Mr. Shuman was nice, affordable, and knowledgeable. When we discussed what needed to be done to obtain custody of my daughter (I'm her father) he basically said it would be cheaper if we got my ex to sign the paperwork ourselves. Which was fine, I got them signed, then I didn't hear from Mr. Shuman for weeks. We finally got a call and he said court in two days. TWO DAYS. Thank God I was able to take the morning off work with so little notice. Then he was late showing up for court, he talked to the judge for me, the judge asked me few questions, signed the papers and we left. It's been 3 months and I still haven't received my new custody papers. I've called the office multiple times, left messages with the secretary. Mr. Shuman was a decent attorney, did his job, but his communication skills are a zero. Because of this one problem, I will never use him again.

To start, I hope you never need the service of an Attorney, but if you do, I strongly recommend Mr. Shuman. Years a go, I open a simple child support case at the attorney general office, and when my ex turn that small case into a Custody Case, the Att. Gen. Office step back and told me that I need to get a private attorney other wise I will most likely lose my 4 year old little girl at the hands of a fhater that many times verbally express his negative feeling toward her. Living day by day, single mother, and no money, I Desperately begin to call every attorney that I could find on the ph. Book, and every single one had the same answer for me..."no $$, no case"..... "$200-$300" was the average per hr,.... "We need $2000 to start"..... And when I begin to lose my hope, Mr Shuman call, and I answer that phone so aggravated for the situation, and his answer was kind, and he begin to talk of the options I have... He was the only attorney from that ph. Book That offer me help, and more than that..."hope". He was knowledgeable, experienced, profecional, trusted, and patient , but also, so kind and compassionate. He reprecent me and my daughter for a total of 3 years (due to the extension requested by my ex and his attorney ). 3 years !.... And Mr Shuman show always all those qualities. I own him the happiness of seen my daughter grow up by my side, and also a very good support check for my daughter. My story happens 13 years a go, and until this day I still thinking that God put Mr Shuman is my path, and I'm so thankful for that. Thank You Mr. Shuman.

He seems nice at first. If he tells you to do anything that isn’t exactly in line with the courts, don’t listen to him! He got my ex thrown in jail for 60 days!! He dropped a lot of the fees, but give me a break! I said he should have his license removed, but my ex still got his case dismissed so whatever.

Used in two times in last three years .He got charges dropped both times .First charge was a DWI .Second was a more serious matter which involved a trumped up charge of child abuse . He is a down to earth kind of guy and stayed involved .

I have been employed all my life since I was out of High School. I have graduated from UH. I never been court before at all so I am the first one to admit my experience in this field is very limited. Understand the laws and I follow them. I suppose it was my fault I let this be known to her right off the bat. My case was not a divorce but a simple child support enforcement/ modification to visitation orders. Her words were No worries I'll see you through this advise all the way beginning to end I've been doing this for years...etc All you have to do is provide me with docs, info, and let me do the rest no need to checkup or worry I'll call you/ email. Worry free limited invested time on my part once I provide with all items bang for the buck. I had already researched a bit in advance had all ready those first 2 days of service. I was a fool. At the end after a year with 3500 of advance she was late unprepared on the 1st court day dressed very casual. I felt uncomfortable bc she did not have her documents with gave excuses. She let go of one of her employees etc. 2nd court casual hand written draft to sign late again. At this point I was calling emailing no response wanted to understand and be advised on what the law expected out of me. No answers no tips no important info to have on hand in the future. Nothing before, after, and during communication provided, I did get charged however for every call, letter, email I had made during the last of last of it. At least they read them. Case is closed had a large bill paid but not forgoten. I am not a professional in this field but professionalism is important no matter where you work. I got more help from the D.A. Office and blogs then her for before and after the case. I held off getting her off the case bc she said it would be worth it. I am glad the D.A has info I need and its free. I suggest mediation/gov. Lawyer before get stuck in the rain with no rainbow in sight.

