If one does not have the financial means to procure legal representation at significant cost, it is advisable to advocate for oneself. Regrettably, I expended $15,000 in engaging both legal practitioners, only to find that they generated unwarranted issues subsequent to my retention. To my dismay, one of the practitioners had the temerity to assert that I would forfeit custody of my children. Despite these challenges, I retained custody. If I had not transferred to Sharp Associates, I would not have been represented by this attorney.

"If your child does not come with you for your parenting time, then you pick your child up, throw them over your shoulder, strap them in your car, and shut them in their room at your house." This was the advice Rex Brueggemann gave me when, in 2022, I engaged with him to represent me in the separation from my non-married partner of over 15 years. Rex consistently gave me advice that was counter to my interests as a father/parent and as a business owner. His tactic seems to rely on heavily pressuring his clients to "settle", much to the favor of the opposing party, while not acting on my requests that would balance the end results of the ruling order. In the end, I had to terminate my engagement with Rex and hire another attorney to represent me. Hiring Rex was a waste of time and money, and it cost me significant leverage with gaining equal parenting time for my children. In the end, he wouldn't even refund the balance of my retainer, adding to the ridiculousness of this experience. I only hope this review helps others save time and money and hardship.

Hired Rex to assist in the facilitation of my divorce. Helped me save my company, fairly allocate the estate, and negotiate through marital assets. Rex was communicative, understanding, thorough, and successful. He later helped successfully terminate un unnecessary PPO filed by previous spouse and followed through on his strategy to prove innocence. Rex had a difficult job ahead of him and I believe he did as much as he was able to. Rex understands the system, the local agents at play, and will advise you with real time data and knowledge. I didn't always agree with Rex, but trusted him fully and chose to let him lead. We ended up with the most desirable outcome of a terribly undesirable situation.

I am out of state and have had him as my attorney back in Michigan for Calhoun County. He is an awesome lawyer and went above and beyond to help settle my custody and child support case. Good prices and I would highly recrecommend Mr. Morris. I had many questions and concerns about this case because it needed to be heard in michigan and I now live in Texas. Mr Morris even went to the courthouse to call me and make sure my phone would accept the call from the court house.

I had the same problem as others mentioned in their reviews. Minor things were negotiated fine but the major issues, he refused to address or fight for me. I asked numerous times about specific issues and he was focused on settling without having to go to court. I said I was willing to and wanted to fight for them and he refused. He told me at my consultation that he would do what is best for me and would fight if needed. That was not the case and I felt like he didn’t want to be bothered by anything there was a disagreement over. I feel like he was more of a benefit to my ex-husband than he was to me and my kids. I hired him because of positive reviews as others have stated. Just a warning to consider all reviews before hiring him.

Victor takes on too many clients to properly address your case. He is extremely unresponsive and terrible with keeping appointments and negligent about keeping you up to date with proceedings. Victor overcharges and double charges your time - he will spend long periods of time on the phone with other clients during your appointment and then bill you for it. He also charges a $50 postage charge for forwarded letters sent by the court and has several other bogus charges. Victor Bland is an unethical attorney primarily interested in taking your money.

I came to Eric Kihm (on a recommendation) after another disability attorney had failed me miserably. Mr. Kihm and his assistant, Kay, helped me navigate the disability process, told me what I could anticipate at each step, and had compassion along the way - all of which I appreciated tremendously! As everyone knows, disability cases take forever, but I am pleased to say that Eric Kihm helped me be successful in my case. I absolutely, highly recommend him! His assistant, Kay, is always on top of things, makes sure that all paperwork is in order, and always responded immediately to questions. They are a fabulous team and I am forever grateful for their expertise, care, and support. I'd give more stars if that were an option.

I would never recommend this individual as an attorney. His ethics are suspect at best and the office is incredibly dingy and dirty. He has no professional decorum. The attorney kept promising my son information on an experienced psychologist whose statement would have made a SUBSTANTIAL difference in his sentencing. He received 27 years for what - at most - should have been 15. Later that same year another one of Mr. Turpel's defendants had his guilty verdict overturned because of ineffective counsel and never delivered promised expert testimony.

Terrible lawyer. I was appointed him by the courts. He cared nothing about me or my case. Did NOTHING to try and get my charges reduced or anything that I asked him. Completely blind sighted me in court getting me 30 days in jail, 18 months probation, & thousands of dollars in court fees for my FIRST offense. I ended up having to spend another $5000 to hire a REAL lawyer to undo his damage. I would not reccomend him to my worst enemy.

This attorney was hired by my father to handle his estate to be divided by 5 children. I am one of the five. A sibling was executor and seemed to be the only person Mr. Bear represented, and was very slow to make contact when needed. Most phone calls went un-returned. Mr. Bear took over two years to finalize the estate and ignored request by any one other than executor. He also pushed through a signed agreement which had been altered to make corrections to its content before signing, making it NOT a mutual agreement among all parties and ignored any attempts made to amend or void that agreement based on that fact. Served only the executor and made things easy for himself. My Dad would be furious, the end result was one beneficiary receiving 60% and the rest divided equally among the other 4. It was suppose to be as equal as possible among all five.

I hired Mr. Swenarton based on a referral from a title company. I was attempting to gain a "quite title" for a property purchased at auction. I was quoted $1500 plus court fees. There was a limited time due to a credit pull, so after on month I called to see what was going on. I was told that the other couple's attorney hadn't responded. I had remembered receiving an email copy of paperwork sent to the other attorney. I called that attorney after doing a Google Search and he answered on one ring. We spoke, he said he had never received a call or letter and that the other family would gladly sign over the house. The follow day I called and spoke to the assistant and told the story, miraculously three hours later she called and told me she had found the quit claim! In addition I had sent five or six emails about a landlord tenant issue. I was told he would file and go to court for me $450. To my surprise when I received a bill for $300 for just reading and sending a one sentence response to my emails. No if this were not enough, I actually trusted to try on last time with an eviction after all of this. We had settled the last agreement at $1800 (about 4x normal cost) and I agreed to retain him for an eviction. I mailed the eviction from Kalamazoo and his staff said it never arrived. I asked if they were going to call the tenants or attempt to resolve, but they stated that would cost the hourly rate of $300. Needless to say if you want to retain a lawyer who is will to work for you and try to save you money, Jeff Swenarton is not the person I would suggest,

Mr Taylor had been doing my father's estate work, so I kept him on when my father passed away to deal with the probate issues. Just before the probate hearing, I received my first bill for $17,000. I was shocked at this, but could not change lawyers at that point. Several of the line items were for 3 hours of work at a time. I'm not sure what would require that amount of time on a simple case, but I paid it and after the probate hearing, told him that we would no longer require his services. Several weeks later I received another itemized bill for $1500. I paid that also and by then had hired a new attorney, who was much less expensive. I had also received three emails, two from Robert Taylor's paralegal and one from the admin, regarding my new attorney. Several months later I received another bill for $300. This one was not itemized, but charged me for 0.8 hours at the attorney's rate even though my communications were with his paralegal and admin. I have no clue what they are trying to charge me for, but it costs between $50 and $100 per email or phone call to deal with these people. I have not contacted them since, since they would just send me another bill. I filed a complaint with the Michigan State Attorney General, but they will non deal with issues against attorneys, so I'm on my own. They continue to send me bills for whatever and I refuse to continue to pay them.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
