Bill invoiced me $1500 which went into a trust account. This was collected via my credit card to a Clio payment portal. Upon completion of the project my total was $1219.00. Oddly Bill was insistent to mail me back a check for the $281.00 instead of just refunding my card which is how I payed. Weeks went by and I suggested to Bill that he cancel the check as MN mail does not take that long. He then e-mailed me 3 weeks after claiming the check cleared his bank account and was cashed. I never received a check nor did I cash it. When I asked Bill to send me a picture of the check and what bank it was cashed at he went completely radio silent and would not return my calls or e-mails. This is very small amount of money and barely worth the time to report this. I just feel that law firms have an ethical obligation to manage trust accounts and client balances honestly. If mistakes are made communication at a minimum is a must.

Mr. Nolan was ill prepared and did not appear to be aware of all the facets of the law to properly assist me. He did not keep his promises to me; and did not respond in a timely manner. Thus I paid more than I needed to for his work.

We hired this attorney to help write a contract. We do not know the law so we hired a lawyer. We wrote a contract and it was defaulted on. When we went to apply the terms of the contract we found out that there was a state statue which prevented our contract from being enforced as written. We are disappointed that we were not informed of the staue prior to writting the contract.

Misunderstood mediation process and tried to send me without representation- which the mediator questioned and corrected. Missed filing deadline and caused postponement of mediation. Gave opposing counsels their request despite what I wanted/ costing thousands before the hearing. Was blatantly wrong in some emails and didn’t acknowledge mistakes when called out. Still charged over $500/hr despite mistakes. I’m in process of filing with the licensing board.

I hired this attorney and firm to represent me in a drug liability suit 2 years ago. I had to have 5 brain surgeries as a result of this drug and left me unemployable. I entrusted this firm to represent me and get my life back. This firm has been ignoring me the last several months now. I have only talked to the attorney once and they never consulted me on the means of how the would achieve my objectives. They had only recently started discovery in which they had me get my medical records--2 years after I retained them. After I received my medical records they decided to completely ignore all my phone calls and emails. This has made me lose all hope in life as I was counting on them to represent me in such an important matter. Now I am left alone and in the dark. I have no idea what is going on in my case and feel this firm is actually working against me rather than in my best interest. I would stay away from this firm as they do not care about their clients and they take there sweet time for everything. Now I have to try and find a new lawyer to go over everything in my case causing me to relive my horrible experience. I will probably have to spend thousands more on counseling thanks to Sweeney. Thanks for nothing Sweeney.

Did not file with the court for a year and a half. He lied to me every time I asked where we were with my case. He only filed after I contacted the county attorney, which she contacted him. I fired him and got a new attorney and my case was done in 3 months.

Jim was very difficult to reach. He never responded to email until the third or fourth attempt. The document I received from him had multiple basic errors. When I returned the document with comments, he did not get back to me. Weeks later when I attempted to get back in touch, I learned through an auto-email reply that he had switched firms, leaving me completely in the lurch. I ended up paying hundreds of dollars for a useless document.

Mark represented me in my divorce. He charged me $1,000,000. He never filed a motion for legal fees. He was not a good listener. He kept saying wait until trial I will take care of this at trial. He stopped my other lawyer from filing for legal fees. After he was paid $500,000 I borr from family and he kept refusing to file for fees he quit 41 days before my trial. Then he had his friend and lawyer Terry Fleming send a letter to the judge badmouthing my lawyer. The judge read the letter in to record and that lawyer quit. I was left with no lawyer at all. Please never sign an agreement he puts in front of you. I am a housewife. He is a super lawyer ? My husband is a brutal and ruthless multi millionaire. Mark was supposed to protect me. Now I have file bankruptcy. If Nancy Berg makes you use him do not trust him.

As President of Henson Effron she was willing to overlook and defend one of her colleagues who blatantly failed their duties (which is resulting in a board complaint). Another attorney at the firm failed a hearing submission deadline, advised incorrectly and had to be corrected by the judge, and should have been pulled from their duties due to lack of ability to perform (during their own family emergency). Lisa wouldn’t participate in remedy of the situation which involved clear lack of competent decisions by another attorney at the firm in which she is President. For this reason, Lisa lacks in ethics. I wouldn’t recommend her or this firm to anyone.

This case involves an HOA suing for alleged unpaid dues. Why would an attorney from Tennessee be involved in a case in Minnesota? Because there is more to this case than meets the eye. I did not consult with Michael, but I had to check the box to post this comment. My hope is that he will be fair.

I retained David Wandling for council on an issue I had with my lease. When I first approached him he made it seem like this action was a no-brainer to pursue. Well it wasn't $4,000 and a month later I was still evicted for something I didn't do. I would have been much better off just paying the move fee and vacating the premise (even though I had done nothing wrong), but I chose to pursue a claim on David's encouragement. David is a very nice man and I enjoyed working with him on a personal level. I simply don't think he was a very good litigator. Maybe there are other areas where he is a good lawyer, but when it comes to contract law and lease negotiation I think you'd be better off retaining me to represent you after what I learned.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
