I did not have a good experience with this law firm. During the initial consultation, I was told they could pursue one particular avenue that would be very advantageous to me. After this conversation, I signed the paperwork and was assigned two attorneys (I did not realize I would be paying two people to do one job). They would hold regular "meetings" and bill me for their time. The notes of these meetings were very vague and did not explain specifically what they discussed and the direction they planned to take. When I asked about the frequency and the lack of detail pertaining to what they discussed and/or their upcoming strategy, I was told that these meetings were a little more frequent than most and the lack of clarity/detail was how they did things. I go the impression that they didn't want to be questioned and that I should just let them do their job. After questioning them directly about two particular items, I was told by both attorneys that they couldn't pursue either one. The issue I had was that each of their "meeting" summaries had both of these topics listed. I didn't understand why they kept making this a topic of conversation and charging me when I was told nothing could be done about them. In the end, I paid over $6k and the only change that occurred happened when they requested the court review some payments (which were never in question) and they found a mistake that ended with me paying more out of pocket. It's my opinion that they didn't have anything to work with on my case from the initial consultation but took it anyway. Then they proceeded to hold meetings and continue to bill me to meet their billable hour quotas. There was no accountability and I was basically writing a blank check.

Heather was a great attorney in our adoption case. She communicated regularly and really cared about our situation. Going through the legal system is never ideal and she made it much more pleasant. I would absolutely recommend her and Cordell.

Dave Truman is an excellent attorney. When I was terminated from my position (wrongfully in my opinion though my former employer never admitted it), Mr. Truman took me on as his client. He is knowledgeable, hardworking and very responsive. In fact, when I first called him I was very surprised when he answered the phone himself. I was expecting to leave a voicemail message but instead I got to speak with him immediately. Mr. Truman walked me through the process of appealing my termination and he handled all settlement negotiations. As you can imagine, this is a very stressful process but knowing I had someone on my side with the necessary knowledge and experience made it more manageable. I’m very satisfied with the service I received and am happy to recommend Mr. Truman.

Very unprofessional individual. I was given his name from one of his clients, who were grossly negligent in filing my income taxes. Mr. Laudato, had a very uncaring attitude, did not respond to my inquiries to this date. Very pompous demeanor. again, I was referred to him to obtain information on my errors. Do not use him or Zappitelli's for your financial needs

I am involved in a very messy trust situation, so, I contacted Nicholas Laudato to see if he could help me with that. We had an in - person consultation at his office, we discussed my case, and we discussed what I wanted him to do. Before I left his office, Nicholas Laudato told me that I would have to pay him hundreds of dollars in advance just to look through my documents in order for him to decide if he would take my case. Later that day, I emailed Nicholas Laudato some of my documents, and he promptly increased the amount of money that he insisted that I pay him in advance just to look through those documents. He also made sure to remind me that this required payment in advance of hundreds of dollars was only for him to look through my documents in order for him to decide whether he would take my case, and it covered nothing else. I have communicated with many attorneys in my quest to find the right attorney to help me with my legal issues. Some of those attorneys have been rejected by me, some of those attorneys have told me that they will not take my case without even looking at my documentation, and some of those attorneys have told me that they will not take my case after they have looked at my documentation. Nicholas Laudato, however, is the only attorney who has ever insisted that I pay him hundreds of dollars in advance just to make a decision if he will, or, if he will not, take my case. What a rip - off!. That is how Nicholas Laudato does business, so, you would be wise to avoid him, and The Probate Pro.

Mark was OK at best. Always had the feeling that he was a little on the shady side. He seems to rely on family connections rather than talent or actual legal work. I must admit, my case worked out well, but I always had the feeling that there was more 'angling' going on than anything else. Ask, kept upping the fee as time went in. He said my case was more complicated than he thought.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
