I hired Jane for a family law case. She was professional, attentive, personable, accommodating and very knowledgeable. She did not "nickel and dime" me to death by charging for every LITTLE thing she did. She was very realistic about where she thought I stood in the matter and did not sugarcoat anything along the way. I don't think I would have had the same wonderful outcome if I had not had Jane as my lawyer.

Attorney Holiday saved my job a few years ago when she worked at Cross Law firm. She cares about her clients and is very knowledgeable about the law and made it very clear and concise about my rights in the case and what was being violated by the employer. It is not about money with her, she worked with me on a payment plan that made it possible for me to retain her legal help. She really cares about helping people and will fight for you until justice is served. An outstanding attorney and an awesome person! Attorney Holiday ROCKS!

Told her I wasn't interested in pursuing a certain tactic but she said that was the first step which I later found out wasn't true after over $2k in fees. Was a waste of my time and money. She dangles hope of representing you in court on a contingency basis but then drops you after the hourly work is done that she talked you into. I have seen other reviews saying similar things.

Because of her I am now being accused of Fraud by the u.s gov't. When she realized she had done wrong she said my case was at a "higher" level and recommended another lawyer. Thanks to her now I face very hard circumstances that may cause the separation of my family. Do not come here if you are expecting a well informed, thrust worthy lawyer. I guess this is what I get for going cheap.

Just wanted the 70k fee he would earn from the case. Hectried to take my husband’s money too but we were not having it. I feel so bad for his victims. A terrIble human!

Matthew is a bold strategist that tackles issues head on with the goals of his clients being his utmost priority. I contacted Matthew as soon as I knew I had a hearing (a day prior!) He immediately reached out to me and gave me a consultation. Speaking to Matthew gave me the confidence I needed to hire him to keep my innocence. He immediately took note of my side of the story in full context and told me of what to prepare for in the charging court. Matthew's wit and knowledge was important in getting my case completely dismissed before I was even charged!

Very weak in dealing with opposing attorney. After months of calls, emails, a court trial for a municipal matter, we ended up back at the original stipulation/penalty. He knows how to file paperwork, that’s about it. I feel like he represented my ex, more than he represented me. My ex was pro se, so my ex knew how to run up my tab. He always told me I had to be reasonable, but yet my ex was far from reasonable. So I just nodded my head yes on lots of issues as my attorney wanted me to do, to be reasonable. Thru the years we paid a lot of money and didn’t have a lot of return. Waste.

I was refered to Mr.Saks through my niece, she spoke very highly of him. I thought well let me hire him as my lawyer then, sadly to say I have not seen really any results from him. I call, leave messages, email him, I get nothing no call back, email nothing it's been 2-3 years since we started my case and still I haven't heard anything from him, his office no one. Now all I want is to get my records so I can hire another attorney that can do what he was supposed to!!! I just think that if Mr. Saks couldn't take on this case if it was to much for him to handle he should've told me.

I put more effort and time into my case than Brian did. It was an evidentiary hearing and I gathered mounds of evidence and I understood that some of it may not be submitted but I am not exaggerating when I say, Brian did not submit a single piece of evidence. In the Judge's findings for why he did not agree with me were many places where he cited that there was not evidence to support my statements. There was plenty of it, on Brian's desk, that he never submitted to the court. My entire case ended up being based on hearsay because of this and I believe there should be grounds for discipline for not putting in a good faith effort to represent my case.

I would strongly recommend you get a contract at the time of hiring this lawyer. On the phone, he quoted $175 but when I received an itemized bill which was mailed after the second payment, the rate said $225. In addition, he is not able to handle partition of properties which is something to be aware of in cases where you may be forced to go to court. After paying $875 in fees with no more headway than prior to me hiring him, I terminated our relationship. I paid this amount more or less for him to speak to me and leave messages for the other client's lawyer (he spoke once to her). Do your research before hiring a lawyer. I'm on the hunt again but I've learned my lesson and will be asking for a contract at the time of hire along with expectations.

Lauren is personable and presents as caring and capable. However, phone messages were not listened to, even when a couple messages were left providing information regarding a team meeting that needed to be changed. Over the course of a month, several emails were not responded to and some wrote that she would contact me by phone at a specific date and time, then I never would hear from her. The lack of communication was too frustrating to keep this lawyer retained. I hired Lauren for a fast moving and changing case that had a time deadline to meet. It was clear that If this case was to have a chance for change, Lauren was not the attorney I should have hired. She may be a fine attorney for someone who has a case that does not have a deadline to meet.

