I hired Mr. Wallin to handle a very important matter. He came highly recommended and the recommendation was correct! He has over 30 years in practice, including time as a prosecuting attorney. All the DA's and judges know him and respect him. That is just who you want reprenting you. He was thoroughly prepared, had spoken to the DA in advance and my case took all of ten minutes for the judge to follow the recommendation of the DA and find in my favor. Mr. Wallin is very personable and knowledgeable. Just what you want in an attorney!

After talking to numerous lawyers, I hired Mr. Wallin to represent my son. I am so glad that I did. He thoroughly listened to our case and understand our difficult position. He was up front and honest about the possibilities we faced. I am happy to say that his firm and Alfred G. were successful in getting 2 charges dismissed and the 3rd one reduced. I worked with Jenni the paralegal who was also very professional and kind. Both Jenni and Alfred always promptly returned emails and phone calls and helped us through this trying time. Kudos to Mr. Wallin office - I cannot thank you enough!!

My husband and I went to see Mr. Antico at his Palmdale office, we presented our case to him. We were looking to either consolidate or file bankruptcy, but after he looked at our papers, he was very honest and told us that neither would help. I am retired and my husband is unemployed, he told us basically that we would have to meet certain criteria, in either case. I am glad that he sat down with us, and explained how each process worked. Mr. Antico and his staff are very professional, and return calls promptly. I have referred him to people that I know that are having financial problems and are considering bankruptcy. I want to thank Mr. Antico and his staff for their time and patience with us.

Mr Antico gave me a free consult. After he went though all the details of my case he put my interests before his profitability and informed me BK would most likely not work for me.! I did talk to a few other lawyers and they were very careful not to make promises but sure painted a rosy picture. Mr Antico gave it to me straight. I will not hesitate to hire Antico if I need a lawyer. Good people.

Mr. Fenn took over an eviction process that was done very poorly by a local eviction service. He was able to refile with the courts in Kern county, get the eviction approved by the courts. Mr. Fenn was also able to garnish the wages of the evicted and best of all was able to get my money refunded by the eviction service. All of this was done in a very timely manner and he always kept me informed. If I'm ever in need of his services again he will be the first lawyer I contact.

Although I had retained and fully paid for a local criminal attorney that has a very good reputation to handle my case, at the last minute (literally) I chose to have Attorney Angelo Campano to handle my case and I am very glad that I did. It's not just that he won my case. He is an attorney for my family and we fully trust him. He was most diligent in inverstigating each and every lead and building a succesful defense where I would have thought not possible. He is the best and he really cares and keeps you informed ech step of the way. As a retired alarm company President and C.E.O. I personally reccomend Angelo Campano as your Attorney because he has proven to be the best and he is a pleasure to work with. Chosing anyone else would be short changing yourself. Don't do what I did, just hire him first . Get on the right start from the beginning.

Steven Derryberry in Lancaster, CA is the BEST probate attorney I have worked with EVER. He is one of those rare attorneys who listens to his clients and puts the clients’ best interests first. (In my case, even though it was potentially at his expense.) He was compassionately blunt when he needed to be and absolutely brilliant when I needed suggestions about how to handle my deceased sister’s upside-down mortgaged house in probate. Steven has an excellent relationship with the Lancaster, CA courts which is extremely important in probate. I trust him so he's also going to do my simple revocable trust so my daughter doesn’t have to go through the shenanigans I had to deal with the first attorney I hired. I recommend Steven Derryberry to anyone in regards to estate planning.

Recently, I hired Carlton Weeks law office to file eviction law sue against my tenant for none payment. The case went four days jury trial, the jury took less than 40 minutes to reach the unanimous verdict. Rikka J. Fountain is excellent attorney. She goes above and beyond to help me to win the case. She is very knowledgeable with good strategies. She spent a lot of time to gather all the details, contacted the witness I provided, and had many discussion with me about how to present the case to the jury, including opening statement, testimony, cross examination, rebuttal exam, and closing argument. She prepared me well to be on the witness stand. She was able to convince the jury that I am a very good landlord and win case 100% I could not ask more and better attorney than Rikka. I highly recommend this law firm, especially Rikka J Fountain to the landlords or property managers, the eviction needs to be filed definitely they are best choice.

This is to act as a counterpoise to the obvious smear job left by some clueless nitwit. I know Marc Herbert. He handled a rather sticky criminal matter (HS 11377, Prop 36, parole viol., long record, etc etc) for a friend of mine and was quite adept at handling the DA's office in the matter and achieved an excellent and fair disposition for the client. Whoever wrote the earlier comment was either inebriated to the point of pure fantasy, or it was rather thinly veiled prank by a disgruntled former client who may have thought that retaining counsel entitles one to a "get out of jail free" card. Mr. Herbert's qualifications and experience speak for themselves. I would highly recommend Mr. Herbert as counsel for any criminal matter.

