I needed an attorney to help me when my husband passed away. Ms. Gallo, listened intently and took control of my case which was a very complex family situation. She went above and beyond to help keep peace, and was available. I appreciated her strong ethics, yet she was not intimidated to stand up to the other attorney, and was well prepared with facts, not just talk. I will definitely call on her again.

Meghan did a great job helping me through my legal situation. Her advice was good, and she talked me through my options for the most favorable outcome for me. She handled my case promptly and she was easy to get a hold of when I had questions. I could not be happier with the service she provided.

She was suppose to represent me in my disability case and I didnt feel like she could get the job done if she didnt believe in me. And she just blew me off one to many times. And insinuated to me that I was faking! I didnt appreciate this attitude at all. I have enough problems without having an attorney that treats me badly.

I went to Ben Crabtree for help with an adoption case. He seemed fine until after I paid his retainer. my case was not a big money case as most of the work had already been done. After he received the retainer, he was very short when I tried to ask questions. He even criticized me for asking too many questions telling me that my case was not priority to him. I stopped trying to keep up with what was going on. He then reached a tentative agreement with the opposing lawyer. he called me asking me to agree to their terms without me even seeing anything in writing. . When I did not agree to the terms, he literally said this has been going on for some time now and I don't understand what the problem is. If he had been paying attention, he would have understood. I explained to him what had to be in the agreement for me. He called back and told me the other side agreed and I accepted. After, He did not send me a statement or anything regarding money. I knew I should get much of my retainer back because we did not go to court. I have called twice asking for a statement and a refund of unused retainer. The last time I called he said he would get it to me that week and that has been over 3 weeks ago. I felt uncomfortable with him from the start.

I used Ben for 2 different cases I had and I was 100% satisfied with his representation. He was always available to answer any questions I had and he filed everything within a timely manner and handled everything professionally, If I ever need representation again I will most definitely be using this law firm & John Benjamin Crabtree!

I had a minor ticket that almost turned into something major. But luckily I contacted Ben, and after a few days, several phone calls and at least two interviews he had negotiated a settlement that I could live with, and in the long run ended up being a blessing in disguise. I am grateful and would, and have kept Mr. Crabtree on retention.

Not only was he the worst attorney we have ever contacted, but he was clueless to our situation or the legal ramifications. He did not research the history or legalities of our suit. He proclaimed he was knowledable and had encountered the same issues, but he lied. He did not know anything about the legalities of our situation and kept communications with the other side from us. All he wanted to do was settle. Don't bother contacting him - he is not interested in solving the problem, just getting paid. We wasted over $6K on this man. We had to request a new attorney to continue our suit, which we are how winning - no help to this man and we lost our $6K in attorney fees for nothing.

I've known Ron for many years, having worked with him previously when he was a Corporate lawyer and I was a liaison between our Legal and Operations Divisions. Having known him both professionally and personally, he's maintained his integrity and dependability over all those years, never deviating from being truthful with everyone. I can't say that about many attorneys I've ever met.

Johnnie talks a strong game until the retainer is secured. And then her negative antics and behavior took over. Her communication is horrible, and she talks to her clients like they are scolded children. She did not act in my best interest as a client and when challanged on her poor performance simply sided with the opponent and withdrew. If your looking for an attoney that acts in your interest keep going down the list.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
