Family Law Attorney Paula Schaefer is simply AMAZING! READ THIS REVIEW I struggled for 3 years to find a family law attorney who actually listened, treated me like a human being, and cared about the details of my divorce case. I went through 2 attorneys and thousands of wasted dollars before I found Paula. I used to get so frustrated and say "I wish I was rich so I could afford an attorney who actually cared about my case as much as I do" Well I'm not rich, but I found an attorney in Paula, who treated me like I was. Her fees are competitive with the Indianapolis area Marketplace, but you will get so much more from Paula than any other attorney. She is kind, steadfast, honest, professional, cool under pressure, and a classy attorney who will never make you feel like you are unworthy of great legal representation. Paula is also a mom so she knows what you are going through. She has the right combination of experience and compassion and I promise you from experience, that it is rare to find these qualities in an attorney. She returns phone calls, responds to e-mails, Has an incredible legal staff, and prepares thoroughly so you are ABSOLUTELY ready for a hearing if necessary. I can not thank her enough for the way she treated me, the way she valued my input, and the way she cared about my case. So why am I writing this review for Paula Schaefer? Because she has totally restored my faith in attorneys. Paula you are the best and I am so grateful that I found you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

If I could give 0 stars I definitely would. If you are looking for a good law firm, please don't stop here. Everything that everyone else has said is true! In the beginning, when they are trying to gain your business they are good. After you hire them, it all goes South. No return calls or emails. I disengaged this firm in August and I am still trying to get my files, which they said they do not have, and the remainder of my retainer. They did absolutely nothing and are ignoring my request for my files and retainer. Run away from this place!

When I first hired her, Meghan was great! Confident and seemd to have a plan for my case. Then she just stopped...everything. Suddently she stopped talking to me or calling me back at all or taking my calls, even phone calls we scheduled ahead of time, and would not return emails or calls ever. I asked her to take herself off of my case but she never responded to that either and never filed the papers so she still shows up as my lawyer. Ver disappointed.

Megan never had time to meet or talk with me, and when we met with opposing counsel for a settlement agreement, she did not advise me or let me know what were my options were—because of this I lost everything. She admitted the next day that things fell through the cracks from her end, and that she needed to hurry things up because she needed to prepare for court. Is that working in the best interest of your client? Then, one year later I get a bill for $8,000. Office is very unorganized. Megan should stop practicing law as to not ruin people’s lives.

I hired Kelli Young because I was trying to protect my child from his abusive father. If you are having to hire a lawyer to begin with, then it's probably a terrible time in your life. It was like pulling teeth to get her to communicate with me, and when she did she was sending documents that I had to constantly correct her - like NAMES and dates of birth or inconsistent details. She is one of the most incompetent lawyers I have ever had the misfortune to work with. All she cared about was payment, and even though we paid our bills on time, she decided in the midst of our case that she didn't want to work on it any longer. DO NOT HIRE!!!!

Kelli was my attorney as I was going through my divorce in 2014-15 and the hectic time shortly after 2016-17. She helped me navigate the unknown territory of child support, visitation, and helped develop a peaceful solution that would keep my ex and I from continuously going back to court. Her expertise in family law truly shows and I would recommend her to anyone facing a similar situation.

Kelli was my attorney for over a year in a personal injury case. During this time, I repeatedly attempted to touch base with her to stay abreast on the details. For some reason, after never hearing from her, i had an inkling that she was not putting any time into my case. I then began calling her secretary who assured me that she was relaying my messages to Kelli young, and asked that my calls be returned. However, Kelli never bothered to return any of my calls. After over a year and a half without any reasonable, or just cause, in the 11th hour, she decided that she did not wish to continue her representation. She then had her secretary to contact me to pick-up my file. She too, offered no explanation. I first assumed that they had received an offer, but that was not the case. I suddenly was left to search for another attorney at the last minute; before the statute of limitations ran out. Thank goodness I found a reputable attorney just in time to take over the case. Within 6 months, the new attorney got me a nice size settlement. He worked diligently, and did more work in that short time than Kelli did in almost two years. The truth of the matter is that she was simply too lazy to work. She's a joke & not qualified to represent a caged hamster. To this day, she never extended any common courtesy as to provide an explaination. I feel that i deserved that much at the very least. Don't waste your time with this attorney. You will only regret it. No need to post my name. She knows exactly who I am. Too bad they dont offer a zero score; as that is exactly what I rate her.

