This is such a great service. When you find yourself in a situation where an attorney is needed, it is very overwhelming. I called around Knoxville for two days trying to find the right attorney that could help me. I contacted the Knoxville Bar Association and within a few hours I received an attorney referral. It was that easy! When I contacted my referred attorney, I panicked when I found out it would be a couple of weeks before we could meet due to scheduling conflicts. I contacted Tracy Chain at the Knoxville Bar Association. She is amazing! She understood my panic and assured me the referred attorney was the best attorney for my situation. She was very helpful and offered a few other suggestions to help. After speaking with my referred attorney, I couldn’t be more pleased with the referral. He truly was the best attorney to fit my situation. He was patient, kind and very knowledgeable of the law regarding my issue. I felt like he really understood me and my unique situation. Most notably, I found him to be extremely honest. He explained everything in great detail so I had a better understanding of my options. I couldn’t have found a more perfect fit.

Last February I hired divorce attorney Colleen Steele. The all-inclusive charge was $1,000 which I paid her in one payment. Divorce papers were signed by both parties at the end of February. At the end of April I called Ms. Steele to see when the court date would be. At that time she said she had not filed the papers. I had her mail them to me and I went and filed them myself. When I filed, I had to pay $195 filing fee which should have been included in the $1,000 that I paid to the attorney. I called her and she stated she would mail me a refund check. Today I still have not received the check. Since that call in April she does not answer my calls or return my messages. I called the courthouse and they stated since I had an attorney the attorney had to be the one to request the court date. What I need from Ms. Steele is for her to get me a court date and to refund my $195. That's not an unfair expectation.

I hired this lawyer for my divorce. After the court hearing and the divorce was granted she never sent the papers for the judge to sign. It took me to report her to the Board of Professional Responsibility to get her to do her job. The Board found her at fault and I understand she received a penalty. Also, she smell like alcohol on the day of the divorce trial. My pastor was my witness and I was embarrassed.

This lawyer was hired by a debt relief agency on my behalf. He called me shortly after the assignment. He was supposed to negotiate a couple of debts for me but after the initial call, I never heard from him again. I was sued twice and he never showed up in court either time. When I called the debt agency they said he was to give me updates but when I called him the call went to voicemail. Twice I was able to leave a message but he never returned my call, all the other times I called the voicemail box was too full to leave a message. I never met him in person and only had one conversation with him. The least he could do was respond to my call and tell me he wasn't taking my case. Instead, I was in court waiting for a lawyer to show up. I have since found out that the debt agency is a scam. If he knew this he should have warned me.

Hired her for child support, she came at us with big plans to regain tens of thousands of dollars, would make it where the income taxes would be taken..... long story short. Ms Petersen was hard to reach, her secretary talked to us about all the family issues she had, we went to court twice by ourselves, “oh you really don’t need to be there” she said after we call her, then the day we settled she shows up and my ex’s attorney rips her and shows her the law. She didn’t do anything I asked other than get the child support settled, it cost me over 2,000 for this process and the ABA says it’s ok.

I had a consultation and she was 15 minutes late, answered two personal phone calls, not work related. She placed her breakfast order with the lady she pays to answer the phone, the lady interrupted our consult four times with questions regarding her breakfast and spoke about the weather. Very unprofessional. I was billed for a two hour consult in which no plan was established, she kept using her laptop to lookup other cases that showed similarities. She said should would have all of my questions answered in a few days. It has been well over a year and she never did respond to my numerous requests for answers. Needless to say, I chose someone more competent and attentive!

If I could give a lower rating than this I definitely would. He drug out the divorce as long as possible, Would bill me every month additional $100-$300 or more for “mailing” me with ridiculous trumped up fee charges such as, he would bill me for “reading”an email from defendants attorney who made a minor statement concerning a date or comment and also for cost of secretary “ mailing “me a notification stating that he read it, a separate fee for postage, and “ labor” for actually mailing it! He also called me one Saturday morning asking me to come to his office to “discuss the case” which I thought was odd and said so but he insisted that, “he had other pressing cases coming up and may not have another time before the next 3 weeks before going to court”… so I drove a good distance to get to his office, within a minute of being seated he excused himself and spent a good 30-35 minutes rummaging in a file closet across the hall, kept excusing himself to do more of the same, would comeback… ask me something that we had already discussed then get on his laptop… he didn’t want me there to discuss MY case… he was preparing for ANOTHER upcoming case and wanted to BILL ME for his time at the office on a Saturday!

