I would highly recommend Maritere Cullen! She was very thorough and detail oriented when collecting documentation for our case. Her attention to detail helped with a smooth immigration application process. Her knowledge of the process was extremely helpful with easing our nerves as we prepared for the interview. Maritere is honest, reliable and very easy to communicate with. We are forever grateful for her help in our case!

I retained Mrs. Cullen for a Child Support Case in Florida while I reside in Jamaica. She made the process very easy for me and explained everything that was happening while as we went along. I felt very confident with her and that it would work out in my favor which it did. I can not think of anything that she could have done any better. I was 100% pleased with her service.

Doug met with us, reviewed our outdated Last Wills and Testaments and Living Wills. Advised us on appropriate updates and prepared all new necessary documents after researching what our needs are based on our current status financially, family wise, and our age. He was easy to talk with. He listened to our concerns and went forward based on our input while at the same time advising us on current laws. We felt confident in his advice and secure knowing that we are properly prepared for our future and for our children's future.

My appreciation to Doug Coenson for his legal representation concerning my real estate issues with the Florida Real Estate Board. His knowledge of the Real Estate industry and his diligence concerning my specific appraisal infraction limited my exposure to penalty and kept my business moving forward with little loss of revenue. Thanks Doug.

Mr. Johns has been the one and single good experience I have had in my many dealing with attorneys. I've had several encounters in the past, requiring legal advise and have travelled the treacherous road of litigation in the past, so I know how these things can end up. However, in all my dealings with Mr. Johns, I find him to be outstanding in his strategic logic and highly competent as an attorney that I needed in an immediate circumstance. Mr. Johns went right to work for me and discovered many things that worked to my benefit almost immediately. He is prompt in his responses to all communications, and I don't feel as though my bank account is being drained, as I had experienced in prior legal battles. This attorney (in my opinion) will definitely go places in life, not only professionally, but personally as well, because he really is doing the work of good "lawyering", The legal profession needs more attorney's like Mr. Johns,

Slimy ambulance chancing lawyers who post untruths online to try and get business. They should be sued for the lies they post online about people especially when those people are found to be innocent by the court of law. They don't care because all they want is money at the expense of someone else's lively hood. The only way they get business is by nefarious business practices. I wouldn't let them represent a rat in New York City!

Update to my 5 star review: The office jerked me around with paying out my settlement funds for a month! I was told on 6/4 they had my settlement but justing waiting for a tiny partial but that I would get the full amount in 1-2 days, and that they would cover the cost to overnight the check to me. I hadn’t received a check nor did I hear back from them. I contacted the office on 6/25 where she told me they did not receive the last bit but said she would send out the check. I contact them again after not receiving anything days later. Not hearing back, I called the office on 7/1 stating that we still did not receive our check. She was surprised….I honestly don’t know why she would be, because we did receive the check that afternoon and it was not postmarked or mailed until four days later on 6/29. And they did not send it priority mail either. Oh they did send me an empty envelope postmarked the day prior. Bravo for holding onto my money necessitating several phone calls and emails in order to finally get my settlement. It’s a terrible last impression to leave someone. You feel total despair when you’ve invested your life savings with a financial advisor you trusted and he screws you over with lots of alternative investments which paid him high commissions and left you hanging for years until most accounts dwindle down to nothing. Matt and Greg were both wonderful, patient and understanding even when I became emotionally difficult. One of the judges knew Greg and Matt, told us we had 2 of the best FINRA attorneys working with us! My husband and I couldn’t be happier with their hard work and our settlement. I highly recommend Matt and his entire staff.

She was not my lawyer but I did work with her and like the other review on this page, I can assure you, you are not of importance to her, in her life. She never responded to text messages regarding scheduling and when there was a mishap with scheduling, on her part, her first reaction (instead of paying me for my time) was to reach out and find a replacement. Utterly despicable.

Today we had a phone call conversation with Eleanor Taft and during the whole phone call she was very short and didn't have patience at all to wait for another colleague of mine to be on the phone call. She makes you feel very little and not important when on the call. She is not very helpful at all as a lawyer and needs to learn how to be polite to client , vendors and others. Ellie Taft is not a lawyer that you will want to work with. Her customer service, politeness and patience is very poor. I do not recommend her at all.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
