I was going through a difficult and unexpected divorce. Mr. Casteel and his staff went above and beyond to make sure that not only was I protected legally but that I understood the process that I was going through and what to expect moving forward. I would highly recommend his services to anyone. His expertise and commitment to resolving my situation was more than I could have expected.

He shouldn't trash Joe's rep for the defendant's obviously massive offenses for which there were no defensive actions. My husband and Joe go back five decades at least. Joe is a very intelligent and caring attorney. AVVO please consider removing that 1 star review as it is fraudulent.

On a previous case with Mr Garcia I had to do all the footwork myself. I would call and he would usually not respond to my concerns or questions except for "okay". He also missed several meetings that he guaranteed me he would be at. In my current case I am requesting for a new lawyer because he does not believe in me and has been downright rude, during the adversary hearing there were many statements that the witnesses made that were not true or they were giving their personal opinions from what that they thought rather than knowing the actual true answer so when I was put on the stand Mr Garcia hardly asked me any questions and he asked me no questions that would have helped to contradict what the witnesses said. Afterward when I asked why he didn't his response was "it wouldn't have helped anyways the judge had already made up her mind". The outcome from the hearing was horrible and I've asked Mr Garcia many times what I can and should do and he basically gave me no suggestions even when I would suggest things he would answer with vague responses such as "you can try" or "if that's what you want to do". I have reached out to him repeatedly for advice or suggestions. I just need to be pointed in the right direction and he hasn't done anything to help at all. I am extremely disappointed because I am more than willing to do whatever it takes to turn my situation around and it's very obvious that he doesn't care, He doesn't believe in me, and has made it more than obvious that he doesn't want to be on the case. He's doing the bare minimum he has to do.

As a family law attorney, I have used Phylis Offerman for countless mediations. She is professional, courteous and best of all she is good at helping the parties reach a resolution that will meet everyone's primary goals. I highly recommend Phylis.

I found Phylis Offerman to be highly competent and knowledgeable. She successfully mediated a complication issue in my divorce to everyone's satisfaction, did not appear to waste time (which is $$$), and was very professional in every aspect of the proceedings. I highly recommend her to anyone mediating family law matters!!!

If you are looking for someone who is genuinely interested in helping you mediate a divorce, stay away from Phylis Offerman. First of all, she kept us waiting for an hour just to get into our scheduled appointment. Of course, we have nothing better to do with our time than to wait on her. Second, she isn't interested in any kind of good faith mediation. She basically spent all of 20 minutes telling me what I wanted wasn't going to happen and then she added a healthy dose of antagonism. Very classy. There was no give and take or offer and compromise that you would expect from a "mediator". Finally, you are graced with the pleasure of paying her $400 for being late, antagonizing you and offering no mediation help whatsoever. If you are having a Comal County divorce and need to go through mediation, stay far away from Phylis Offerman. She is a waste of your hard earned money! I'm sure there are several other mediators who take their job seriously and act with professionalism.

Jessica, did not even attempt to pretend to work for me. She never listened to the full extent of my story. She had no clue why we were even there. She refused to speak up for me or speak out. She didn't file papers I asked her too. She didn't listen to me when I told her which laws were violated. She refused to do anything a lawyer should. And we spoke maybe 2-3 x (for less than 5 mins each time) over the course of 9 months.. 3 trials, 2 mediation meetings and several other meetings. She refused to fight for my rights. Refused to fight for my children's rights. And wouldn't ask questions I begged her too. It's like she was working the opposite team of me. But j mean then again... She was Jennifer tharpes personal assistant before this. So really, doesn't surprise me

Won't return calls are the least of your worries with this attorney. LITERALLY charged 3 times what other attorneys cost and when you need to speak to him, you might receive a call days later from an assistant who doesn't know anything either. Will offer suggestions that aren't applicable. The absolute worst experience I've ever encountered with a lawyer. Nightmare. Feels somewhat like he's not your attorney but rather extension of the prosecutions office.

Doesn't contact you when have court. I got a FTA because of him. Had to go back to jail. Doesn't have people skills. He would rather you plea out instead of going not guilty. He told me " I'm not going to fight a losing battle!". How the hell do you know it's a losing battle if you haven't heard my side. No paper work just his phone. All he shows you is what we already know.

I'll start by saying that David is a gernally kind and professional guy. Once I got concerns escalated to him, things were handled. With that out of the way... David's "assistant" was very kind prior to taking me on as a client. From then on, every phone call for an update was contentious. She would lie to get me off the phone. She would tell me how my calls for updates were preventing her from doing her job. She told me no less than 10 times that everything was going as scheduled and she'd call me when there was a change. I eventaully found out that she'd been lying ot me for 3 full weeks. My paperwork hadn't even been filed. It leads me to suspect that they filed ZERO paperwork from January until mid February, while she was learning the e-file system. During that time, I have no doubt that other people were being told what I was, that "everything was fine, we'll call you with an update." Every single call was like pulling teeth. I hired these people, paid tehm, for them to represent my interests. They were less expensive that many competitors, but David is pretty decorated. I'll add that his assitant told me on my first call to "ignore" the reviews posted here. She said Axxo was charging to remove bad reviews. The bad reviews exist for this attorney because it's a horrible practice. If I had to do it over, I would spend 3x what I did or handle it myself before I'd hire them again. This assitant is incompetent and dishonest. Her employer willfully ignores it. She took my number 20+ times in two months and never delivered teh promised callback. I had to call every time, to be treated as an inconvenience, and most times become angry jsut to get teh simplest things addressed.

I appreciated his council, but wish he kept me more informed on what the current stance of my case. Several times I showed to court at 8:30 (which was when the docket called for me to be present) and David did not show until 1:30 PM. When you are traveling out of town to come to court, communication would be appreciated. I felt taken advantage of and instead of his legal assistant being knowledgeable or responsible for following up with his clients, one he was hired, I had to beg to get him on the phone. Not professional and reassuring when you are dealing with matters that will ultimately effect a large part of your ilfe.

I hired this attorney to handle my case. I interviewed the firm and was assigned to her. No wonder she was available as she was absolutely the worst attorney I have ever hired. She was rude and her knowledge of law was very weak. I terminated her and the firm early and went to another attorney in town. There were errors in the knowledge that she shared with me. She cited wrong case law and there were errors in my paperwork.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
