Daryl Bennet & this law firm are a joke. Literally felt like a joke watching my loved one being represented by this office, that’s how bad it was. Daryl failed to show for the final trial and sent Nick. Nick said more outside the courthouse apologizing than he did inside to represent my cousin. Damn deer in headlights! RUN FROM THIS OFFICE! Don’t waste your money. They don’t care about your life.

Elizabeth Fulton is a dishonest and unethical human being. I did a remodel for her and even though she said she was very pleased with the work, refused to pay. I don't know how well she advocates for her clients as an attorney. I simply know she cannot be trusted!

In many years of our family hiring attorneys, I've never experienced a finer, more prestigious and professional individual than Tonda Curry. She goes far beyond what is expected of lawyers. She's very kind and warm hearted and totally in tune with her work and the case. Also found her to be well prepared, knowledgeable & well respected in the courtroom. She's recognized as exceptional and far ahead of most criminal attorneys in our warped judicial system! She makes things happen! I would hire her again in a heartbeat!

There was never an investigation done by this lawyer or her staff. We paid for that. Never tried to plea bargain on the date appointed by the judge in court. Never showed up in court with my child , only sent her assistant who had no experience with a Felony 1 charge. Everyone in Smith County understands the system. We all hope for a attorney who will follow the true meaning of justice and not man to help the true process of justice to prevail. Do your homework with this lawyer, Check the court records & news articles for yourself and you will be able to make a better more informed decision. She's prosecutor then a defense attorney, then a prosecutor again, and now a defense attorney. I wished I had known to do that before hiring this lawyer. I would have made a different choice.

Paula handled my divorce and did a flawless job representing me and my son. If you follow her advice and stick to her plan, which takes maturity and discipline, she will get you the best result possible. I was very impatient as anyone would be in circumstances with children. Things took a while but in the end she did more than I expected of her. My son lives with me and I am owed support. Not many men end up with that result. I would totally recommend her to anyone needing help. Thanks Paula!!

She was terrible! She never kept in contact with me at all, lied about me agreeing to terms with my Ex-Wife signed papers saying she had my consent at which time she did not. Didn't tell me when we were to appear in court.

I have a relatively simple traffic court case coming up later this month. Deferred disposition and defensive driving aren't options for me, so, on the advice of a Dallas-area attorney, I sought local counsel. Now, keep in mind, these types of non-DUI/DWI cases typically take no more than 30 minutes of attorney's time; traffic court lawyers typically charge around $200 to handle such cases. After describing my case to a rather...Type B secretary...who sounded quite sleepy, or bored, I received a call back from the secretary. She told me that Mr. Bass said he would be happy to take my case...for one thousand dollars. I called the next attorney on my list who's practiced locally for 30+ years. He indicated that I could probably handle the case myself; reassured me that I had nothing to worry about; said that if I was nervous, he'd be happy to meet me at court or make a phone call; just call him closer to to the court date and remind him. Night and day, people. Night. And. Day.

WOW, How in the world can he stay in practice, He is Not in any way trying to help clients, Will not ANSWER ANY CALLS, EMAILS, NO WAY TO EVEN LEAVE MESSAGE, AND ITS BEEN LIKE THIS FOR YEARS. How sad that our friends & family's have no choice but to except an attorney who does NOT care, doesn't want to be bothered by people who deserve to be defended. How can an Attorney CHOOSE TO NOT ANSWER, CALLS ,EMAILS. Oh that's right He's a PUBLIC Defender he still gets Paid by the state.

DO NOT USE THIS FIRM!!!!! She reduced my retainer of 7,500.00 to 0.00 and then requested withdrawl as representive because she had a personal vendetta, and manipulation of existing resources (Network and Legal System)to get the judge to agree even after I denied her request (She got paid to know my case then failed to communicate as well as failed to follow my written instructions). Mrs Charles is unprofessional and will take all your retainer and then drop you as a client after retainer gone if you dont follow her "recommendations", even though you are the one whom hired her! DO NOT USE THIS FIRM!!!!

Ms. Charles and her staff are highly professional, and help you realize that you must step past your emotional reaction to the situation and strategize. Her court appearances are prompt and effective, and billing is itemized and clear. She also makes referrals to other lawyers as the situation arises, and her staff is attentive and responsive even over the telephone or via email. It is important to realize that Ms. Charles is a professional and act accordingly so you can make the best use of your time. She will carefully explain anything in a ruling, but I personally find when I approach meetings in the same manner I would a doctor's appointment I have a much better understanding of what she is explaining. A lawyer is not there for emotional support, but for legal advice, and that's something many people being faced with divorce may have a difficult time remembering.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