Needs to retire. His letters to the court are always with spelling mistakes, he overcharged me (bills to read a one sentence email). When you call him he is in a bar or tavern as you can hear the backnoise. A few emails to him he charged over 1000. He is a joke and has people believing he is this really good lawyer. He is good at taking your money, thats all. My ex was trying to work with Mr. Valone through his lawyer to wrap up our divorce and Mr. Valone would write all these awful lies in letters to my ex. When I asked him why he was doing this he said he has been doing it all his life. He even had me feeling sorry for my ex. I think he has had a bad life or bad drinking problem. His letters are all filled with lies and he does not care. He sounds drunk all the time. His face is always red. Stay away.

We hired Mr. Herrera after a pleasant phone call to help my elderly mother with a landlord (slumlord). After paying his fee for a letter we had to seriously edit because it did not contain troubling elements regarding her landlord's negligence, he was difficult to reach and made excuses contrary to legal remedies we know existed. A month after the first letter, as we waited for the landlord to take action on his dilapidated house, I hired him to write a letter to a business competitor regarding his defamation and slander. I had to write the entire thing, including state and federal laws he was ignoring, as I'd already emailed him the laws and their corresponding precedents. Months later, after landlord had failed to live up to his own written promises, much less repair the house in a livable fashion -- which includes a failing heating and ductwork system -- Mr. Herrera told my mom to wait until winter before we could address the issue. Seriously? Seriously. We'd informed him, with photos, of this problem the PREVIOUS WINTER. To get that "answer," we had to call numerous times over the course of two weeks, finally stating "we'll have to hire a new attorney if we don't hear from you today." He took our money, wrote crappy letters, refused to any follow-up, and never stated fees for more action. Maybe he didn't want to take any action. Maybe he made his easy money and that was all he wanted. We paid for letters I could've written myself just to have his Esq. attached to them. Wasted six months and $800 which would've been better spent on a competent lawyer. Nothing has changed since we sadly chose Mr. Herrera to "represent" us.

Couldn’t get a hold of him. Wouldn’t call back for weeks and a few times over a month. Lied about what was being done. Said he had sent out certified letters to defendants and said he had claims for me to review and he never filed any claims. Quit contacting me completely and was paid for services. Couldn’t imagine a worse attorney.

I hired this attorney after my divorce. She recommended that I try to get full custody of my 3 children because it would increase my child support. She gave me the impression that this was a no-brainer. After weeks of depositions, hiring a Psychologist to perform a custody evaluation and 2 weeks sitting in a court room trial, all at her recommendation (Her web site says most of her cases go to trial) The Judge made no changes. I was left with hundreds of thousands of dollars in attorney fees. If she would have told me this was a remote possibility, I would have never moved forward.

After 5 yrs. of prolonged alienation from my child, I hired K.O. Herston in Jan. 2020 to charge my child's Mother with alienation, contempt & absconding jurisdiction. I paid retainers on time, then Covid-19 shut down my business for 3 months causing a severe, temporary hardship. Mr. Herston wouldn't even consider giving me any relief (delayed payment plan), instead billing me full speed ahead, payable on receipt, PLUS 12% interest the entire time. He then withdrew as my attorney, even as I took a loan to pay him in full. This brought me no value, cost me a fortune & left my family in ruin. I do NOT recommend this attorney.

Instead of owning up to his mistake, Mr. Hull has instead blamed me for “getting his cases confused.” Never reached out prior to the hearing but yet claimed to the judge that he was “uncomfortable” representing someone he never spoke to, argued with myself before a judge. Might I add this was all over the phone due to his absence because he confused my case with another, which he himself admitted to happening frequently. Mr. Hull assumed many incorrect things about myself, my case, and my situation and was tactless when corrected. One phone call was enough to prove to myself that this attorney has no interest in who he is representing, only interested in himself and deflecting his mistakes onto his would-be clients. Save yourself the stress of being berated by someone hired to be there for you and just represent yourself, or simply search for a better attorney before ever agreeing to Mr. David Hull representing you.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
