Attorney Nugent did much more than I could have ever expected. He came to my house a number of times to make it convenient for me so that I did not have to travel into Boston and returned all my telephone calls and addressed all my questions and concerns promptly and professionaly. I was very very satisfied.

Absolutely horrid to deal with. Will NOT return a phone call or an email. I would recommend him to no one because he is the most unprofessional attorney I have ever dealt with.

Attorney Delaney was terrific throughout my two year ugly divorce! It's unreal to me how anybody would say otherwise. He seems to knows everyone at the Family probate court and everyone seems to know him. I would not hesitate to refer him and have. Each person I have referred has come back to me with the highest compliments and thanks!

I would never refer this man to anyone including my worst enemy. I have been calling him for months and he still hasn't given me my divorce paperwork and it has been almost a year. My money was wasted on this man. He did absolutely nothing that he promised he would. He couldn't even get me alimony.

1. Lazy While other lawyers have assistants and do all the legwork, Attorney Schwartz makes you get all medical reports snd necessary documents. 2. Disorganized I had my insurance company send medical records. His office signed for them and then he lost them. 3. Unprepared The day before we were supposed to go to trial ge contacts me first paperwork “extremely important to winning case”. He did not prepare in advance and forgot to tell me that I needed a doctor’s note about my disability. 4. Refused to do job My disability checks weren’t coming. He told me to deal with the insurance company myself even though he had already told me not to contact them- he would be the contact for all matters. 5. Don’t sign He pressures you to sign on your first visit. Then you find out other lawyers do the work, but you can’t get out if the deal. Even when you fire him, get gets 10% of any settlement by law. Do your your homework and get a lawyer in a firm with office support, strong work ethic and organization.

I am filing a report with Mass Bar due to Richard’s poor performance. Recently, I did not receive my Workman comp check. Richard told me to deal with it myself even though I am not supposed to have contact with the insurer. He makes you get all medical records while others attorneys have secretaries that do this for you. He lost papers several times including documents that his office signed for upon delivery. He was unprepared for court- gave my wrong age, inaccurate information and didn’t present critical information resulting in me getting only partial benefits. He had my case back to back with another case - which he also lost- so he only had to drive to Boston once. He shared confidential information with opposing counsel ( I had gone on a cruise for my father’s 90th birthday) which was then used against me in court. He forgot to file 2 claims together so we needed to postpone the first hearing by months leaving me with no income from the job. The judge told him in September to join a claim for a fractured wrist- it is now August of the following year and has not been done. Definitely do not use this attorney.

He handled my worker's compensation case quite a few years ago. I found him to be very efficient, and a respectful gentleman. I worked for the Government and never knew there was a pension disability I was entitled to. If it weren't for him I don't know where I would be now. I was so content with my settlement. I would and have recommended him to a lot of people.

I was referred to James by my real estate attorney for a construction litigation matter, and I had hoped that perhaps the one-star reviews I saw here and on Avvo were anomalies. Unfortunately, they are a direct reflection of how James conducts business. He is rude, sloppy, and unprofessional. He rushed me off the phone the first time I spoke to him, sent me several emails and a contract that were laden with typos/errors, and then took an entire week to even confirm with me when I'd see a draft of the deliverable I retained him for. It was bad enough it took one entire week to establish a course of action, and it's worse that almost another week went by after I formally retained his services and I still had no timeline for when I'd see the deliverable, or when it could be served. While I'm angry about the lost time, I'm thankful that I don't have someone who behaves like James representing me. Do yourself a favor and find another attorney who is capable of establishing a better rapport with their clients.

He charges too much of a fee and he very unprofessional. He seems to like to cause controversy with gossiping instead of doing his job that he is overcharging for. I would never recommend him. One of my so called relatives hired him. One conversation with him and it would have been an absolute no.

This guy took my money and did nothing to help me. I asked the ABA in Boston for help and review of his service/charges. They granted a hearing and as a result reduced the fee amount that he said I owed him by one half. I would highly advise staying away from this attorney.

I am writing to warn everyone to stay clear of this attorney, as he commits outright fraud, and I am about to lose my house over it. Mr. Provanzano prays on people in trouble and especially the Elderly, takes their money, and leaves them worse off than they were when they walk in to ask for his help. He Charged us $50,000, did not do discovery, and now we are going to trial, without being allowed to present evidence, or any witnesses, in a fraud case, we lost 1.3 million dollars. This guy even went to hearings after he quit, to make sure, we were not able to present a case in any fashion. DO NOT HIRE THIS ATTORNEY, OR YOU MAY LOSE EVERYTHING AS WE DID.

I consulted with him re: my landlord's refusal to reimburse my hotel costs and the many delays in restoring my apartment after a fire. He told me to tell landlord I would pay for repairs and seek reimbursement (in court if necessary), giving him 24 hour notice to arrange for repairs himself. I asked the Dept. of Public Health to inspect the apartment and received a notice that stated, according to “general laws, chapter 111, section 127, [sometimes you can] use your rent money to make the repairs yourself. If the Framingham Board of Health....certifies that there are code violations which endager or materially impair your health, safety...and your landlord has received written notice of the violations, you may be able to use this remedy..." If the owner does not begin repairs within 5 days or complete them within 14 days, you can use up to 4 month's rent to pay for them yourself. There is no law that allows 24 hour notice and the issue is much more complex than he indicated. I told Joe about this info. and received no response. Thank God, I didn’t spent thousands of my own money. He sounded 100% confident that I would get reimbursed.

To represent us settling parents' estate, Beverley was hired by family member (personal friend of Beverley's) who with myself was legally appointed co-executor of parents' estate. Beverley, who I'd never met 'til she called to inform me she'd been hired to handle the estate did not (f/over 3 yrs.) return my calls, respond to my correspondence, keep me informed on estate's status or represent my legal interests/share of the estate. Copies of letters she gave to me and said she'd sent to parents' financial institutions were determined by the financial insitutions to be fake. One institution was so appalled by Beverley's blatently fake letter that they vigorously urged me to immediately hire my own attorney to investigate and prosecute Beverley for those fake letters. I did not have assets to do that. Beverley allowed other family member to bar me from parents' home by changing locks. Despite my repeated requests f/key to enter parents' home, Beverley refused - f/over 1 yr. - til day before keys to parents' house were given to new owners. By that time 99% of contents had been removed. I basically received 2 paintings I'd given my parents. Despite my request to have my parents car sold, Beverley allowed other family member to take car to her home and let it sit in her driveway for over a year. By time Beverley addressed vehicle, it had rotted, beome total loss and estate had to pay to have it taken away and trashed. Parent's had very successful business. Their accountant personally told me their estate was 2-3 million dollars. Basically I received only 1/2 of their home - period. Beverley actively and intentionally denied me access to all other monies and gave other family member bulk of the estate. It is sad to say, but her attitudes, actions and behaviors were blatently criminal.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
