Shea represented me in a custody case in 2022. She is by far the most incompetent and overpriced attorney I have ever had. I am still paying for her mistakes to this day. She put together a horribly worded Parenting Plan (that to this day I am still working on getting all her mistakes fixed), she wouldn’t advocate for me in the courtroom. I was told by her if I wanted something that I could ask the judge myself for it. She incorrectly filled out my financial affidavit and lost me thousands in child support. She charged me for voicemails she left me, knowing that I worked night shift in the hospital, and even after I had told her to only call me at certain times. There were hundreds of dollars in charges for voicemails she left during times she knew I was unavailable. I wish I could go back in time and never have hired her to represent me, the reality is I would have been better off representing myself. Please do yourself a favor, and do not hire her for something as important as your child’s future.

Mr. Davey was rude, short and hung up on me within a matter of minutes. He called me around 6 PM ET as I was in the middle of prepping dinner and caught off guard. He didn't have the time to answer a few simple questions, nor did he he take the time to actually find out any information about the multiple issues I was hoping for consultation on.

This attorney will take your money and run. I did not hear from her for 2.5 months, then she called in the middle of my work day, 2 hours before court, to pressure me into taking a plea. She didn’t extend information to me that would have influenced my decision until right before I had to choose between going to trial or taking a plea. At that time she also informed me that I would have to secure other representation because quote “I know your financial situation”. This attorney did not fight for me, I would not recommend her. She is out for your money and once she has it, her work is done.

He doesn't keep you informed. I couldn't afford to get rid of him for two years and my case lagged on and on. In those two years, he filed one motion... ONE! At the hearing, he objected to nothing, shook like a leaf, and stuttered like a scene out of My Cousin Vinny! This guy is not just lazy, he is incompetent.

I was contacted by this attorney and told he represented the owners of Hurricanes Wings and Grill in Julington Creek. He used both their first and last names. He was contacting me about a negative review I left on Yelp about the restaurant and wanted my contact information. I declined saying I had a right to post my review. He said I did not. When I told him to “bite me” after he refused to give me his name, he informed me he knew what I did for a living and where I worked. I found his call threatening and inappropriate. The National Organization for Hurricanes Wings and Grill did as well. Shame on you for not being up front as an attorney!

Looks like there are a lot of fake reviews here. Read on to see how he is degrading to women and pro se litigants. Folks, please do a little research on spotting fake reviews. Beckus, you SHOULD know this, being an attorney, but buying fake google reviews is illegal. Mr. Beckus represents my ex. I am pro se. Ultimately in the end, Mr. Beckus has accomplished nothing for my ex other than giving him a lot of debt and making it harder for him to pay his child support. So we are both worse off because of him. Also, I am reporting him to the FL Bar Association for his degrading remarks sent to me via email today. These remarks were made after I (a pro se litigant with no experience) corrected him, for the umpteenth time about details in our court order. He has NO BUSINESS degrading a self represented woman like this. And no I have not been nice to him either, but I am not an attorney and my rudeness was in response to him making mistakes and causing BS while his rudeness was in response to me correcting him on that bs. He is an infantile, toddlerish little man. Go take a look at how he responded to his other negative reviews. I have spoken to women he has represented in the past who are in financial ruin because of him and gained nothing from his services. He admitted to me that he currently has over 100 open cases. Just him and his one assistant. Do not hire this clown. He will pour your money down the toilet and give you nothing for it. And then he might call you ugly. Cannot WAIT for your response, Georgie Porgie. Unfortunately this site does not have an option for me to upload screenshots, but if anyone would like to see them, please feel free to email me at

I was very unimpressed with John Reis. He never returned my calls and often it took weeks to get in touch with him. His knowledge of what I worked with him on was nonexistent and at one point he even told me he’d “googled” something to find out. He was very unpleasant to work with and gave me some very bad advice. I worked on a project with him for an entire year and at the end, I walked away with no resolution. My suggestion if you are reading this review is to look elsewhere for an attorney. This one is not worth the time or energy.

Inexperienced, unpracticed and unknowledgeable are a few words I would use to describe Mr. Reis as an attorney. His attention to detail is nonexistent. I had the unfortunate chance to employ his services. He did not return calls nor emails. I would strongly discourage anyone from ever retaining his services.

Willie Walker is very unprofessional. I don’t know if he’s trying to take my settlement or if he can do that but it has been over a year and I have yet to receive correspondence, return calls or emails. When I do finally talk to him he claims that he had just gotten off of the phone with the adjuster and they’re offering an astronomical LOW amount of money to settle. To me that’s a red flag. A good attorney keeps you informed as to what is going on with your case step by step. He has done nothing. I’m wondering if he’s in cahoots with my medical adjuster because he won’t return my call either. I’ve dealt with several attorneys and I’ve NEVER experienced one like this. My entire experience with this guy is horrible. It’s like pulling teeth to come to get him to come up with somewhat of a pleasable settlement. I wouldn’t refer him to my worst enemy.

I dealt with this firm in regard to a bill with a third party. Staff from this office telephoned me multiple times with threats and intimidation regarding a collection. Although I spent numerous hours of my time researching the matter and ultimately discovered that at least part of their information was in error they were rude and unprofessional. The matter has now been resolved and I have written Ms. Landau three times requesting a confirmation of the closure of this matter but have received no communication from her. The actions of Ms. Landau and her staff (Mr. Robinson and Ms. Williams) have been rude, disrespectful and unprofessional.

This woman took my case when the public defender quit. She was rude and unprofessional. I could actually deal with that but she was also stupid and did not know or understand the law. She seemed incapable of answering the simplest question or explaining my situation in any kind of terms that anyone could understand. I saw glances and eye-rolling from other lawyers in the court room (and at least once from the judge). I since talked to a few real lawyers who were all really confused and couldn't explain the logic in her actions. One of them told me that she has a reputation of doing her cases as quickly (and sloppy) as possible so that she could just get rid of it and not have to work very hard. If she gets appointed to your case, you NEED to do ANYTHING you can to hire a paid lawyer. Beg, borrow, or steal, but don't put your future in her hands!!

Court appointed lawyer to my DCF case. He had me sign a consent to dependency, which was basically admitting to be a child abuser, neglect, and/or abandonment, or the potential for being one. I had not idea I was signing that, he presented that to me a few minutes before pre-trial and told me he negotiated with DCF to get my kids back, and that it would make the case close out and I would be with my kids again, and long as I signed I would be the best father I could possibly be, and when I tried to read the rest, he pulled the paper from me after I signed it, and would not let me catch the most important part. He did mention answer yes to all the judges questions, which was the final nail in the coffin of me admitting to being something I never was.

Mr. McQuaig was hired by my husband's family to oversee my late mother-in-law's estate, as she had been a client of his before her passing. This was a simple estate and it took him almost three years to complete. In addition, he charged the family 5 times what he told us his initial fee would be. Attempting to communicate with him was a nightmare...he rarely returned phone calls or e-mails in a timely manner. Things were delayed FAR more than they should have been, and the entire ordeal was very frustrating and caused our family an incredible amount of emotional distress. Sadly, it is attorney's like Mr. McQuaig that give the entire profession a bad name. If you value your time, your money, and your sanity, do NOT hire this man.

This so called lawyer was disinterested in my case from the start. She requested that the best way to contact her was through emails, yet she would take several days to respond to correspondence, she was slow to file simple paperwork, and she was not straightforward about the work that she was doing on my case. In addition, when I asked her a simple question about a filing error she became upset, loud, and hung up the phone without answering the question. Professionalism was not a part of her repertoire as this was not the only incident that she responded to with a bad attitude. I would think twice before hiring this lady.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
