Mark Tobin assembled a team of experts to handle my complicated eminent domain case involving the Florida Department of Transport, which took over 2 years. During that time he led the team of experts, adding others as the developing case required, while keeping me fully informed of progress and any choices I could make on the decision tree. The case peaked in a marathon 12-hour negotiating session with the FDOT legal team, in which Mark was tireless in representing my interests, and he won the day (and the case) with an excellent settlement. As compensation for losing about half of the parking spaces for my commercial building, I received a large lump sum plus another large amount to cover the Cost To Cure, plus of course all my legal and professional fees.

I was referred to Mr. Gordon by a colleague, and found him to be very easy to work with! For work, I occasionally deal with attorneys, and they are usually very hard to reach. Mr. Gordon is fairly accessible, which put me at ease. He provided full-picture discussion, and was very respectful of what I had to say and the expectations I was hoping to set. Highly recommended.

Mark has been doing estate planning for me and my family for about 7 years now. He is very knowledgeable, stays current with tax laws and is a very good listener. We sat with him for a few sessions, explained our concerns and needs and he undertook the task of creating an estate plan that met all of our needs. During that process, we met several times to review and fine tune the plan. I was pleased that Mark offered us some excellent insight into areas that we had not considered. I like that he is responsive when we have questions about some new issues.

I gave my foreclosure defense case to Larry and I must say the way he handle my cases is SUPERB! I have been in foreclosure for almost 2 years and it got to the point my case was dismiss! Just because he handles the case with personalized attention and following up frequently he was able to do a great defense. Of course, no attorney promises any results, but with Larry I felt I was not one more on the pile of clientele like most attorneys. Any way, he is currently working to prepare a counter-complaint to the bank for many federal violations she discover. If you want an efficient, knowledgeable attorney with a REASONABLE PRICE, then you should contact him. Simply the BEST REAL ESTATE ATTORNEY!

About two years ago, my mother and I had the unfortunate discovery that a family trust might not have been handled in the manner in which the grantor intended and not knowing what to do or who to hire, I sought the advice of a very close real estate attorney friend who suggested I speak to Chris Spuches. Having lived in Miami our entire lives and having heard from my attorney father for decades who were supposedly the best litigators in the community, we interviewed several attorneys before moving forward, including a few that my father would speak highly of over the years. We suspected that this was going to become a long and complicated lawsuit and choosing the right attorney was not just critical to winning the case, but essential because that person was going to become a part of our daily lives. Suffice to say that this was one of the most important decisions we would ever have to make as the consequences either way were tremendous. There is no doubt that any of the old time big name litigators would have been the safe choice, but the fact is, they would have been the wrong choice! From the very moment we met Chris Spuches, we were certain that he was going to be our guy. Chris is not just incredibly bright, he is also methodical, intuitive, perceptive and strategic. Furthermore he has a fantastic ability to articulate and turn the often complicated legalese into language that is easily understood. Surprising to us though, was the fact that he is soft-spoken, which is not just only opposite of what we expected, but is clearly the asset that he uses to win over others because his arguments come through in a genuinely honest and powerful manner. That said, and as much as he is soft spoken, he is not the attorney you want on the other side of any battle because he has a remarkable way of navigating the witness exactly where he wants them to go. Nothing he does or says is haphazard. His strategy is obviously carefully planned and repeatedly tested before he enters the court and it is very apparent given the many rulings the court has made in our favor, all of which have been devastating to the other side. Of equal importance to me is that Chris is patient and understanding. I will be the first to say that I am not the easiest of clients, but somehow, Chris has kept me focused, calm and tempered and he has done the same with my mother. If ever there was something for us to get worked up about, it would be the horrendous and shocking events of this case and the terribly upsetting fact that it has ripped apart a family. Yet somehow, Chris has managed us the same way he has managed the lawsuit, perfectly. There are thousands of litigators in South Florida, but there is only one for us and Chris Spuches is that person. I simply cannot recommend or frankly imagine, a better litigator anywhere and having found him has helped turn darkness and even moments of despair, into optimism, victory and the happiness we had temporarily lost.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
