My case started out seemingly well, but by the end of it Mr. Cordes was more on board and in bed with my employer and he was me. He never explained anything, I was at a loss most of the time. He had me sign a document unbeknownst to me that would give away my rights to a settlement.

I went into my worker's comp claim completely and utterly unprepared for the fight ahead. To me it seemed like an open and shut case. Why would I ever need a lawyer? A few frazzled days and it became painfully clear I would need help. Nick was referred by my union. Side note: I had contacted other law firms and either got the bush off or no response at all, likely due to the modest nature of my claim. Nick was thorough and generous with his time and explained the system and choices ahead. He is very approachable and casual. I was impressed with his tenacity and confident he would fight for me even though it was a small case. With his help I won my claim, retained my job and was able to take the necessary time to heal.

I was referred by the Oregon State Bar and Attorney Ben was incredibly helpful and effective in assisting me with a security deposit issue. His expertise and guidance were invaluable throughout the process. He promptly drafted and sent a demand letter on my behalf, which led to a favorable resolution of the matter. He communicated clearly, kept me informed every step of the way, and ensured that my interests were well-represented. Thanks to his efforts, I was able to resolve the issue efficiently and with a positive outcome. I highly recommend Attorney Ben to anyone seeking legal assistance with landlord-tenant issues or any other legal matters. I had no idea what to expect but the worst when I called Angela's office. Her staff was so real and made me feel so comfortable, and explained what my options were to get a divorce. Who knew you had options let alone three. I wanted things to be as easy as possible and did not want to spend a lot of money. I chose to do mediation. I was told how to initiate the conversation with my spouse and everything was laid out step by step. I had anxiety going into that first meeting with Angela, and once we started the process, I felt comfortable, and knew I made the right choice. We had one session with Angela and everything else was done through email, and it was over. Angela and her staff are smart and so wonderful. I would recommend any one to call her first before you do anything.

I hired Angela Laidlaw to work with me on a guardianship/custody case involving my child. It was a very sensitive case and I feel that I was well informed of not only what to expect, but what was happening at every step. The price proposed is just about exactly what it came to in the end, and they worked with me on making payments each month that suited my budget. I feel like they were very knowledgable on the subject matter and kept me informed of my rights and best approaches. I would recommend Angela Laidlaw.

I am so grateful that I found Angela Laidlaw. She helped me manage the horribly sad process of ending my 25-year marriage with her calm demeanor, infinite wisdom, and great sense of humor. She was truly my advocate, not just my lawyer, and every step of the way she mapped out best- and worst-case scenarios and possible outcomes and helped me make the toughest decisions I've ever faced. She is collaborative by nature, but when my ex started playing hardball she went toe-to-toe with his attorney and didn't back down. I honestly can't imagine having to go through that whole ordeal without Angela on my side.

Hi Shannon, I hope all is well with you. I've been reflecting on this past year and what has happened since going to jail on 6/22/23. First I started looking for jobs has a Project Manager. but no one would even look at my resume unless I had a PNP Certification from the Project Management Institute, whatever that is. One year later, I've been studying since August and with my background have been accepted to take the PNP Exam. I will be passing the test next Thursday. With this certification I will be qualified to manager any project worldwide from my home office (excluding N. Korea, China, etc). The salaries for a certified Project Manager are in the 6 figures. Getting that DUI has sent me down a path that I didn't even know existed. I just wanted to say Thank You So Much for everything you did that helped me to have this excellent outcome. Sincerely, Lee Westerman

We hired Shannon on 2 separate occasions. One legal and one personal. In both situations, Shannon was always available and quick to respond to questions and concerns. For our personal situation, she walked us through the process and made it so much easier. During the legal situation, she was proactive and provided us with information as to what to expect and what we could hope for. She was always there for us and had our back. I was nervous when I first met with Kathleen, i wasn't sure if she was representing me, or was the Prosecuting Attorney. Her no-nonsense approach soon earned my complete respect, as she completely, unequivocally had my best interests at heart. What a complete breath of fresh air, to have someone on your side, fighting for your best outcome. Although it is my goal to never need an attorney again, i can assure you, that if i do, Kathleen Baker will get the call.