Giving Jane 2 stars as she has the potential to be a good lawyer however when she represented me in 2022 as a Keffer-Hirschauer attorney I was disappointed on many occasions . Jane completed a lot of work last minute, which might have been the result of Keffer-Hirschauer overloading their attorneys with too many cases. Regarding spousal maintenance, Jane wasted months before asking the court for a hearing on spousal maintenance, and Jane did not follow through with the request once filed. Jane recommended signing certain financial agreements without communicating the possibility that future hearing dates may be rescheduled or extended, which lead to me being left without funding for many months. Lastly, a few weeks before a scheduled mediation and final hearing date Jane was either fired from Keffer-Hirschauer or left Keffer-Hirschauer on her own, (I have not been given a reason for her departure from either side) which then extended my mediation and final hearing, left me in a desperate financial situation and resulted in an exorbitant amount of legal fee's as I had to start over with a new lawyer.

Mr.Hoover does not call, does not call back, and does not give you information about your case. Mr.Hoover was hired to represent me in my child custody case. I have called multiple times and no response from Mr.Hoover. When Mr.Hoover would call it would be the day of the actual court date. Mr.Hoover does not communicate, is not professional and does not communicate at all about the case. I had to hire another attorney to represent me for my child custody case. It's been 3.5 years since Kevin Hoover of Hill Fulwider represented me and I'm still having issues as a result. He botched my child support case, won't respond, and won't even remove himself from my case, so I can't even get information from the courts. Every time I try to get information on my child support case, the child support prosecutor won't communicate directly with me because he is the counsel on file. I can't get information, can't get them to drop him, and can't get him to drop himself. Even when the prosecutor sends my case information to him, I've never heard a peep. Now, I have to hire another attorney just so I can get basic information about a reported arrearage. It's completely ridiculous!!

He was rebuked by the Judge for his behavior in Court and did not even call me by my correct name. After the hearing he refused to speak with me and I had to get a copy of the final ruling from my ex-wife. He ignored almost 100 points of contact from me in the six weeks after the trial. Although this was my first case it has taken this lawyer almost 4 years to settle my case. Her law firm claims that it was mostly defense issues. In which I know it was not. I have only spoke with her roughly a handful of times and that's being generous. I would figure a lawyer takes in a new client in which they guide them through the process of the case instead of me being blindsided by negligence. I have always contacted her and she's only returned one call. I hope that no one ever has to settle like I was forced to do because I believe they are too lazy to do the foot work. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND HER TO AN ENEMY. Needless to say someone else took over my case within the firm and settled 2 years later.

I first encountered this attorney when my father had her do his will years ago. I then had her do mine. She seemed fairly knowledgeable but somewhat unfriendly, business oriented, not very chatty. As the years progressed, I used other resources regarding my will and had no contact with her until recently. My father had her create a trust as well as his will. In the last couple of years we had seen a marked deterioration in his health mentally. He was not paying bills. He was very forgetful, confused, always losing things. He was exhibiting the early signs of dementia. I was working with the doctor trying to have him evaluated, trying to get him some help. I was not trying to put him in a nursing home. I just wanted to offer him some help so that he could stay in his house and live comfortably. His family doctor actually said he thought it was dementia and he needed further evaluation. But the neurologist refused to call it that thus tying my hands somewhat. Without a doctor stepping forward and saying so I could not legally pay his bills or anything else! I called Aline for help thinking she might have some suggestions, some resources for us to consider. She was rather sharp with me and said there was nothing we could do. She offered no help, no advice. She said she was very busy and told me that I could make an appointment if I needed to talk to her. This was sometime in early 2012. I actually went to see her in person later that year and she was basically the same with me then. She told me what she charged by the hour and said if I wanted to schedule an appointment she would talk to me then. Otherwise, she could not talk to me. Now, I understood that I just showed up. I understood that she was busy. But I live out of state and didn't exactly have the convenience of scheduling an appointment and coming back. I needed some help then. I thought maybe, under the circumstances, she might see me.

This lawyer is incompetent. Very poor response times and would not accept any information in an electronic format which made preparing materials much more difficult, expensive and time consuming. I had the feeling constantly that she did not know what she was doing and was asking someone else for advice at every turn which made her response times unacceptable. After having her documents reviewed by other lawyers, the clear ineptness became evident. Do not hire this lawyer......

