I consulted Mr. Ferguson regarding my partner's felony 1 count of receiving stolen property. He really listened to our side even though our case was weak. He showed empathy. He kept talking beyond the alloted time. We would have retained him immediately but our finances were an issue. We would highly recommend him for any criminal defense cases.

Very professional and understanding attorney. Joe provided me an excellent service in the performance of his handling of my case with and the complex issues surrounding it. All things considered, I could not have asked for a better outcome. The value gained through Joe's representation in peace of mind alone was well worth the cost of hiring him to represent me. I have no regrets and would not hesitate to recommend him to a friend or family member.

Kyle has always given me the best guidance when it’s came to my case. He’s never once directed me in the wrong direction. Always tells me what I need to hear not what I want to hear. He has been more than flexible with after hour calls in an emergency and has gone above and beyond for me. Couldn’t ask for a better attorney.

Nothing negative to say here except the fact that he's 99.8% retired. He's been hanging on too that .2% for some time now and must be collecting pretty good interest on it.

Brian helped us through a business real estate deal. He was friendly and knowledgeable. He made things easy to understand for us and was always there to answer any questions we had. He put our minds at ease each time we encountered a bump in the road and I always felt better about the situation after speaking with him. I would and have highly recommended him to everyone!

We came to Alan with a personal injury case involving my father. After thoughtful review and research, he took on the case. While Alan kept my Mother and Father up to date as the case progressed, he was very generous with his time in letting me (an out of state daughter) call in for status and explanation as well. He worked hard and had to deal with two insurance companies as well as medicare. We were grateful and trusted his pace and strategy. We benefited from his efforts with an award that we were more than satisfied with. He's a trustworthy man and it was a pleasure working with him. I want to make note that his staff was very warm, gracious and more than helpful. What a bonus!

Dominic was amazing handling my case , he was understanding concerning my situation , he worked with me through everything and made it so I wasn't afraid to stand in front of the judge. He kept in touch with me and never did I feel like I was alone. I could have got 2 years in prison , and in return I got 8 months probation. He did a wonderful job and I honestly can't thank him enough for everything that he did for me and my family . He handled my ex's DUI case and did amazing with that as well. I will definitely refer others to his amazing law firm!

Attorney Ferguson handled my mother’s estate, and I would not recommend him or this firm for this type of representation. Sadly, I really do not believe Attorney Ferguson worked to resolve my mother’s estate with me or my family in mind. I am not angry really; I’m certain it’s not a personal issue, I am sad, perhaps frustrated, because I have no other recourse but to accept the decisions that have been made. Find an attorney that will talk to you, has the bandwidth to honor your families grieving process, and keep the line of communication open - consistently.

I was on the other side of Mr. Brode as a defendant in a custody suite a few years ago and recently learned that a complaint of “ chaotic Household” was suggested by Mr. Brode , against me , to his client even though it was clearly an untrue charge. Was this ethical on Mr. Brides behalf? It was admitted by the plaintiffs husband. I find Mr. Brides actions to be unethical and Buyer of “ Justice” beware. This one Attorney dreamt up an utterly false complaint for one client! How many others are there? Does this violate ethical principles that attorneys are to abide? Is this actionable against the plaintiff or Mr. Brode? What should be done if the ethical questions are found to be a violation? …

I have MS. I was assaulted during the time of a flare up. If you don't know what that means. It means you are weak and disoriented. You are fatigued beyond belief and terrible nerve pain. I am disabled! So I want to know what people think of that? How do you feel about a disabled person not being able to defend themselves? Is it ok for a disabled person to be attacked? Absolutely not! But yet I was and oh the prejudice this county has is a complete joke. The public defenders office is a joke. They don't try to help you they only care about making the county money and keeping you in the system. So in the end this place needs to have someone come in and look into their corruption. I'm doing my best on my own to make this know to the public. But please pass it around. I am disabled I have proof and I just want justice for the crime that was done against me. I was assaulted and had my privacy violated. Let's put a end to this injustice!

I’m sure the district attorneys office works very hard. But sometimes you have to seek justice instead of police testimony. You can’t make false police report and lying under oath.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
