I hired Joe to represent me in finalizing a pro se divorce case. From the initial consultation, to the filing of the final paperwork, I found it easy to arrange meetings, and always had quick answers to my questions. He took care of paperwork that I never would have known about, and kept the communication going so that I was fully aware of important dates in the timeline. If I needed representation again, I would definitely give him a call.

We chose Zihmer Law Firm to help us update our will and estate plan after our previous attorney retired. We were very happy with our experience and highly recommend them! The entire process - from scheduling, discussing our options, to the final signing - was professional, smooth and reassuring. I can relax knowing it'll be easy to keep our plan updated and it's such a relief to know we can rely on their expertise in taking care of this important task.

I chose Zihmer law firm because I knew Tracey, her work and her ethics when we worked together before she became an attorney. It was a brilliant decision. I now have expertly prepared documents, excellent guidance in making arrangements I never even thought of and total peace of mind. And the care and support doesn’t end with signing the documents. She and her team are a terrific resource for navigating this last phase of life. It is one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

When your parents pass, we as children are left to handle everything. My father prepared me before he died for pretty much everything and that included Christine at Zacharia Brown. We struck gold when we found Christine Brown. Our first meeting was through Zoom and by the time we were done we knew she was the one. There was no need for us to interview another lawyer. Throughout the process of setting up our will and our trust, Christine has been so helpful, kind, patient with us. She is knowledgeable and explains things to us in a way we can understand, considering we have no legal background. We appreciate her availability and her flexibility. If you are on the fence please pull the trigger and hire Christine. I promise you will not regret it.

My father, since April 2022, has had a series of falls, resulting in breaking his shoulder and both hips and a stroke, which resulted in him living with a peg tube and being immobile. Dad also has dementia. Taking care of him full-time was nearly impossible. He needed long-term, round-the-clock care. I was referred to Zacharia Brown Elder Law Offices, and I cannot sing their praises enough. From start to finish, Carl's expertise, compassion, and dedication left a lasting impression on me. Carl went above and beyond to ensure my concerns and needs were met. From the initial consultation, he exuded professionalism and made me feel comfortable discussing Dad’s situation. He took the time to thoroughly explain the process with multiple options, ensuring that I understood the process of getting long-term care. One aspect that truly impressed me was Carl's deep knowledge of elder law. He possessed a breadth of understanding in many areas of elder law, though our needs were limited to long-term care planning, Medicaid, and veterans benefits. This breadth of knowledge allowed him to provide comprehensive and integrated solutions tailored to our unique situation. Carl’s team was also exceptionally knowledgeable and incredibly patient, attentive, and compassionate. They recognized the unique challenges faced by Dad's case and showed genuine empathy throughout the process. Their kindness and understanding helped alleviate stress during what could have otherwise been a daunting ordeal. What truly set this law firm apart was its unwavering commitment. Carl consistently maintained open lines of communication, promptly addressing my questions and concerns way into the night. He provided regular updates on the progress of our application, ensuring I was always well-informed. Furthermore, the team exhibited exceptional attention to detail and thoroughness. Carl and Maureen meticulously reviewed all necessary documents, leaving no stone unturned. This level of dedication gave us great peace of mind, knowing that Carl and his team would handle things with the utmost care and diligence. Overall, our experience with the Zacharia - Brown was exceptional. Thanks to their expertise and guidance, we can keep Dad in long-term care. I highly recommend Carl at Zacharia Brown to anyone in need of elder law services. His unwavering commitment, combined with his vast expertise, makes him a true gem in the elder law industry

I hired Kari Baumgart to be my attorney for $3000 in a child custody battle. I was impressed at the beginning because my ex was afraid of her. Over time I realized she was writing papers without a purpose other than to put money in her pocket. She gave me a ride in her fancy convertible to placate my stress. I was an idiot back then.

I hired Kari with a $5000 retainer to handle my divorce. She was great in our initial consultation, but after that she was impossible to reach. Each attempt at calling her resulted in either no answer, full voicemail, or a brand new paralegal who had no knowledge of my case. My hiring her only added to my already stressful divorce situation. Long story short: I had to hire another attorney to handle my divorce and I had to file charges against her with the OFFICE OF DISCIPLINARY COUNCIL. I only knew to do this as I had a friend who was an attorney. NEVER HIRE THIS ATTORNEY.

I consulted Kari to represent me in my divorce. I was looking for a female attorney when I chose her. I showed some interest on her website and she promptly called me on a Saturday and spoke with me over the phone at no charge. I was really impressed with her at first until after I gave her the $2,000 retainer fee. It seemed like every month I was receiving a statement from her paralegals but wasn't making any headway with her representing me. Every time I would call her office it seemed like it was a different paralegal doing the paper work for me. The turnover rate in her office was so high I should have known from that alone. I thought my divorce was finalized and she told me she needed another $1,000 retainer fee to "finish up some paperwork". She personally called me on this matter and told me that whatever money was left would be refunded to me. I assumed the divorce was finished because I never heard from her again and when I called the office to inquire about any leftover retainer money I was told that they didn't know anything about it. So I figured I was out $1,000 but oh well. Fast forward a couple of years my ex wife called me when she went to change back to her maiden name and she realized after calling the prothonotary office that we legally were still married. The court sent paper work to Kari Baumgart's office about this and Kari's office never contacted me at all. And when I found all of this out I called Kari's office and the number was disconnected. Thankfully my ex was cool about everything and I went to the courthouse and took care of everything myself. Lesson learned here, do not ever contact Kari Baumgart for anything!!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