We had a horrible workers compensation claim experience with this firm. They were not thorough, we trusted them too much. 6 months after settlement we received a $6,000.00 medical bill. We reached out to them only to be told, sorry you signed the settlement agreement. We were naive to trust that they were looking out for us, we never received a bill prior as this was part of the settlement, the firm even said they called them. We know its our fault for signing without it being on there but never did we think that our lawyer would let that slide and accept the settlement without all medical bills they were aware of being included. We were a pain to them and i kind of think they just wanted to be done with us. They said they never received a release for them to get the bill, they acknowledged they knew about the medical bill and still settled the claim knowing it was outstanding. Now we have to pay it out of pocket. In my opinion, there are much better Workers Compensation firms out there. They made sure to take their percentage of the settlement. They also had one of their criminal defense attorneys handling our workers compensation claim, look on their website, no where does it say Thomas Simon specializes in workers compensation, we reached out to Richard Cayo asking for a different attorney to which he said Attorney Simon was competent,... competent enough that he settled knowing their were outstanding medical bills....

By far the worst attorney to represent you. She does not understand the law, has no court decorum and has no conscience. She must have gotten her law degree out of a cracker jack box. She was court-appointed to represent in a child custody case and didn’t even know the child’s name months into the case. Gave legal advice that was complete opposite of 3 other more experienced attorneys, one who said her advice is borderline criminal. Completely incompetent attorney. She should be investigated by the WI STATE BAR! Do not recommend, stay far away.

Attorney Brooks was appointed as my representation in children's court and provided the worst representation possible. She is extremely unprofessional and will refuse to comply with any requests you make. She could not even remember my children's names or details of the case. She is only there to get paid by the state and won't even attempt to win your case. I will be filling an investigation against her with the office of lawyer regulation for several acts of misconduct. Any clients who get her appointed as there council should refuse her and ask for another attorney unless you want to loose your case and your children. She had no interest in my case and went against everything I requested and did irreparable damage to my case. She is the worst Attorney and hopefully this invitation will result in her getting disbarred it would save a lot of families from getting destroyed and save countless children from being permanently damaged by the system.

After two court appearances he moved quickly to have me enter a plea. Asked me when I would be ready to go to jail when I told him things were moving too quickly, i felt rushed to take a plea. No criminal background but facing misdemeanor charge. I never received copy of criminal complaint or review of the discovery. I assumed in his professional experience he would provide those to me. I asked to judge to withdraw him as counsel after he raised his voice at me before court. I watched another client of his complain to their family about his tactics. Its been 8 days since court and He has yet to provide my file to public defenders office or myself so I can obtain new counsel before court in 6 days. Poor defense attorney. A friend recommended Nola as the best but she seems to have declined. From the first phone call I was told repeatedly consultation would be $395. Told this 2 times by Nola and 3 times by various office staff on phone and before and after consultation. Our first session ran over 1 hour as she asked questions sending me off into tangents rather than getting the story out. After 1 hour I asked about what I would have to pay for additional time. She told me "Don't worry about it," but later sent me a bill for an additional $395. She took notes but the typed summary she sent a few days later was full of factual errors. Moreover she refused to give me a straight answer when I questioned how she would proceed or what my chances of winning would be. Rather she made vague assurances that after I signed a contract with her she would reveal her plan. I grew increasingly suspicious of her professional capabilities and after careful consideration decided to look for someone else.

Paid 395.00 for initial consult. All she did was take notes, no advice. I provided significant typed documentation and she proceeded to take notes on a legal pad off of my documents while I sat there. Then she passed case on to associate who didn't review the file and couldn't read her notes so he had several pages of questions for me that were already addressed in detail. Associate drafted a letter to my opponent that was terribly incorrect and didn't reflect the facts and statements I provided in writing and verbally. Hours and hours of time wasted at hundreds of dollars an hour. Terrible customer service.

After receiving my retainer fees and filing fees, it was very difficult to get information regarding my case. I was given a bankruptcy sheet stating what I would expect but when trying to call the office or email, it was like pulling teeth. I had to followup on creditors because many weren't even notified, and they would do things at their own pace. They felt I was "obsessive and controlling" when calling or emailing them for information. I also found some weren't even listed causing things to be amended after doing my part in sending them the information. Overall, I would not recommend this office or this attorney. If you want to get debt relief, find a better solution, "another attorney". Save yourself the stress and aggravation!

Once the retainer was placed, communication and getting my questions answered was very much like pulling teeth! His staff became very agitated when I called twice a week to make sure specific items were included in my #13. In the end, they were not. On top of the extreme stress my financial situation delivered, the frustration of communicating with Mr Pfeifer and his staff created more difficulty. I do not believe Mr Pfeifer has empathy for his clients or their circumstances. For me, it was immediately evident once the retainer was placed with Credit Solutions. While he has excellent law abilities, his desire to make sure his clients are educated is nearly non-existent.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
