I am not sure why anyone on here would rate Steve less than stellar. He is not good at Marketing, yes. But he is a great attorney. My ex-wife keeps finding attorneys that are good at marketing. Guess what - Steve out-advocates them all - literally smokes them. Even the big name guys. Steve Durance represented me in a contentious divorce. Hundreds of hours and three years now. He never overcharged me either. Just the opposite. Steve is the most honest and decent attorney you can find in Midland. Sometimes too honest. He is not willing to cut corners. And he is worth double of what he charged me. I got to him because my previous attorney was not willing or even able to handle all the trouble my ex created. Steve cut through all the malarkey he made things look simple and he turned a 5,000 page court file into a beautiful 15-page closing brief outshining the 75 pages the opposing attorney dared to file after ten days of trial. The opposing attorney found it important enough to file a 37 page answer to the 15 page brief. Steve's son Peter now works in the firm too, and he's lucky to have a role model like Steve. If Peter represents you - you can count yourself lucky. Miranda, THE legal assistant with a secret JD is great handling everything too. When it comes to divorce attorneys, there is simply none better to be found in Midland Michigan.

Steve Durance represented by husband in a felony case in 2018 and the it was biggest mistake we made! Steve actually was the person that told me at the courthouse that my husband had just died and after that I never heard from Steve Durance again!!!! If you’re looking for a lawyer to represent you that cares, don’t use STEVE!

I don't believe my experience with Mr. Durance and his staff could have gone any better. Being an out of state resident I really didn't know what to expect, but after the first phone call I knew I was in good hands. I was kept up to date as the case progressed and was extremely satisfied with the results. I would recommend Mr. Durance to anyone. Great attorney, great staff, and great results..... case closed!!

We instructed Mandy Pecher when we began a complex family law process in the United States. She is an expert in her field, with the knowledge, experience and cultural sensibilities required to assist families dealing with difficult international legal matters. Mandy is very much the kind of person you want on your side. Her legal and moral support have been absolutely invaluable and we can’t recommend her highly enough.

„Frau Rechtsanwältin Pecher hat uns über eine sehr lange Zeit extrem kompetent und erfolgreich in unserer US Immigrationssache anwaltlich betreut. Dafür bedanke ich und meine Familie mich ganz herzlich und kann Frau Rechtsanwältin Pecher dringendst für U.S. amerikanische Einwanderungssachen empfehlen.“ We are doing so good, that my Wife and I we just purchase a wonderful House.

We contacted Mandy Pecher in May 2012 and filed paperwork for my wife's green card in June 2012. She kept us informed about the processes for the following months in 2012 - but totally disappeared in 2013. It's May 2013 now and we haven't heard from her for months. We called the agency that takes care of immigrations as we were really getting worried about things - and they told us that they contacted her beginning of 2013 concerning a handling fee which to this day is still open... And because of the non-payment, the agency didn't process my wife's paperwork for 4-5 months. Good thing that we sent her a bunch of money for nothing... The idea behind hiring an attorney was that we wouldn't have to deal with any agencies and paperwork.

When my ex-wife made up false domestic violence claims to attempt to gain the upper hand in her divorce Leland Burton was the public defender assigned to my case. I made it clear to Mr Burton that I was innocent and had proof. The Shelterhouse social workers who were supposed to be advocating for my wife as the "victim" told the prosecutor J Dee Brooks the will be advocating for me at trial as the victim of false allegations and a controlling wife. Shelterhouse went against their own policy of not representing anyone with pending criminal charges due to me having 100% exculpatory evidence. Burton told me he knew I was innocent, but I need to either take the plea deal or hire a private attorney if I go to trail. I did not have money to hire a private attorney. Prosecutor J Dee Brooks threatened to add two additional charges if I do not plea out. I had no prior record of any kind, not even a traffic violation. It appears Leland Burton was working for the prosecution, not the public. My wife told me she would go to jail for extortion and filing false charges if I took it to trial with the evidence I had. She said that since she was still breast feeding the best thing I can do for our daughter is plea out so our daughter isn't without breast milk. She promised to go to therapy and work on our marriage if I plead guilty. She then immediately filed for divorce after I plead guilty to a crime Burton and the prosecution knew I was innocent of. She tried you use my plea as ground to gain 100% custody of our daughter. I was able to prove my innocence to the court and get custody, but ultimately was forced to move out of the area my daughter lives in for fear her mother can make up false charges again in the future, and I will now have a first strike on record with the court, and could go to prison for another false allegation due to not having funds to properly represent myself again. If you are innocent don't go with Leland Burton. Let's be frank, he gets his pay from the very court that's charging you. He doesn't care about innocence and justice or defending the public. Shameful behavior for a supposed public defender.

He did not bring up things he was told about by me half a dozen times at least and said nothing in court. After court i had questions about things he didn't do and things the judge said and he would NOT RETURN A PHONE CALL. Said as soon as the trial ended he is not my attorney any more and world not anwser any question. At such a critical time in my life, I trusted and depended upon Mr. Burton for taking care of my expungement. He literally did nothing with my time-sensitive case, which began in January 2014. At first, he told me this process should take about 2-3 months. He seldomly returned my phone calls/emails and I was always the one initiating contact. 4 months in, Mr. Burton still had not given me the go-ahead to get my fingerprints done, which is required to begin the application process. I had to ask if I need to get them done and what I needed to do with them. In my opinion, the attorney should be the one to tell me what I need to do and when, not the client. I was given a hearing date of June 18. After not hearing from Mr. Burton, the day before my hearing, I asked what time to meet, what to bring, what to say, etc. and 15 minutes before closing time he responds saying he made an error and the hearing was postponed until July 29. This was only hours before my "hearing". If I had not emailed him, I am confident I would have been stood up at the courthouse with no actual hearing. I have since retained a new attorney who, during the consultation hour, filed all paperwork and scheduled a new hearing because the July 29th date Mr. Burton gave me was also a farce. Turns out the copy of my fingerprints were never even sent in and the paperwork was never even filed. Mr. Burton still had my fingerprints which he was supposed to file with my expungement application seven months ago. I do not wish to write ill about Mr. Burton, but I would not grant this experience on my worst enemy. I had so much riding on this expungement- school, nursing licensure, starting a family, and he did nothing but waste 7 months of my time. This should have been over and done with in March but here I am, still waiting. I felt utterly betrayed by Mr. Burton and am extremely disappointed in the way he handled my case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
