He's definitely not for the victim or victims family. He talks a good game about Justice but acted like he didn't care that my son was murdered and a victim. He gave a murderer a slap on the wrist. He talks down to you like you're nothing. He treated me horrible and my family. He's uncaring and just a mean person. I hope you don't get him to represent your case.

This attorney was assigned to me through a pro bono service and as an attorney you are required to complete a certain amount of pro bono services per year. Bowman basically just tossed my case right out the window and never contacted me back with legal advice or anything to help me what so ever PLUS never returned my notes I took. THEN had the audacity to contact the services I was using and told them we were done, he had done his part when he IN FACT did NOTHING and they closed my case. My case is now having to be re-opened but I have not gotten my notebook back and am very upset by this. Super unprofessional and downright cruel to treat someone that way!

I went to Mr. Berry needing minor adjustments to a Will and two Power of Attorney documents that were only 5 years old. He demanded a retainer of $950 but said there would be a refund if the work did not require the requisite hours. I briefly discussed another legal matter with Mr. Berry, but only retained him to work on updating the three documents. After doing work that should have taken an experienced attorney no more than a few hours, my bill came to exactly $950. I am taking him to Small Claims Court.

I hired him because of the Avvo ratings & it’s hard to find a lawyer that sides with the Tenant. I paid him to take me off of a lease & to get me back my security deposit. I was taken off the lease 3 weeks after hiring him, and still have no security deposit. This guy is a NUT SHOW. Whenever you call into the office, he is NEVER around. He never returns your calls in a timely manner & he does not know how to communicate with clients. Seriously ... I would never recommend this guy to anyone. Regardless of how desperate they are to get out a lease or whatever case they may have. Never. Not only does he not respond to his clients messages on time but he has other “people” behind the scenes working on your case & you don’t even know who these people are, you don’t get updates about what’s going on with your case. Do not hire this guy if you really want your case resolved with 100% satisfaction. I luckily was able to recuperate the money I lost, paying him + the security deposit, but I wouldn’t send his info to my worst enemy.

This lawyer has the worst personal hygiene of any lawyer we have ever had to speak with. Her office smelled so bad that people in our corporation now refer to bad bathroom smells as laying a "Duffy". She incessantly spoke about her daughter who lived in Germany who apparently refuses to live with her. We assumed it was the smell

Tom Maddox didn't seem to have my best interest a heart. He has built his record at the expense of his clients. He will not reach any higher than the lowest hanging fruit. During my property loss case, where my truck was totaled by a drunk driver, I not only lost my truck, but also my business. Tom was not at all interested in pursuing the loss of my business because he was afraid to ask for it from the defendants attorney. I sent in two invoices very early in the case to charge to the defendant, I ended up paying these invoices totaling almost 350.00 out of my portion of the settlement. I know this is a small amount, but this goes to show he wasn't will to demand that from the defendant. He doesn't hesitate demanding money from you. When you hire Tom Maddox, he make you feel like the defendant. Stay far, far, away!

Not even sure where she got our names, then could only contact her through her assistant. A ten minute meeting resulted in the production of documents (updated will documents that only reflected changes in NC law) without any discussion of fees, resulted bill for $495.00 for services. This was followed by a "negotiated" fee for services. All good, no then there is a follow up note that says when you come to sign the documents it will cost you another one hour which will result in a fee more than the initial charge.

Terrible experience with this attorney. I went to see him because he spoke Spanish, he is latin and I had the idea that he would care and understand my situation. Awful representation in Court for my Family Law case, did not help me in any way. He might have felt intimidated by my ex-husband's attorney, I do not know, but at the end he did not help me at all. But yet I had to pay his attorney fees. Be careful.

I emailed Mr. Nelson to ask if we could set up a time to meet in order to go over title information on a property we were trying to purchase. I asked what his fees were and since the fees were higher than other title and escrow companies we decided not to meet and never agreeed to the fees or services. We also never received a title report. Today, randomly, we received a bill for $225 the day after Christmas! We never met, never received any services and never agreed to services, verbally or written. This is poor business practice and also feel that, as a lawyer, Mr. Nelson has poor ethics.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.

Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?

  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
