The divorce process is nasty, gross, and beyond emotional. Lydia's hard work, persistence, expertise, understanding, and kindness got me through. She's is extremely detail oriented and will not miss a beat. My ex put me thru the ringer and would have gotten away w unscrupulous things if it weren't for Lydia. She worked closely w my divorce financial consultant (Jason Crowley of DCP....also a must have) and came up w the best possible outcomes. I feel like I 'won' my divorce (if there is such a thing). Thank god I had her!

I've worked with Andy in a variety of capacities from corporate legal work to civil litigation and he has in every case proven himself to be an incredibly capable attorney. I have referred a number of my clients and friends to Andy and he has always received rave reviews and extraordinarily positive feedback. I would recommend Andy without hesitation.

Mr. Holland is one of the brightest professionals that I've met in business today. Maybe I'm biased because I was referred by very good friend, however, I highly recommend him. I felt he always had my best interest in mind in all stages of my suit and in the end, what he foresaw came true to my relief. He is very knowledgeable in other areas besides Intellectual Property.

I would like to recommend Jordan Becker as a very experienced, detail oriented and ardent IP advocate. I have been a client of Jordan for almost five years. Jordan is very experienced both in advising clients on IP strategy and in obtaining patents for the client. I value his candid advice, his ability to discuss diverse points of view, and to professionally resolve the differences in opinions.

Jordan has been one of the best patent lawyers that I have worked with. He is very quick to understand the patent ideas. He does a phenomenal job on translating those ideas into claims and text describing the patent. I have hardly had to go through more than 2 reviews before submitting the application. On the personal side, he is very patient with all the engineers he has engaged. He is very considerate to our delays in responding to emails/reviews of the patent application process, which I really appreciate.

I was referred over to Daniel by another lawyer who I had working on a separate project in regards to some trademark/copywright questions I had. Daniel, was super responsive and gave me multiple different options for accomplishing what I was trying to do for minimal to no cost on my own. Super refreshing to work with a lawyer who is genuinely concerned with the best interest of the client instead of just making a buck. Will definitely use again!

I will always be thankful and appreciative of Ben Cintz. He was always responsive, sensitive, and extremely knowledgeable of the law. Ben always took the time to explain everything openly and clearly so that I knew what was going on with my case. He helped me at a time when I felt helpless because I was falsely accused of doing something and was terminated by a large company. Ben discovered written evidence that several employees as well as management deliberately planted evidence against me and lied about it to get me terminated. Because of Ben Cintz expertise, I was awarded several years of back pay with raises, along with my job back with a promotion, and a nice monetary settlement. Thank you, Benjamen Cintz!

I purchased a condo that seller did not disclose the unit is not in compliance with HOA architecture requirements. I ended up need to find an attorney to solve this issue with HOA and seller. It is a vey complex situation, and lots of lawyers I talked either has no HOA experience or do not think the damage is big enough for their time. Before I met Michael, I had hired 2 attorneys for the same issue. The first attorney was not responsive, does not have adequate real-estate law experiences and knowledge, and always delays the process. The second attorney, I found her through a reputable law company, and with more than 20 years real estate experiences. She is a lot better than the first one, but still can’t resolve the issue between seller, HOA and myself. After the 2 not so good attorneys, I was very frustrated until I met Michael. My friend recommended Michael to me, and he did help me to resolve the issue. Michael is very responsive, and he is super fast. He surprises me that he knows a lot more real estate laws by comparing him to others I used and talked. He always thinks about his clients, and he really pays attentions to details when he drafts the legal documents. I was amazed that he checks the building requirements that most lawyers could miss it before he puts the numbers on my agreements/legal documents. He has very high negations skills and always helps you to prepare the next step. By comparison, I think Michael is the attorney I have had. Not just my opinion, the HOA attorney also told me that I have an excellent attorney to represent me and put my interest on the top of his priority. I think if I don’t have Michael to be my attorney, I will not be able to get the issue settled. You may be worry about he is so expensive, but he charges reasonable hourly rate with the highest quality. Why do I know? I hired other 2 attorneys before him, and they charged not less than Michael.

Alan helped us navigate the complexities of California regulations when opening our franchise. He did very extensive and thorough research to ensure that we are protected under the law. He is always courteous and easy to talk to and tries to explain the law in layman's terms. He doesn't overwhelm you with a lot of confusing, legal terminology. He always made himself available when we needed his help. When we were up against a deadline, Alan worked weekends and on his vacation to accommodate us. We highly recommend Alan.

