Judith helped me with my divorce back in 2008, and was extremely professional. She was also caring, sympathetic, and honest. If she thought something was outlandish on mine or my ex-husband's end--she'd tell me. She always responded promptly and efficiently. She helped me through my very difficult time. I'm very glad I came across her, and would recommend her to anyone.

I was first referred to Judith by a friend of a friend. My situation was a sticky one including an OFP against my (at the time) husband along with handling our divorce (and custody of our 3 children) concurrently. It was an extremely difficult time in my life and having Judith as my lawyer gave me confidence and a feeling of security throughout the process. She took the time to listen and fully understand the dynamics of the situation throughout the 12 months it took to fully go through the process of handling the OFP, SENE, guardian ad litem, mediation and negotiations of custody and financial arrangements, all divorce proceedings and child support hearing. During all court dates and negotiations, I always knew that Judith was looking out for my (and my children's) best interests and her approach of handling herself was always in the manner I would hope an attorney would act - in control and honestly, having "no time" for shenanigans coming from opposing counsel. Judith was always very up front with me with realistic expectations from the courts and legal system, which was invaluable - particularly as I've never been through any of this before (as most haven't). Learning legal terminology, laws and processes is overwhelming, particularly when mixed with a high emotional time. Judith was on top of it all, keeping me informed with full explanations. Financial-wise, Judith was able to effectively stick to the initial discussed monies needed to cover expenses, I never once felt "nickel and dimed". I will absolutely recommend Judith in the future!

He should go into politics because he loves to write/talk long lengthy communication vs getting the job done. If you hire him be prepared to listen to him more than him listening to you.

Jason began handling my case after the termination of my first lawyer. I wish he had been my first, which would have saved me a lot of time and dollars in the long run. I quickly became very confident in Jason's abilities and comfortable discussing everything with him. Five years after the divorce, I immediately contacted Jason on a follow up matter, which was resolved with less than two of his work hours. While l hope, I will never again be stupid enough to require his services but, I would recommend him to an equally stupid friend. Jason is a hard charging individual, cuts through legal challenges and gets the job done, quickly, efficiently, and cost effectively. Time is money and Jason's time is worth the money :)

Jason is the best divorce/family law attorney. Period. He expertly guided me through the most difficult event in my life. Now that my divorce is complete, I look back in retrospect and can assertively say that my happiness today is directly correlated to Jason having been my attorney during the darkest period of my life. Jason was worth every penny, and then some. I can never repay him for what he has given back to me--my life. I sincerely am forever in his debt.

He’s obviously an experienced lawyer and knowledgeable. The tactic of convincing a new client into the most expensive response, is great for a law firm. But all I wanted to do was respond with a motion to dismiss which has a chance, but if granted, not much money for the law firm. If not granted then the content of it, can be amended into a response. Which means a hearing, $$$$$. It’s better for a client to start with a motion to dismiss. All assuming u have a case. Which nick kept pushing me into a response , so it was clearl to me, I had a case. He became condescending to me, and did the old standard “ trust me”. Very old school patronizing attitude. He pushed me to tears he was so obnoxious. And obliviously did not bother to read the action filed against me for a simple quiet title on an empty lot. So if you are a person who doesn’t have thousands of dollars for a “ retainer” , but feel strongly an action filed against u has no merit based on facts, etc. don’t bother with nick. It my impression is He wants cases that will make him lots of money. And has no time for cases that could be resolved quickly.

I was referred to Nick Passe by another attorney. My husband and I were selling our home and had two purchase offers, one of which we agreed to sign but two hours before closing, we realized that that offer was not in our best interest and we declined. That same night, we signed the offer from the other party. Because we had not listed our home and did not have a realtor working with us, we were very concerned that we may have gotten ourselves into some legal issues. Nick listened carefully, asked many questions, and made a phone call to the realtor, which ended all issues that were still lingering. In that little bit of time, he took away a weeks worth of stress. He was easy to talk too and very thorough about listening to all details before coming to a conclusion in the matter. I would definitely recommend him and will be using him to handle the closing on our home.

Over the last year or so I have come to know Nick pretty well. He is a very intelligent, wise, and respectable person as well as an excellent attorney. He shoots straight and does exactly what you ask of him if not more. He has successfully helped me through a few rough times and went above and beyond when it came to his knowledge, consistency, and motivation. He gets to know you as a client and figures out how to help you best, just like every attorney should, views and carefully plans out everything that should be. Definetely hiring again if I need anything in the future. Thanks nick!

Jennifer represented me in the divorce my wife filed against me. She was excellent in her handling of a very aggressive lawyer on my wife's side. She always responded in a timely matter and truly cared for my case. I switched to her early on in my case and was never sorry for the choice. Thank you Jennifer for all your hard work.

Would not recommend Jennifer Brown at all. Does not respond in a timely fashion, if you can get her to respond at all. Best case you will get to talk to her paralegel. Is not strategic at all in her planning. Doesnt seem to fight for her clients. Court experience was she was not willing to go that extra mile or have any fight in her.

Tom, to my knowledge, is now retired. However, in researching his replacement I found bad reviews for him on this site. The fact is, he was known as one of the best lawyers in the state! He handled my divorce case very well. I was at risk of paying half of my ex's $80,000 in student debt. Tom's preformance during the divorce trial was the reason I was only ordered to pay a couple thousand of it. He was expensive, but you get what you pay for! That said, he didn't charge me for every phone call and email either. This was in 2008. He's also a calm guy with a good overall personality. I could understand not liking him if you were up against him in court though.

I had the unfortunate experience of using this attorney. Didn't listen to me or my wishes. He advances his ideas with no regard to what you, as a client wants accomplished. Don't waste your money. After using other attorneys I have come to understand the difference between those who care about their clients and those who don't. Me Sleik likes to pad his bank acct and after that's accomplished, he doesn't like to be bothered with actually doing his job. Worst money I've spent I think maybe my entire life.

I was very disappointed with her performance. She didn't seem to have even listened to what I had told her before court. She was visibility nervous and her hands were shaking during proceedings, she didn't make sense when she spoke. I actually think she made me look worse and negatively impacted my case more than anything. I don't need to pay someone to act confused, disoriented, and talk in circles; I can do that just fine on my own.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