He was always very short with me the times I could actually get a hold of him. When deciding what to do with my case and explaining the plea offer he neglected to tell me multiple things that were in the offer including restitution payments. I asked him multiple times if I was loosing my licence and he told me no even though in the deal I was loosing it for 1 year. He neglected to tell me about A WHOLE charge that I was being charged with. I asked him if he would counter offer the deal asking for the DA to drop the felony to a misdemeanor, he came back saying they said not at this time but that once I successfully completed probation it would drop to a misdemeanor. He told me it was a good deal because it was a package and so I was only paying fines on one charge and there was only probation on one charge. Only after I plead in court and the judge was reading me back the details of the deal did I find out about there being fines and probation on both charges, restitution and the extra charge. When I brought it up to him he was extremely rude to me saying that the only reason I was saying anything was because I was about to get sentenced, admitting that he had neglected to tell me about the restitution fees but he wasn't sure about the rest and what did I want him to do. A year later when I am about to get off probation I find out that the crime being lowered to a misdemeanor is not in the judgement I call him and he tells me he never said that to me and he has no notes of that. I explain to him that, that was the only reason I took the deal and how we had, had issues before about his negligence of properly informing me of the details he just kept asking what I wanted him to do. He did not care about me or what happened to me and admitted to his negligence but what did I want him to do??

I hired Ruben to help with a personal injury case, auto accident. He was recommended to me by another attorney I work with doing interpretation. The opposing party's insurance did not want to pay after my PIP ran out. He did an excellent job of representing me and my daughter, and won the case. I would recommend him to anyone. He always responded quickly to my emails, texts and calls, even when he was on vacation. The case took over a year to resolve and we just finished. He was very good and I recommend him highly.

In the months leading up to my trial, her and her Investigator both praised her and called her a so-called pitbull lawyer. She refused to show me what her game plan was, she inherited this case from a $20,000 retainer Lawyer and threw out The case he had built, said she wanted to start fresh, that it was too much to go through? during my trial. She did absolutely nothing to cast doubt on the charges against me did not defend me, refused to listen to me and fight for me. She literally went from seven witnesses down to one and out of hundreds of documents my original lawyer built she brought two documents to Court. after being sentenced and being incarcerated it took two weeks for her to finally get a hold of me and return my call, at which point I asked her to amend my sentence and she filed the wrong motion. That was the last I ever heard from her. If you ask me, it looks like she is working with DA to incriminate men if you get her as a lawyer fire her immediately.

Linda tried very hard to get me to take a plea deal and even thought I was a different person with the same name. I hardly had any contact with her because she was hard to reach. I knew I was innocent and she assured me if the victim hadn't been subpoenaed she would file for a dismissal. Instead she filed a continuance behind my back and withdrew as my lawyer. I was very upset because I didn't want to continue, I wanted a trial. I felt all she was trying to do was incriminate me and would undermine any evidence I gave her. I suspect she works with the DA and tries to help him get convictions. Don't hire her!

Linda Haines is (literally) ranked the lowest, as in most undesirable, CIDC Member Lawyer for all of Clackamas County. If you find yourself to have been ill-fated enough to be charged with a crime and then had Linda Haines appointed to represent you, your best course of action is to fire her immediately (or request she recuse herself) and seek anyone else to represent you aside from her. She does absolutely nothing for her "clients" aside from trying to pressure them into signing court documents that are not drafted in their favor or interest. She's most definitely not a trial attorney, nor a defense attorney, she's hardly even a paralegal that should have retired a decade ago and left this profession long behind. She's more concerned with the rising price of Marlboro Red's and whether or not she's going to make it to her evening watering hole before happy hour ends than she is with any case that fait-fully crosses her desk. And her personal appearance in court is exactly what others have stated on this platform - she'll show up looking like she literally just rolled out of bed, grabbed a non-matching pair of pants and a blazer, put on her beat up old Sketchers tennis shoes, smoked a pack of cigarettes on the drive over, and still manages to always show up at least 20 minutes late, guaranteed. You've been warned!

