Mr. Greg Goehring is the best lawyer in town hands down. After I totaled my car in a head on collision (that was not my fault) the insurance agencies were giving me a hard time! I was worried because of the time I spent without a car and money I was spending to get to work. A co-worker recommended Mr. Greg Goering , and I after meeting with him I know I was in good hands. He was able to negotiate a fair outcome and I was able to get my life back on track without skipping a beat. Thanks Greg!

He represented me in the two rear-ended collisions that happened to me. He is honest and upfront about insurance companies - the insurance company downplays how bad it was getting hit at 65 mph! And they are out to protect themselves, not take care of the person with the injuries. He was diligent with pursuing a reasonable settlement. Thank you for assisting me in my case.

I hired Nick to help recover wages that a former job had failed to pay. This was my first time dealing with a situation like this so I had a lot of anxiety about it but Nick was incredibly helpful and communicative from day one. The matter was resolved much more quickly than I would have anticipated and I would definitely hire him again - thank you, Nick!

He is an awesome attorney that knows his laws in every angle. He is the best and I can't express not enough how great he is and that shows in his practice. I learned so much from him and how things can go right if you listen and things shall go your way. I again agree if you lie as an employer and you can't back it up, then forfeit is the answer. Thank you

Nick was very professional, always on time, organized and prepared for court. Nick's organizational and preparation skills are second to none. Nick seems to be be a man of few words, however the words he used were powerful and spot on. Nick had our case of three months in hand at all times and it gave us a feeling of security knowing this.

I have know Shannod practially all of my life and have kept in touch over the years as good friends do. About a year and a half ago I was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated. ( I write suspicion because they got me while I was eating a cheeseburger at a local restaurant ) The Petaluma police were nice enough to haul me in and tow my car. When the police finally let me use the telephone I called Shannon. He was lightening fast and went way out of the normal scope of Attorney Client service. He put up the cash for my bail and came to the holding station in the middle of the night. Shannon then followed up with DMV to secure my driver liscense and simultainously referred me to a local DUI specialist attorney..... Thanks to Shannon Dean, I have a new found faith in humanity! Shannon continues to be of service to both me and my buisness affiliates in Northern California and although we do not call him in the middle of the night, I assure you he is the First Attorney we call period. I say he's honest because he didn't automatically tell me I had to hire him to answer a question that's public knowledge but still I needed verified. I will be hiring him once I get finances. Thank you Mr. Smith for not brushing my off. You made a world of difference, God will bless you for helping a widow and her fatherless children.

According to the California State Bar, there are only 5 Family Law specialists within the San Joaquin County. Erica is on that short list for good reason. She does her research, is prepared and ready to fight for you. She is backed by a great team and l'm confident they will deliver results for you as they did for me. Her rates are fair and worth every dollar.

My family and I hired Mr. Humphrey for my brother's criminal case. It was a very serious case. We were very well pleased with the way he handled the case. He was really on top of it. His secretary Amanda is such a sweet person. She is the most easiest person to talk to, she is very understanding. I would definitely recommend others to Mr. Humphrey's Law Frim!! Great people!!

I hired this attorney over three years ago. He's a fake. I never heard back from his firm. My case was transferred to another attorney in the firm which I heard back from. Have not heard anything in over three years. These people are scumbag fakes. Going to look into during them for malpractice. They are not ethical nor following legal guidelines.

He is a rip off!!! Over charged (proved in arbitration) and did no prep nor help for case. We did leg work while he milked retainer. Actual scene in court- when turned to him for advise on certain question, he shrugged his shoulders as if he didn't have a clue nor didn't care.

Where do I begin? My experience working with Mr. Hardwick was horrendous. I will start by saying, he does not know how to email or use a computer. He is sexist and told me I am worth nothing more than $10 an hour, after that same meeting he asked me if I was going to slash his tires in the parking lot (keep in mind, he was supposed to be representing my family). He appears to not work and takes forever to do tasks. He doesn't listen to his clients and does not make changes when he is asked to. He goes to other attorneys and asks them to do his job for him, and even admits to them that he is unsure how to perform work he has taken a very large retainer for. He drags his feet to make as much money as he can off his clients. This might be why there are never any lights on in his office and why his parking lot is always empty.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