We hired this lawyer to represent our firm in a subcontractor breach of contract dispute on 1/18/2016. We then proceeded to an unsuccessful mediation with the subcontractor. I hired the lawyer since he was considered a mediation expert by his peers but after the unsuccessful mediation, I would disagree. Thereafter he withdrew as my attorney mainly because he wanted me to settle for a large amount of money without providing a viable reason to settle. When I hired him initially, I was very clear that we may proceed with the trial if we had an unsuccessful mediation. By him withdrawing without a good and specific reason made us look unfavorable to the judge. The judge thought something had to be wrong with us as the client when the lawyer withdrew from the case. It also left us very vulnerable where we had to rush to find new representation when we needed dire help to avoid adverse consequences. Also, this lawyer did not take the time to help solve our problem. We had to come up with our own solution which cleared the cloud on the property and we were able to get ALL undisputed subs paid. Ultimately, we did successfully settle with the disputed sub but at a much lower amount with a highly ethical and experienced lawyer. Can a lawyer withdraw from a case? Yes, but this can create ethical issues when I believe this lawyer withdrew for other reasons unknown and unclear. Disagreement of when to settle should not be used as an excuse to withdraw from a case. Unless the client is willfully refusing to pay or there are reasons which are more specific which both parties fundamentally disagree, I believe that the attorney has an obligation, ethical or moral, to finish out the representation.

Refused to file for default judgment when defense missed response deadline. then refused to amend a pleading to avoid 12(b)6 "failure to state a claim." Case dismissed: some claims with prejudice and the rest are now past the statute of limitations. Refused to quickly file a motion for reconsideration and assert right to R15 leave to amend. Refused to use resources or bring another lawyer in to try and fix things. Additionally, he does not have any staff which really hinders anyone's ability to reach him and it really drags things out. Its sad because personally he is enjoyable, probably well intentioned, but he does not engage in adequate follow through. Kind requests for updates receive no response. I worked with him for a long time and I'm disappointed he chose to not perform to the best he is capable of.

Ms. Gooden was a mediator in my divorce. She accomplished nothing. She spent at least 80% of her time with one side of the matter, mine, and did not attempt in any way to achieve mediation. At the end of the session I made an offer to my ex that was much more generous than what our arrangement was. Ms. Gooden did not discuss that offer with my ex. Ms. Gooden had another commitment and I must assume decided to leave before discussing the offer. If that is the case, that would be malpractice. Opposing counsel knew nothing of the offer so you make your own decision

"Ian" seemed to be temperamental prior to my hearing, and throughout the entire hearing displayed mannerisms that confirmed my supposition. "Ian" incessantly displayed behaviors of unnecessary agitation, impatience, and intolerance. He also had a very impudent and unprofessional demeanor during the entire hearing, which leads me to believe I didn't get the fair trial I deserved. "Ian" was also heavily biased towards the plaintiff, and when the defendant admitted to abnormal and offensive behavior, "Ian" did not ask the defendant ANY questions that would have ensued the plaintiff's innocence. It seemed clear to me that "Ian" had already decided before our hearing whom he felt was truly "innocent". The case dealt with a delicate matter of blatant harassment and bigotry from a person exhibiting cognitive decline. This was our first court hearing, and he was not thorough in explaining the process. I am immensely disappointed that this is the best Marion County has to offer when it comes to civil justice. He appeared to be ableist, favoring of a certain demographic, and insensitive to the common issues faced by minorities, especially first time "offenders". "Ian" also seemed to be inconsiderate of veterans, something that I simply cannot fathom. It felt unjust of "Ian" to scold a minority for how they retaliate to bigotry. I am appalled that he is elected to handle civil cases, as he lacks compassion, and professional composure. It is imperative that we have magistrates that incessantly display integrity and uphold a professional attitude. Justice cannot properly be served by someone as immensely biased and unprofessional as "Ian". As a usually optimistic individual, I hope to see the day Marion County civil court will redeem itself with magistrates that legitimately want to deliver justice to the public, and discharge "Ian" Stewart.

However, he received my settlement check six weeks ago and has made numerous excuses to delay payment: I will pay tomorrow, I will get to this in a few days, I calculated my contingency fee wrong, I forgot to credit the payments you made. I was even billed for him to read the email with my wire instructions, but then he supposedly mailed a check for a portion of the settlement which was then apparently lost in the mail. I have left him apx 25 voicemails in the last 50 days and he has not returned one. I have sent apx 25 emails and he has responded to apx 5, every time with a new excuse.

I retained this attorney after reading her bio to handle my post divorce. Once retained, she misinformed me on several issues and billed me for months, over $5000 total for some emails and phone calls to opposing council, and filing several continuance to avoid court appearance. She withdrew her services one week before scheduled court date and left my case without resolution. I originally retained her after meeting with her in person, she told me she would represent me because I moved out of State. After I moved she informed me she could not do this with several excuses as to why, none of which made sense. She and her assistant are nothing but rude, unorganized and greedy. She charges $275 an hour to run her mouth with excuses and send emails. I am out $5000, down the toilet for nothing and now have to clean up the mess she and her staff made with my child support modifications. She even billed me for her time to file papers to quit my case without the courtesy of a simple phone call. She claims she is all about resolving family matters, what she did to me was simple callous.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
