I had a terrible experience through my divorce largely in part due to this attorney. Poor communication, inability to state the facts and/or give advice... more concerned about himself than his clients. Mr Bock lacks communication skills, empathy, and is unorganized. Has his clients do most of the work though doesn't hesitate to charge. Once my divorce was settled I was promised a certain amount of money from equity from my house and was shorted a significant amount... he back dated things that he allegedly didn't charge me for in the past. I would not recommend this attorney to anyone going through a divorce. My divorce ended in July... I waited to write this review until now to be sure my frustrations were in fact largely related to his counsel and they certainly are.

Ryan Cari and Chris Anderson are amazing and have provided great service for my business and I in the past but did not handle divorce. I have referred them several clients with the excellent service from them. I was passed to Sam Cari to handle my divorce and my unfortunate experience began. I was charged for everything yet had no progress in my divorce and it dragged on! The divorce was very simple (no children and only a house to sell) yet became complicated for no reason. I was charged for every photocopy, email (even emails and calls from the man I was divorcing if he had a question or comment), and quick phone call with a question (rounded up to the nearest 30 minutes). I fired Sam Cari and hired Angela Olson in Hudson. She did a swift, terrific job for a fraction of the cost. Despite the high fees and poor service, Sam will not negotiate the bill to reduce his ridiculous charges despite my attempt to reason with him. As with most reputable businesses, if the customer has a poor experience the fees are usually reduced. Not here...

My only experience is with Chris. I hired him paid a retainer ($5k if I remember correctly) for a small business matter. It was over a customer trying to personally Sue me. I had zero personal involvement in his contract or pricing, and our contract was between the company and the customer, as well as having a very strong arbitration clause. Rather than fight them and make them abide by the contract, Chris almost strong armed me into settling. I paid the customer a portion (shame on me I guess) then Chris and the law firm sued me for addition “fees”. I personally think these people are fraidulant in there practices and violate their commitment to their clients. They charged me around $10-15k for a paper push. Go elsewhere!

If you’re looking to Hide all your riches from your weak pathetic greedy ex thinking she is entitled look now further. Shark slimeball lawyers like this one will do anything to win and won’t be satisfied until this young mother is brought to tears finding out her car is her and the kids new home. Her not contributing and staying home with a kid doing nothing while the man of the house makes everything is finally going to get what is his. Rose sees to that and is paid double most lawyers around. Woman rights are done around here she’s going back to the 50’s with her clients and maybe the family unit can make a come back.

As a resident of this community, I am appalled that criminal charges were not brought forward on the outrageous crimes of the teens involved with the Apple River incident. Not enforcing the laws we have and removing consequences for breaking laws is no way to ensure the safety of a community.

Obviously corrupt. This entire department and community are now a stain on the United States of America and our Constitution. Rather than prosecuting and holding accountable local Teenagers and adults acting criminally in the Apple River incident, This office (and the local community) ignored a man's right to self-defense, and prosecuted him for defending himself. The whole situation was quite tragic. However, the only real victim in the matter was the man this office prosecuted.

This guy will not fight for your rights . This guy will not provide you with any paperwork due to the fact he's to lazy to print any of it off. I was not happy with what I had to plea to an had no other choice. I do not recommend this guy for counsel.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
