of the $2000.00 retainer that we paid to Mr. McSpadden for a one time court appearance.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
