Andrew is an amazing lawyer and his work helped me have a favorable outcome in all of the cases I was dealing with as a defendant in both Rockingham and Shenandoah Counties. I highly recommend him and his office staff.

I don't believe Derek Whetzel done all he could for me in the past. $4,000 and it was a waste. I found him outside the courthouse laughing and conversing with my ex husband's lawyer. He didn't fight for me but instead seemed as though the ex had two lawyers, one that I was suppose to have and that I was paying for. He was like a cricket in the courtroom. He then sent a bill to me after all was said and done and hadn't done anything. Not a good lawyer in my opinion. Save your money!

How this place has any stars at all is absolutely astonishing ! Blue Ridge Legal Service is nothing more than a service to evil and are intent on destroying marriages , destroying families , destroying reputations , destroying men , and destroying people in general these are the worst most evil people you will ever encounter in a lifetime . What B.R.L.S. is really good at is taking evidence out of context and a total misuse of the law to raise statistics for the achievement of more funding with a total disregard for helping anyone but themselves these people are of the worst character in any society , total trash ! I cringe at having to give them one star to be able to post the truth about such a useless , rouge and evil entity ! these people are nothing more than walking trash cans that need to be put to the curb !

I filled out the contact information... twice through the website to schedule my consultation because I am profoundly deaf so I rely on e-mail or text for effective communication. Yet I hadn't received one response from any of them. So I called their law firm in Harrisonburg area and learned they never received my form. They advised me to fill out an intake form before I speak to lawyer within 24 hours. So the next day, I checked my email and nothing from them. I called just right before the meeting with a lawyer, turned out they had my email address wrong. So I finally got a chance to talk with a lawyer through my interpreting service to interpret for me, the lawyer sounds nice on the phone. So she emailed me asking for my father's full name and I replied back right away. Then after for a while, I sent a follow up email and no response. Another follow-up email recently, and she finally responded by the end of day. She said she spoke to one of the partners at the firm and there is nothing I can do due to other party's consent. She has tasked the office manager to send my dad a contract to sign. Still no response so my dad and I were able to find a lawyer from different law firm to help us out... I am not sure if it is normal to take a while for Cravens & Noll lawyers to respond to clients. I am a Legal Resource member and waste my time.

Saw Mr Elledge back in January. Paid $300 for consultation, was told he will take my case but will be out of town but available via zoom to get information to fill out a form. It is almost March, and yet to hear from him! I called a few times to be able to get my info in. receptionist very rude and empty promises that I will be contacted by him! Nothing yet! Excuse for a profesional!! Update! After 2 Months the lawyer finally decides to send an email seeing if I still am interested or not and to send $1000 for his service. He thinks people will just wait for his service for months.

Terrible attorney. Unable to communicate, or negotiate. Only goal is to run up as many billable hours as possible. No good advice and sets no goals. Just seeks any settlement even if it is not a good one. I think she hates men and does not care about her clients. Not worth your time. One of her former employees says she gets nothing done.

Worst experience I have ever had with an attorney or firm. Litten in Sipe has an impressive building on the outside but inside is a different story. Very poor customer service and even 5 minute returned calls are billed at least three-quarters of an hour. That is if you can get them to give detailed billing records. Melisa billed for more than 3 hours reading the Landlord Tenant Act. If she is billing herself as a professional shouldn't she be familiar with basic Virginia Law? I was very unimpressed with her ability to give a clear and concise argument to the judge. He looked at her a few times and asked her to rephrase her statement, giving her a chance to accurately quote the law. I did win the case but no thanks to Melissa, I could have done better without her and saved almost $6000 in legal fees. Before hiring Melissa or anyone at Litten and Sipe be sure to get them to give you in writing their fee structure and agree to give you itemized billing records at the time they bill for service. I have since spoken to others that have had the same problems with her firm. They send a summary bill without any specifics and fight giving anything itemized. I was told I would have to pay for an hour or more of Melissa's time additionally if I wanted to see what she had listed for the time she billed. Since time is all a firm has to sell, shouldn’t they be entering this information anyway into their computer ? She is a very pleasant person and perhaps someone you may want to have as a neighbor, but in no way demonstrates her 16 years of practice with skills or knowledge. Choose someone else if you want a good value for your money.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