I'll start the review by saying that if I had stayed with this lawyer all the way through to trial, I'd be a felon at best and possibly in jail. Instead I went back to the public defender and the case was dismissed. This all started when I called their office on Saturday and Wallin picked up. He used scare tactics saying I need to hire him right away so they can work on the defense. I fell for it and met up with the paralegal to give them 5K an hour later. As soon as they had my money, it was very hard to get a hold of anyone. Later I found out that they hadn't worked on my defense until weeks later. Here's a more detailed history of problems I had with them from least to worst: -Receptionist confirmed an appointment I had at 11am just 30 mins prior and I drove down, my appointments not til 12 and she says it wasn't her I talked too and closes the window on me. -The first Monday after retaining I called to ask some basic questions on what the process of going to my court date would be like, my assigned paralegal Ana was not there that day so the receptionist transferred me to another paralegal. When I asked her, she wouldn't answer my question and said I had to wait til the next day. -Another time I called when Ana was there that day and I had some questions, but the receptionist said she was on the phone and would call me back in 30 mins. I waited 4 hours til the end of business and never got a call back. -Another time I emailed some questions because calling wasn't working out, I sent it early Friday morning and never got a response, on Monday evening I called in and finally got ahold of Ana to ask if she got my email questions and she had only opened the attachment in the email, but not read my questions. -The receptionist said she was unavailable so I was transferred to someone else I never got her name, but my question was if it's standard practice at this firm for me to not have a face to face meeting with my lawyer before going to court and she wouldn't answer the question saying I could make an appointment with Alfredo. -Another time I came in to go over the police report with Ana and she wanted me to fill out the social history form, but I had already filled it out and emailed it to her more than a week ago. She had to ask if I was sure and then she checked her email and found it. -Ana emailed me someone else's discovery and when I called up to tell her, she said are you sure? -I was trying to make an appointment with Alfredo on Monday and the receptionist told me Ana was unavailable and would call me back. Tuesday never got a call so I called again and also left a voicemail with Ana and emailed both Ana and Alfredo that I wanted to make an appointment. I called on Wednesday and still hadn't gotten a call or email back and everyone was still unavailable. Thursday came around and I still didn't get ahold of anyone so I had tell the receptionist I was going to call the bar and report that I couldn't communicate with my attorney. 5 mins later I got a call from Alfredo. -Thursday call from Alfredo Excuses on how he's been too busy in courts all around LA. I told him if he were too busy then why take my money? He said if you want a lawyer that has a lot of free time that you can contact all the time, he's not going to have any cases and not be a good Lawyer. We have the most experience in the AV, you'd probably not be happy if we didn't show up to your court. I said even a 5 min call would be okay so I'm not in the dark and he said that's why I'm calling you Now. He said This is the only time he's had. At this stage, he said it didn't matter about my fiancée saying they made up things that she didn't tell the police. Because they won't have her show up, they'll use what's in the statements. The DA knows she is not pressing charges so they won't call her in, But the DA did call her in and she just didn't show up so they issued a body attatchement.

Alfred is one of the best lawyers in the Antelope Valley area. I am a lawyer myself. And when a close family member needed help, I went to Alfred. His staff was extremely professional and well organized. I have known Alfred since 1996—we were law school roommates. In school, he said he wanted to work for the district attorney. But he realized that his passion was standing up for the underdog. Once you meet Alfred, you will immediately see that he’s different—in a good way. He’s different because he is genuine. He doesn’t pretend to be somebody else. He may be quiet and reserved. But believe me, Alfred is a fierce competitor. He likes to be right. Here's my top 5 compliments. He’s (1) super honest; (2) responsible; (3) serious; (4) smart; and (5) reliable. You should especially be impressed that Alfred has only worked at one law firm for nearly 13 years. That isn't typical. It’s a tribute to his loyalty to his firm and commitment. I am proud to call Alfred my friend.

A very soft spoken trustworthy lawyer who can put any of your fears to rest. Always called back when asked even if not in the office and it was a pressing matter. Is also very knowledgeable and always speaks about similiar cases, when talking one on one, to show the comparisons between your case and others to give you a better outlook of what to expect. I did not have many questions concerning this case after awhile because I basically put all of my trust in Mr. Guevara's hands because I knew that everything would be okay. And the things he did behind the scenes, talking to DA's and others, was amazing. I definitely knew everything would be taken care of and it was.

Absolutely the worst attorney she would never answer any of my questions, nor would she call me to let me know the results of court appearances she made on my behalf. When I would meet her before a court appearance she would scream at me and put me down, making the judge wait until she was done yelling at me. DO NOT HIRE THIS WOMAN!! Claudia was so focused on making me feel horrible, had she put that energy into my case she might have had better results. When she realized that the judge didn’t like her she quit on me. Claudia should not be an attorney. I know lawyers that have worked with her and they would say she was tough they would all say the witch just flew in on her broom stick when she would show up to court. I can’t recommend her so please run the other way and do not retain her she will gladly take your money but in return won’t communicate with you on any concerns you might have.

I hired the Johnson Law Firm because they were recommended to me by a friend and their initial retainer was a $1000 less than another lawyer that I regret to this day not hiring. Hiring the Johnson Law Firm has been one of the worse decisions I have ever made in my life. My initial consultation was with experienced Robert Johnson. However, unfortunately for me, he was unscrupulous and ended up just played the role of bait to lure me in with his legal knowledge and powerful presence. He failed to be available for consequent meetings and I received a letter notifying me of his retirement less than a month after my initial meeting with him. My case was filed and handled by his very young, inexperienced partner and nephew, Tim Johnson. I was left having paid top dollar for a newbie that had a chip on his shoulder and wanted a gold star for showing up to my hearing. Among the multitude of ineptitudes of Tim Johnson was that on the day of my hearing it appeared that Mr. Johnson had not so much as read my husband’s income and expense declaration, let alone actually prepared for my case after waiting for almost a year for spousal support. He could not have done a worse job. He was deceptive in his negations and explanations of issues within an order he coaxed me to sign even though he was completely unknowledgegable in almost all aspects of my case. What’s worse, his errors set a precedence for future hearings. I am disabled and I have had almost no income for almost a year. Thanks to Tim Johnson my husband is continuing to not pay court ordered spousal support even though I have $600 monthly out-of-pocket medical expenses and he makes $250,000. Now he has even won all the proceeds from the sale of my marital home. All because of Tim Johnson. I don’t even have money for groceries. Tim and all high level staff at Johnson Law Firm are not concerned with you, your case, or your future. They are only interested in their pockets and how much they can make off you by expelling the least amount of hours and work- and don’t even think about calling them with a question or two. You might inconvenience them...

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