He and his office team were very responsive in providing us draft documents to review and provide him further clarifications on specific points. Gadi conducted the signing process in a timely manner including providing the signed documents via mail and electronic means.

When GetQuik was looking for legal representation, I asked a few friends who they would recommend. My friend Elliot had engaged Venture Law Group, who helped guide his former company Netcentives through an IPO process. The partner they worked with was Elias Blawie. Fast forward a few years, Venture Law Group is now a part of Heller Ehrman. When I first met with Elias, I immediately liked him. Elias has worked with numerous startups throughout his career. He has knowledge and experience. As well, he is a very likeable dude. Calm and easy going. GetQuik's legal needs to date have been fairly straight forward. We recently cleaned up our corporate docs, and Elias and attorney Saxon Peters were instrumental in this process. Perhaps the thing I appreciate most about Elias' approach is that he looks for ways to minimize our legal bills, rather than proposing complex solutions that will run up our tab. His philosophy is to build good will and help a startup offload their legal burden in the hopes that the company will grow into a industry leader with expanded legal concerns which he and Heller can manage. The rare combination of a nice lawyer, and one that thinks in terms of long term relationships. That is what Elias brings to the table. Those in Silicon Valley may want to consider his services for their corporate legal matters.

We have been clients of Gilfix & La Poll since 2007. Our living trust (created in 1989) needed to be updated since our family dynamic had changed considerably. Our fist meeting with Michael Gilfix was most pleasant. Our questions and concerns were addressed in a professional, competent, and "easy to understand English" manner. We left the office convinced that our affairs are in very good hands. All the people in the office are friendly, polite, and very professional. We highly recommend to consult the Gilfix & La Poll Law Firm for all your living trusts needs

I've used Rob twice. Four years ago it was simple wills and a trust. More recently, it was remarriage, combined family with a child by previous marriage and an investment property. Rob initially recommended a QTIP trust, but the more questions he asked, the more he leaned toward a different structure. His key benefit was his ability to get to what we really wanted, and to explain all the pros and cons of each approach. We're very pleased.

Throughout, Bruce had a keen understanding of our business needs and how the lease needed to be structured to support those needs. He was meticulous in attention to detail and pushed us hard when we needed to be. He's trustworthy, smart, and tough. Highly recommended.

Mrs. Burns took a loss and turned it into a 110% win. Her insight and perception of the opposition was brilliant. To her credit, she took this loosing battle on a pro bono basis and yet she gave 100% to the task of winning. I didn't feel she addressed this matter with less interest or professionalism than she would a multi-million dollar case. One can see that she is equip to win and accepts nothing less.

Although Mrs. Hadjipetrova could not finish my case (due to long absence from U.S,) she was constantly ready to help with exactly what was needed, no matter Monday or Sunday, day or night. And her calm and balanced personality it just misleading - she's 100% right into the point. Broadly knowledgeable, open-minded and naturally charismatic. The life experience and common sense are just another plus.

Ms.Demers is a lawyer with heart. She is very compassionate and empathetic. She is also ethical, loyal, honest, and above all, genuine. She is not at all pretentious nor arrogant. She treats you with respect even if you are young, or have very limited financial means. She doesn't talk down to you because you don't know the law. Rather, she gives full consideration to your concerns and needs. At the same time, she utilizes sound judgment in precluding unncesssary items in her pleadings. She doesn't give you fancy "sales talk," but speaks the truth. I believe that the judges see her as a trustworthy advocate in court. She is a rare treasure in a legal community who is not corrupted by greed. I appreciate the fact that she is true to herself and chooses to be selective with her cases. She is also very diligent in her study of law, and in some areas, she happened to know more than lawyers with many years of experience!

Deb represented my startup in business negotiations with partners and investors, and worked miracles! In setting up deals with worldwide companies, we thought we were on the ropes and she repeatedly worked out terms that fully protected our intellectual property without a negative impact to us. I once asked her about her talent, and she explained that she viewed negotiation as a way for both parties to get what they want, rather than a winner take all proposition. That, and her track record, earned a lot of respect from me. I occasionally keep in touch, and she is now at her own firm: www.djlcorplaw.com.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