She charged me monthly legal fees, and had me collecting documents for a year, but did nothing to resolve my divorce. She didn't explain why it was taking so long, and became hostile when I complained about the continued delay. She made several threats to withdraw from my case just days before a scheduled hearing. She had my file 10 months, and was not prepared for the final hearing. Took no initiative to resolve my divorce. Allowed opposing counsel to control the direction of the entire case. With months of doing nothing to finalize my divorce, she caused me to lose a lot of resources with no results. She is neither competent or capable and shows no compassion or integrity.

Ms Bushman holds a law degree and has many years of experience, There is no doubt that when she applied herself she can win for her client. Unfortunately my case seemed to fall through the cracks in her work load. She was very difficult to get a hold of. When Inwould call more often than not I had to speak with one of her assistants who were.not able to help other than taking a message. I appreciate being spread too thin and having too many comittmentd, however I would ask if that's the case are you really serving your clients properly? Ms Bushman at times was very reactive and failed to control her emotions when speaking to me, her paying client. At times she threatened me with withdrawing her services knowing we had important court dates coming up. At times I questioned her commitment to my case given her volunteer work at Food Bank sermed to take priority over returning my calls. She seemed to give up and essentially buckle under the view points of opposing counsel. Essentially sfe talked me in to agreebig to terms that have traumatized my child all in favor of opposing counsel. I agreed to the terms proposed with the hope of allowing the acrimony to settle, this was a huge mistake. As time has passed the opposition haa only become more emboldened and less open to coparenting with me than before. Ms Bushman's relationships with other attorneys seen to hold very little influence exhibited by their reluctance to be open to negotiating wit the terms she would provide in mediation. She ensured that I was always paid up in full so there was no question about her commitment to get paid. I understand she's running a business but bottom line Ms Bushman failed to deliver results on her committmenf to me and my child when we came to her for help. Please be certain to have an easy case because unfortunately Ms Bushman just did not seem to want to engage and fight for her client despite having hard physical evidence of abuse stated by the child regarding the opposition.

I wished they're were zero stars, We hired them for my husband green card renewal, worse customer service, every time we called for an update about our case, they were just plain rude and wouldn't answer are questions. they would transferred my phone call to this guy so rude. never again Desearía que fueran cero estrellas, los contratamos para la renovación de la tarjeta verde de mi esposo, peor servicio al cliente, cada vez que llamábamos para una actualización sobre nuestro caso, eran simplemente groseros y no respondían nuestras preguntas. transferirían mi llamada telefónica a este tipo tan grosero. nunca más

As my review states this attorney is a very smart attorney, but he is very lazy and really unorganized he will lose your evidence because he has no secretary. he will never return your calls until the day before court then he will submit a bill to you that reflects all of this work that he has been doing but it is a lie because he just starts blowing your phone up the night before your court date. he will take all your money and give you no receipts until you ask 100 times then he will throw one together that will eat all of your retainer and reflect that you owe him a couple grand more.....then he will hound you until you pay him then you will not here from him again until the night before court again he is always unprepaired !

Hired this guy several years ago .. I recently found out the work he did for me wasn’t worth the paper it was written on. I reached out to him about the problem . I told him he should fix this screw up free of charge ..He focused on the free of charge. I never heard back from him.. I felt like since he didn’t do it right it the first place and I paid him back then that he should fix it free of charge .. I hired a new lawyer that knew what he was doing and he was able to fix the mess this guy left me with.. If you hire him just be warned his screw ups might come back to bite you in the butt later on …He never even apologized !!!!

Referred to this lawyer by a friend as he was highly recommended. A nice person in all but not sure of his attorney skills. The result was that after a year in and out of court, and several thousand dollars later the case remained as when we started. Had to constantly refresh the attorney of case details, provide tons of paperwork which I got the impression were never thoroughly gone through otherwise would not have to remind of case issue and details. Office staff was very good about collecting money or would threathen to withdrawl just before hearing date. At court the attorney would appear confused and uniformed over case points, and lacked negotiations skills to contend with opossing lawyer. Attorney seemed unprepared and evetually lack the luster as he tried cases that were not his main practice. Did not provide itmemized service statement for services only a call that our bill was due payment.

This man will over sell himself as family lawyer, string you along not file any papers, miss the court date and then demand another payment. All to just ignore you after the case gets dismissed because of his negligence. In the hole 6500 dollars because this man lacks ethics and integrity.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
