He is an absolutely awful attorney. He was totally unprepared for my arbitration hearing and did not represent me in any way. He barely knew the case. The only thing he knew is what I told him. He put no effort into understanding the case. I knew I was in trouble leading up to the hearing when we had our preparation phone call and he offered no strategy whatsoever. When I tried to press him on it he had no answers at all. All he did was introduce me at the beginning of the call and then left the rest up to me. At the end of the hearing when the arbitrator asked if we had a closing rebuttal he asked me if I had any. I couldn't believe he had NOTHING to offer. I had one shot at getting my record amended and I blew it on this clown. Stay far, far away from this guy. All he does is collect a pay day, and an expensive one at that.

I received legal advice from this purported attorney that was plain wrong. He seems to have a strong emotional reaction to people with disabilities, assuming they “go around making demands to which they are not entitled.” What was asked was a simple question: is it possible to request a reasonable accommodation from a builder due to severe asthma? The accommodation would be to have a slab poured rather than a basement or crawl space. It would require a code variance. He began to pontificate on my medical condition about which he knows nothing and then claimed that asthma was not covered under the ADA. Mild asthma is not covered, but my condition is severe, long-standing and life-limiting and most certainly IS covered - and a simple google search could have quickly corrected his ignorance. But Mr. Janssen’s ignorance is intractable. Furthermore, he was very rude and unpleasant even though I was polite and professional in the face of his boorish bad manners and ignorance of the law in an area where he does not specialize. Had this ignoramus a modicum of professionalism, he would have referred me to someone who does know disability law. I was content to get away from him as quickly as possible. Regardless of the area of law you seek, avoid this man. A lack of knowledge and professionalism will not serve you in any forum.

A horrible person. She did nothing but make the case worse. She didn't do what she promised, was untruthful in court, tried to sabotage a parent's attempts to reconnect with their child. She refused to hand in her reports and was eventually fired by the courts after wasting nearly a year of the courts and more importantly the family and especially the child's time. There is a very warm place in the afterlife for people like Maghan.

Megan was appointed as the CLR on my custody case in Weld County. Megan done a terrible job she NEVER meet deadlines. Megan didn’t communicate well worse yet was very dishonest in her reports. She leaves out very important information. Her first report she had to go back and amend with many missing important facts. Megan is very good at twisting things around on both sides to make one look better and the other look worse then they really are. She makes recommendations to you. Then used those recommendations against you. She’s very sneaky in how she investigates she tries to go behind your back. When she can’t get what she wants that way she will ask you to help her with it later. If she would be transparent from the beginning she could get what she wants. (Talks to landlords then makes it your responsibility to get their birthdates like that really matters) Megan definitely picks favorites she believed everything my ex said and nothing I said. Megan will lie to protect other attorneys and their wrong doing. Good old boy system. She will lie so you don’t get reimbursed money owed to you. Megan doesn’t really do what’s in the best interest of the children but what really best for the mother. I thought we were out of the 1970s. Still a woman’s world in family law. Megan will hide the facts of drinking and abuse issues. She simply leaves very important things out of her reports. When you ask about them her response is those things wouldn’t change my recommendations. That’s fine but she didn’t leave anything out about me and added a few extra. One more example of how she make one look good and the other side look bad. By leaving things out about mom and adding everything about the dad along with a few extra items. As for dead line not one time did she meet a deadline. Her reports and recommendations will be filed just hours before court in the middle of the night you and the judge don’t even have time to look at it before court. She doesn’t return calls or emails. She shows up for home visits hours late. She twist the kids wants around to suit her. After all of this and the delays SHE CUASES she going to ask for more money to stay on the case and you will be ordered to pay for her inability to get things done. She will drive a wedge between parents and kids. If she is assigned to your case it would be in your best interest to request a new CLR. Megan won’t get things done on time or complete. She will leave out important facts. Some she will amend if you bring them up. (Why should you have to lol) She’s going to ask for more money. She will make recommendations for you when you do them she will use them against you. She definitely picks a side early on and only believes and follows up on what they say. If you’re not that person everything you say falls on deaf ears and gets left out of her report. These reports are highly looked at in court you can not let her be on your case. She will cost you in many ways. Not only her extra fees your attorney fees will go up also. We all prepared for court and showed up but NO Megan court got canceled and rescheduled. No she didn’t offer to cover my fees for her not showing up. Wish I had something good to say but there isn’t anything.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
