Matt, practices in Missouri. He is a spineless lawyer that grossly overcharges clients for “work” he doesn’t do.

Matt has been helping in all of my business and personal legal matters since 2005. He is involved with everything I've done in business up to date with timely and correct information. He's also helped in my estate planning as well as every major legal decision in my personal life. He's built all of my contracts for every part of my business. He is always on time or ahead of schedule with everything I have asked of him. Matt's personal approach has made every aspect of working with him a very comfortable and actually pleasing experience. His availability for questions and his ability to answer those questions has always been amazing. i currently have 4 LLc's, 3 incorporation's in 2 separate states and Matt's handled it all with ease allowing me to be able to concentrate on my business and not my legal affairs.

I had troubles finding a disability lawyer to take my case not because of my conditions, but because of my age. She prepared me by letting me know that it will take some time because of my age but my conditions qualified me and was very confident that I would win my case. She was prepared every corner in my fight and worked around that I lived in a rural area not easily accessible of making trips to her office for hearings, paperwork and any other issues that may have arised. I really am grateful for all her support and hard work. I recommend her highly for fighting for disability.

Rita walked my wife through everything, made sure all the documentation was in order. All in all, she was awarded SSDI and fee was very reasonable. I would highly reccomend Rita.

In the beginning everything went well to a certain extent. There were errors in documentation. Getting a hold of the attorney was very difficult, even when voicemail's where left. Eventually towards the end I did receive misguided information. Which was very unfortunate and the case was moved else where.

I had retained this attorney to clear the title to my home. Both parents had passed intestate over 15 years ago. He indicated the process would take about six month and a retainer was paid. Six months later it was not complete but he invoiced me for $2700. I call the office and he never returns my calls. I email him and out of 10 emails, he responds to one and then only to ask when is a good time to call me to explain. It has been over a year and he has not finished this. He has been very uncommunicative unless pushed. I finally had to hire another attorney to complete this. I have asked for the certified copy of my mother's death certificate back and he has not returned it. I would absolutely NOT recommend this attorney to anyone ever! One star because I can't give a negative star rating!

Brad came to me and introduced himself to me when I was in the process of building my business as a brand new cigar bar (and a brand new bar owner). I wasn’t sure if I was going to need his services or not but from the beginning he was very professional and very polite, so I decided to keep his card. Very soon after his introduction, I realized I needed a lawyer and decided to give him a call instead of calling my former lawyer (that I had been using). I’ve been very happy with my decision in calling him. He has been a huge asset to my company. Brad is very knowledgeable in cigar bar and business laws/regulations. He’s very informative, very punctual and he helps make my life less stressful. Whenever I call him with a problem, he clearly and confidently tells me what my rights are and then he tells me what he’s going to do for me. He takes care of the problem for me so I don’t have to worry about it. I really love that! I continue and will continue to use Brad’s services and highly recommend him as a lawyer to anyone! You're awesome Brad!! :o)

Jessica P Douglas was a terrible lawyer. Douglas was rude and presumptuous at our initial meeting. Miss Douglas arrogantly told me of how she had seen my criminal history when I didn’t actually have any prior charges. Miss Douglas was impossible to get ahold of on the telephone I called her 2 or 3 times a day for 3 months and in that time I received 1 sixty second phone call. Miss Douglas requested a continuance on my case without informing me that she was doing so or that doing so would ensure my stay in jail an additional month and a half. She failed to request a bond review or reduction hearing on my behalf. After leaving me in Douglas county for 3 months she failed to even get a slight reduction in the severity of my charges. I am now a convicted felon and Miss Douglas continued to insist that I was not complying with my probation when I was sentenced to time served with no continued monitoring. Thank you miss Douglas for assisting me on my decent homeless felon. You’re a peach!

This lawyer helped revoke a trust instead of amend it. Months later she accepted payment from a checking account from the revoked trust when she prepared a new will, and didn't question it. Her ignorance has caused the family more than decade of litigation and undid decades of estate planning.

I legit have court in the morning and I am not prepared. I asked my attorney (MARK BESTUL) to get a continuance and that I couldnt miss work for 90days and he emphatically said no! He said the judge wouldn't approve it as the initial order would be "halfway into the order." Ummm, what the hell does that even mean IF they can be granted from 1 year to 5? Nevermind my abuser (yes, it's DV) was granted a continuance to 1) LEAVE THE COUNTRY. Then, they 2) gave me the wrong address to the courthouse. Then, 3) it was reset for lack of time last week. I asked Mark this last week as getting all the necessary documents, etc would take some time AND I did not want to lose my job. I called and asked what I could do to escalate it for his boss to speak with him and was told I could file a grievance. Yes, a grievance that WOULD take weeks/months to resolve. I have court in the morning, less-than 1 weeks after the last court appearance that was reset by the judge. This is ridiculous. This is why people handle things their own way as doing it the "right/preferred" way gets you wholly ignored and minimized. I will end up dead and it'll be my fault that I didn't do what exactly? Report, file, comply??? He is a joke and this agency is a bigger joke. 😔

This is supposed to be an organization that helps those who cannot help themselves in a tricky, confusing legal system. They know their clients are likely to not have computers (why are their documents barely fillable on a phone??), and they know their clients likely do not have bank accounts (why TF do they ask for a debit card???), and they know their clients have likely been screwed over by the legal system time and again (why do they make it difficult to complete a process like getting a d*mn ID????). If I could leave zero stars I would. Do your job, Legal Aid of Nebraska. Do your job.

If you are looking for a lawyer that takes months to respond, Zach is your guy. It sometimes seemed like the only way to get him to respond was to CC the officer manager on emails so as to somewhat hold him accountable. Also, the law firm appears to have blocked my email addresses so I am no longer able to get in contact with my lawyer or anyone else in the office whatsoever. I still need the lawyer I hired to respond to me and update the contact information for a trademark filing. Horrible service.

Very poor quality of legal services. They do not know what they are doing. Wasted significant amount of my immigration application by not knowing to do what to do next...

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
