I worked with Jan to create my will and trust after my divorce. She was matter of fact and very thorough in the process. Since I have known Jan for many years I can attest to her honesty and diligence to the law, and willingness to tell someone when they are wrong. Like many, I can be biased by my own ideas. Jan has solid legal perspective and always kept my goals in mind, talking me through the facts and legal issues to make a good decision. I’m glad I worked with Jan. She covered all the angles, from how my assets were registered with my financial company to ensuring the legal language fit with the changing relationships of family members and everything else. Thanks, Jan!

Jan did an outstanding in reviewing and preparing both my parents estate plan and then my own. She prepared a Special Needs Estate Plan for my parents which was very complex and involved very sensitive and emotional family issues. She not only handled the legal aspects, but counseled us in a very personal way which enabled us to move forward and make some very necessary provisions. After having worked with Jan through the process of creating my parent's plan, I immediately contacted her after my parent's plan was complete to review my own trust and estate plan which was enacted after my husband passed away. Jan immediately spotted some issues which needed to be taken care of, and we worked together to create a new plan which protects both me and my 13 year old daughter in a much more effective way. Having worked with two other law firms in the creation of both my parent's first estate plan and my own first trust and estate plan, the difference with Jan is MORE than apparent. She brings a personal approach to estate law that is sadly missing from other firms. She takes the time to truly get to know her clients and create a personal relationship with them. She isn't just the attorney that created my trust - she is part of my support system and I know I can reach out at any time with questions. I could not have been more pleased with Jan. She is the BEST of the best. I wholeheartedly recommend her!!!!!

During this past year, Jan has been a tremendous help to me. After the death of my husband in January, I appreciated that she not only had the knowledge and experience necessary to handle the estate, but also was someone I could trust to keep my best interests in mind. I did not know Jan before entering into this business relationship with her, and I feel fortunate to have found her.

I saw Mr. Bronisky about a real estate breach of contract case as a defendant. At the time, I knew very little about the law. I was sure the legal system would protect me from what I believed was a frivolous case. Further, Charlie told me I had the law on my side. After several months of motions, legal research, and bills, I felt sick to my stomach. Each argument we presented was defeated by the plaintiff, and I realized that the lawsuit did in fact have merit. When it came to ask Charlie whether I should settle, he said only I can make that decision. Yet, he seemed so convinced I would win just months earlier and the facts didn't seem any different. I feel that my lawyer misled me about the strength of my case. Had he told me the truth, I would have settled right away. Instead, I spent a lot of money to do the same thing in the end- settle.

Mr. Bronitsky is an excellent attorney. If you need to pursue legal action, he's definitely the guy you want on your side. But what I like about him the most, is he will tell you when NOT to pursue legal action because your case is not strong enough or not worth the cost. His honesty is not often seen in the legal profession. From the moment you hire him, he will be your advocate and your protector. I wouldn't trade him for anyone.

Disappointing experience. Rude and unprofessional. Asked a series of personal questions that were completely unnecessary and irrelevant, cut me off, inquired as to whether I was "solvent" as "all kinds of people call..." and within seconds hung up. I suggest hiring an admin or charging a consultation fee (which would have been perfectly fine). Very weird interaction.

Yana Albrecht is an excellent immigration attorney, she helped me to extend non-immigration status. Yana and Patricia were always available to answer my emails, which is very important especially when you have short deadlines to prepare all of the documents. As a result, my petition was approved within just 1 week after submission. I truly recommend Yana and her team to everyone who wants to have one of the best Immigration Lawyer in the USA.

attorney did minimal for money. she did not even present an argument with DMV or even ATTEMPT to win the case! I could have represented myself better without her. The measly $500 I saved by hiring her instead of another attorney has and will haunt me for a total of 10 years with astronomical fees to be paid for insurance as well as having a record with the DMV. Please DO NOT hire this lawyer!

Hi, I had a similar experience with Paul Heller. He was very unprofessional to me and my family. When I went to meet with him at his office, he was often unable to answer my questions and would never give a straight answer. I was getting the feeling he really didn't have any idea what he was talking about. When talking with the paralegals on the phone, they appear to know more about immigration than he does. We got hit with all these extra fees also. For random copying or mailing or documents. We had originally thought all of these were covered in the original retainer fee, but he just keep asking us for more money. I would NEVER recommend him to any one else. Stay away, he is not an honest laywer.

Paul Heller is an incompetent lawyer, who is often rude and racist to his clients. He worked on my H1-B case and it was the worst experience in my life. He never returned phone calls. And when I did talk to him, he was always blowing me off and refusing to give status updates. He constantly increased my fees for every little thing, and since he was working on my case and I had already paid him money, I felt I had no choice but to just pay his additional fees. I felt totally taken advantage off. Also, I looked him up on the California Bar website. He totally has lied about where he went to law school. The California Bar site says he graduated from California Western School of Law in San Diego. This is NOT the same as Hastings College of Law in SF as he claim his profile. This seems unethical to me. You can see for yourself by searching for him in the California Bar site. I would never recommend him to anyone. Please stay away from this lawyer.

At a scheduled review conference a week prior to my hearing, she blindsided me by shoving a substitute of counsel form in front of me to sign. There was no warning and she had listed me as pro pers, which at time did not understand. I was slightly behind on payment and had always paid in good faith. I didn’t sign it and found someone else on my own to get up to speed in less than a week. She then tried to bill me for that meeting. This wasted more resources and time. During an already stressful time in divorce process, I was shocked a junior divorce attorney would do this without any acrimony between us. It was clear she didn’t want to take on my contentious divorce case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
