Jill was not only impossible to get ahold of but was incredibly rude over email and calls when you could. She was unwilling to work with or listen to others and made this entire process so much more painful than it needed to be. She should not work in any field that involves helping or even speaking to others. I’m still shocked at how rude and obnoxious she behaved.

My husband and I have used Jill Thompson for the last three homes we purchased/sold. We could not have asked for anyone better. Jill was professional, easy to work with, helpful, thorough and prompt. And her staff was equally as good as she was. I would absolutely recommend Jill Thompson for your closings.

I had Mrs. Geeslin as a public defender. I wish I never trusted her. Because of her I signed off on documents I had no business and it cost me my children. If you're a person of color, PLEASE do not choose her. She refused to defend my family because we didn't look like what we claimed! Now my children are being abused and sexually assaulted in foster care thanks to her.

I came to this lawyer two years ago for a divorce and she charged me $650 out of 1200 dollars. I paid her a little at a time. I paid my half and I haven't heard much from her. I have been calling her too and I can't get her to return my calls. She also went from one law practice to her own practice. She never let me know she was moving. My divorce still isn't final and I need answers regarding this matter.

Mr. Burnette failed to have my ex-wife served on time. Three weeks went by before she was served with my motion to modify custody. In court, he forgot many of the pieces of evidence I gave him, so when they were introduced by my ex-wife's lawyer, Mr. Burnette was not able to properly respond.

Poor communicator. Won’t give you your paperwork back if you fire him even though you are entitled to it, he didn’t even know I had all the papers that I did have, said he would look for it and now he is not communicative back once again. Child custody matter has been going on for close to 3 years, he doesn’t wanna fight in court, he wants to play a defense mode and won’t fight for you no matter how good your case is. VERY POOR COMMUNICATION.

I hired Kevin Bradley in late 2009 to handle a child support matter. We had a jury trial and the jury came down on my side. Judge Lamar Sizemore asked Kevin Bradley to expedite the writing of the final Order so that he could sign it before he retired. A full 3.5 years went by and the Order was not written. After sending him a certified letter threatening legal action, he wrote it. I then discovered I had paid more than $3800 dollars in excess support. You may save money in the beginning because his retainer is low, but you will pay more in the long run because he only cares about your retainer. DO NOT HIRE KEVIN BRADLEY!

I was informed by office personnel that office consult fee would be $200.00 & lawyers fee would be 7500. 00 for my case. I informed personnel that I did not have full amt. She reassured me it was okay to pay 100.00 at visit and would make arrangements for the rest of 200.00 consult fee. This discussed in Feb. So, went office visit this month April and when, I finished consult, I was told that it would be 500.00. 250.00 per hour. I was shocked but I paid what I ccould hich was only 200.00. So, I decided to call the office personnel to find out what had happened and why the fees had changed. I told her I thought you quoted the above fee to me when appt was made. She never told me that the consult fee would be hourly. She abruptly told me that she had been working with this lawyer for 21 years and she has never told anyone that. Never apologized, so I told her it seems like we are getting off on the wrong foot, so I won't be needing the services. She abruptly told okay and good luck. Just rude. No professionalism at all.

I'm writing this review to let all others beware of this lady. My wife and I hired Lise Kaplan as our attorney over four years ago. Within the past few years we have given her over $30,000. She prolongs cases for NO reason at all and keeps you sitting in her office for an unreasonable amount of time. She dropped us as her client without given any explanation why after getting all that money out of us.

Lied, misled, withheld information, spoke to me as if I were a bad taste in his mouth, I hired him because he had a reputation of being very "forceful" which to me, was what I thought I wanted dealing with insurance companies, but he also acted that way toward me, He will not follow directions, he does what he wants, and then gets frustrated when you ask him to do what you ask... I finally listened to enough, then as usual he will ask you if you just want your file, so I said, yes! Then he placed a lien on any future settlement, and when I asked why, he said because he wrote a letter, so I replied "Well are you gonna finish this case?" He replied "no." Apparently, he only has time to rob the injured, If you need a lawyer, pick anyone else! He'll speak badly of any lawyer you may mention, I can't say enough, to warn you how bad he will leave your situation if you place your security in his hands! You will have to do all your own research, and he will never return your calls.

Ms. Benedict was the most unprofessional lawyer that I have ever had any dealings with. I had to initiate contact. She constantly ignored contact. She has very poor relationships with most judges that she has come in contact with. She cancelled hearing after hearing causing my case to drag on years longer than it should have only to quit and place such a high lien against my claim it was hard to find another attorney. I would not recommend her to represent a gnat.

Unsure how she got endorsements unless these are just good friends of hers. If she already has a private practice and considers herself doing charity work through the public defenders office, she is doing a poor job. She does not return calls. When she does speak with the client, she doesn't even know their charges. An attorney that doesn't respond for months is not a good attorney. An attorney who doesn't let their clients know what's going on with their case is not a good attorney. Convince me otherwise. I encourage you to do so.

This attorney never returns calls or emails. We have been to court 3 times for a Temp Order only to have none of them signed. He actually admitted that he took bad notes and forgot what was agreed upon. Really? He may know law but her certainly doesn't know business. And then he has the nerve to ask for another $1,000 because the case has taken longer than expected(due to him not following up with things), and then canceled another court day the day before we were to appear without even giving me a call to inform me. I paid for a representation in a divorce and advice, none of which i recieved. I highly recommend you look elsewhere before using this attorney.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
