I learned a valuable lesson never retain an attorney when colleagues with many years working in a court of law with Mr. Drobbin is unwilling to endorse him on this site. It's vital I share my experience because nobody should fall victim to the defendant you have no choice to file judgment and the attorney who is supposed to be representing you ethically and in a professional manner. Soon after retaining Mr.Drobbins. Several red flags became obvious and concerning. I noticed dates and times not appearing on any of his emails I printed to keep a hard copy on file. I must admit. It raised an eyebrow and I was praying the sinking feeling i had was merely paranoia. This guy isn't cheap so i set up a limit from the start to avoid issues later. I would only agree to pay as you go with a final total at the end and I assure you. There was no miscommunication on my part. 2 months after retaining his services. He wanted more money and added additional costs by informing me I had obtain a costly expert. This was upsetting news and unacceptable after he said wasn't required prior my decision to sign his agreement. As quickly as he promised and i signed his contract. I was trapped, I felt violated and betrayed. The trust value was gone. Especially after he said loudly it wasn't his problem! He works for LeClairRYAN LLC a very large legal firm I'm seriously considering suing besides filing a complaint to the office of attorney ethics of the Supreme Court of New Jersey. Always ALWAYS! keep documents in a safe place and be alert because you might need to fight your case to defend yourself from guys like this who fit the bill of a used car salesman with a chip on his shoulder.

I wish I could give no stars. If you are looking to over pay, chase down, never have your phone calls returned and be charged a ridiculous amount of money for what any attorney would do for you in an hour or 2.... This is your guy! Found this guy as a last resort because my own attorney was out of the country and needed someone to look over a simple non compete agreement and make changes using legal terminology that would protect me should I decide to leave the company. When I addressed a few of the discrepancies in the bill (issues in how many "review/revisions" he did, also some issues with not being able to see the changes he sent me as he even acknowledged he had to get his IT to look into, in turn he charged me for sending those changes 2 separate times) he never returned my call, never returned any of my 2 emails. The last time I heard from him was one day after I sent a certified letter with my check in it for payment because I am not about to go into collections over $1800.00 which he obviously so badly needs. In that email he was about to start to explain his bill but I hit the delete button after I saw the typical attorney language start to come out in his email... The time to talk was a week after I received the bill, not 2 months later.... Very unprofessional... Genova Burns Law Firm is where this guys works so if you happen to be in there... Beware of keith krAuSS ... Very unprofessional and very disappointed with my service.

We were involved in a case with this woman for almost one year and when it ended she couldn't recall any of our names. She had been responsible for representing my children that entire time. They're in a group home now because of her. That's all I've heard. May God have mercy on her soul.

She is supposed to be the representative in court of minors involved in a family court case since obviously they're too young to rep themselves. She's actually a shill for the prosecution (dcpp) and it's well known she's sleeping with a Judge who's court she appears in regularly (Judge Wright). I do mean WELL known!!!

Mr. Robert Mintz, a lawyer from Newark, NJ was retained for services. Due to my delicate emotional state at the time he made statements as "he knows people and would make it go away" to get my business and have me sign the retainer. During the process of next few years, he did not appear to know the facts straight, would rely on his junior counsel to update him on the case. He would try to schedule frequent office appointments with no specifics to discuss (only for the sole purpose to bill client) and only for general small talk. After charging $130,000 and when I could not afford to pay him anymore he abandoned and dropped me from the case. He took advantage of my emotional distress and when I had difficulty paying him more, he would repeat phrases like, "you need to keep in mind, I will be keeping you out of jail". He did not care about me or the facts of my case, he simply wanted all my money. In my opinion all his billing was inappropriate (e.g billed for having lunch with his junior lawyer.... apparently he discussed my case....... really!!). I would never recommend him as a lawyer.

He was hired by my friends family for a potential criminal case. He mislead them and over a year charged them over $140K dollars and didn't do anything productive. Many times he had no clue what was going on in the case and had to ask his junior assistant for answers, and appeared under influence of something. Before the real case even started, and when took away all the money and my friend couldnot pay him anymore, he dropped out of the case and left my friend hanging.

Mr. Nguyen was hired to file for a citizenship petition. The case is a bit complicated, he collected all the fees for his compensation, paper works, and miscellaneous. Turned out, USCIS denied the case due to missing paper works that he had to prepare which he has charged from the beginning. Now he wanted more money to go appear. My thoughts are, he should had disclosed everything, the money, steps by steps and let the client decides if they want to proceed with him rather than charge and charge and not get things done. If you are Vietnamese and don't speak the language well, please go see different attorney, they might charge a bit higher but you will not get screwed over. Bottom line, Mr Nguyen is a very irresponsible, lack of knowledge, a disappointment.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
