Too bad I can't choose 0 stars. My now husband retained Dustan Abshire for his divorce as recommended by his criminal defense attorney, David Lorenzo. Dustan had him sign a protective order not explaining to him that if he signed it this meant he was admitting to having abused his then wife and/or kids per false allegations made by her the night he threatened to take his own life when he found out she was having an affair and everyone knew but him. This resulted in him not seeing his children for almost 3 years! When he no longer chose to use him, Dustan told him he wouldn't be able to get his divorce finalized without paying him more money. Divorce was finalized thru another attorney and no more was paid to Dustan. My husband maintained that he felt like Dustan only represented those he chose to help. He felt like he had marked him guilty from their first meeting and didn't bother to get to know him as a father or who he was. Felony charges were reduced to misdemeanors due to lack of evidence and truths! Lorenzo was no help either!

We had the absolutely worst experience using Sam Winfrey! She completely butchered our case and stole our money. She never did anything we asked of her. Absolutely doesn’t know what she is doing. After we agreed upon a balance and put $2000 down and made monthly payments. Somehow our balance was almost doubled and we were told we missed 5 payments that we have proof we made so she got mad add dropped us as a client because she was in the wrong. We asked her to do certain things for our case for over 7 months and she never even got started on it. She is incompetent and a thief!

My fiancé hired Marcus in May of 2024. They agreed to $10,000 flat fee. My fiancé paid half up front and was supposed to pay $500 monthly. A month later, Marcus was terminated. In the weeks leading up to Marcus’s termination, he repeatedly told us he was going to call someone for a statement. Marcus said multiple times he made an attempt. The person he was supposed to contact said he never had heard from Marcus. Once the person returned from offshore, eventually Marcus spoke to the person. Marcus had only texted him about speaking in person. Never called like he kept telling us he was doing. Marcus also made some records request to which he said the people that respond, have 30 days to reply. Almost 45 days later, all Marcus would say when asked on the status of these requests is, “Yeah I’m gonna check on those requests”. He never gave us an update on these requests. Marcus was scheduled to meet with someone in June 2024. After the meetup and , as Marcus was leaving, I explained how important the case was to our family and how it had adversely affected us. An hour later Marcus texted me. A text I, and others felt was an inappropriate text to send me, his client’s fiancé. He was fired on June 23rd after he sent an inappropriate text to me. This text was sent while my fiancé had been waiting for hours for an update from Marcus. My fiancé even texted Marcus after his inappropriate text asking for an update, never to get one. The text said: “Now all weekend I'm gonna think about you. Wondering how someone so beautiful and so young can lose hope if they saw what I saw” Marcus also would fail to respond to messages, calls, his business site messaging system. He was not communicative and seemed to not follow through with a lot. So after Marcus’s firing, Marcus billed us for $5000. We are out all this money and starting from scratch. That’s $5000 we borrowed. A bar complaint has been filed. If attorney’s can screw over their clients and take their money so quickly, then I’m afraid to ever hire an attorney again. *I consulted Marcus outside of Avvo and want to shed light on his practices.*

Mr. Myers is a highly reliable attorney with a broad mindset on resolving cases. He is very straightforward and realistic on any and all routes a case can go, but also prepares for any of those routes as well. He works endlessly getting cases closed with your best interest as priority. Also, consistently ready to assist with any other legal matters that come about. Mr. Myers isn't only for criminal defense but also covers an array of many other legal obstacles you may encounter, from criminal to car accidents. You don't know unless you ask so I would strongly recommend asking Mr. Marcus Myers for legal advice or even enrolling him as you, or a loved ones, attorney.

I paid her thousands in retainer fees and when my court day came, she was late and never said a word to defend me. I basically paid her to sit there in court. She is very unorganized and cannot keep a paralegal. If you tell her one thing beforehand she will claim you never told her and will embarrass you in court by yelling at you. She is very cold and doesn't care. I would not recommend her to anyone.

This lawyer made many mistakes on a succession. He failed to note the correct information on tax documentation and therefore ended up having to pay more to have it corrected. Ended up paying for his miscommunication because he decided to proceed without clarification, and when we told him no, that is not what we wanted at all, he charged us for what he did already plus the correction. We even had to call to find out what was going on when he wasn't responding to our emails and guess what? He charged us for that too. Now after the succession we are still finding mistakes that if he would have taken the time to review the details he would have already found.

When I called for an initial consult, I was assured that she could handle my inquired concerns. When I arrived, she could not answer those concerns, nor give the counsel needed as requested. She deflected with saying I did not tell her about the subject I wanted covered during the consult; but as it turns out, she does not know the subject matter at all. It seems that her only concern was to get me in for the initial consult fee of $200.00 which was a waste for getting no counsel at all. Then she offered to fill my paperwork out for $250.00 an hour. I declined because if you lack the knowledge on the subject matter, the paperwork would have been incorrect and faulty. Her concerns were only about money, not good professional work. I felt robbed, and I would not recommend her for anything. She knew she did not have expertise when I called, first, before the initial consultation. She just wanted the $200.00 fee, and knew she would not be providing counsel. She claimed she would have recommended someone else, but never did so. She talked about if she would take the case, there would be a $5,000.00 retainer, and as it is used up by them, I could come in and replenish it. For the simplistic need I had, this was not going to happen. This shows that as a client, your legal needs do not matter to her, neither does getting the information correct, just bring the money. Keep your money, and get a better attorney elsewhere, and I know that is hard to do. Sign my name as D. R.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