Beware. He was the attorney on various cases for a family member of mine, every time we tried to call or text him to find information out about the case, next steps, and overall information about issues happening within the jail he wouldn’t answer or when he would it would be a rundown of what happened that day and it would always end with uncertainty of him not knowing what was next, etc. He also never made time to speak to his client and didn’t care about the case until he was fired where he tried to act like a victim. Get a different attorney, do not waste your time.

WORST ATTORNEY EVER RUN!! He did not contact myself who was to be a witness in a case until it was too late. He then attempted to instill fear into me. Nothing was prepared for my husbands case when trial was to be within days. No witnesses had be asked to come to court for the defense my self included. Then he proceeded to disclosed information to me not to be shared and tried to scare me into talking my husband into a deal. With all of Aidan’s incompetence my husband now has to represent himself at trial with NO preparation time as this wha the job the Adrian DID NOT DO. Run as FAST as you can as quick as you can. He will do all he can to work AGAINST you and WITH the DA. RUN!!!

A year ago I found my self in jail, unexpectedly. I wasn't able to afford a lawyer and the courts appointed Cierra Brown. I have never experienced anything like this, jail, or an attorney that wasn't private. If you get the opportunity to have Cierra or Kelly represent you, you're very fortunate. She is upfront and honest. And super attentive . Everything I asked for regarding my case, she made it happen. Police reports, media, and witnesses. She put up with my complaints and bouts of eniltalment, with grace. I was not easy to deal with. At all. I was feeling hopeless, and then, she wrote an email from her wedding asking the judge to dismiss my case, and Kelly Fitzpatrick read the email in court. Kelly, was so kind and super attentive. I realized that Cierra did care, she did listen, and she is everything we need in our justice system. She is irreplaceable. I learned so much from my case and impressed with the court appointed lawyer. Thank you Cierra for being so kind and tolerating me throughout that process. I'm so grateful for that experience because of you. Jerad is incredible too. Thanks Jared. Thank you all for standing by me. Saleana

I talked to Squire Bozorth twice on the phone and he was extremely rude, abrupt and completely inaccurate on the details of the case. I wanted to meet in person to go over the case which included photos that I printed, plus a video. He was doing everything he could to keep me on the phone and not meet in person. He never let me finish talking, but finally agreed to meet. I found out that I could tell him to file a motion to withdraw my case. He was obligated to do so and the judge approved it.

Squire represented me on an extremely nuanced case and completely failed to come up with any sort of strategic defense. He doesn’t listen on phone calls and his written responses are akin to that of an unintelligible community college student. He’s a lazy lawyer, constantly late and unprepared, was often reprimanded by the presiding judge for his tardiness and lack of preparedness in court. Complete waste of time and money, would have been better off seeing to things myself and wish I would have. He’s not held in high regard by his own office and can’t tell you the last time he actually won a case that went to trial. Advice? Just retire already.

This attorney claims to be an expert in child custody matters, and states on his website that mediation with the other parent is important to the child's welfare (my paraphrasing). In fact, Mr. Cross encourages contention and strife between the opposing parties, uses the children as pawns in the divorce, refers to custody issues as the "custody battle"and even suggested that the "goal"of any custody fight is to "win, thus ensuring the custodial parent will get child support". While my now ex-spouse and I are no longer friends, we are, thankfully,a united front regarding our children, and we have agreed to never disparage each other to the children, to respect each other in our individual lives, and to reassure them through our behavior that their Mother and Father are no longer married to each other through NO fault of their own, I absolutely WOULD NOT recommend Mark Cross as a family law lawyer.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
