If you are looking for someone to represent you in a criminal matter this is a great lawyer to look at. He offers reasonable rates and can get you a fair deal. If you have civil dealings this would not be a good choice. He basically dropped the ball on this one. He has represented me in a DWI, a Divorce, a Custody case, and a Child Supoprt case. The first case he represented me on was in 2004, and the most recent ended this past month.

Did the consultation $300..met again to see if she could possibly pursue my case thru litigation.. Didn't have the audacity to call me and tell me she didn't have time to take on my case.. Had her Paralegal call and leave me a voicemail that Mrs. Setzer is too busy.. I left multiple voice mails and emails.. No responses.. Just another reason the USA 🇺🇸 legal system is a joke.. Thanks for nothing!

Very professional and kind-hearted. Was genuinely happy for me when my case turned out excellently. Attorney's humbleness and wisdom ability to refrain from selfishness will exceed your expectations. Mr. Basinger and his attorney both are breathes of fresh air to knowing this office exists.

Paralegal is very unprofessional, unorganized, & rude. I was calling for a couple of hours trying to get ahold of someone in the office. As soon as I hung up she called back asking for an entirely different name then got aggravated because I told her who I was and what I was needing she in them got an attitude.

Thank you Matt for your services. I had a bad day and got arrested for a couple misdemeanor charges. Hired one lawyer and was givine what I considered a harsh punishment wich included jail. I appealed the decision. With only 2 days before my court date I spun the wheel with Mr. Barton. He seemed like a genuine person and I had a good feeling so I retained his services. To make a long story short he did 5 times better than my previous attorney (aaron lee) and he got me an outcome I was more than happy with. From my family and I we wanted to say thank you Matt. Hopefully I wont ever need your services again, but its nice to know that if I do I can trust you.

We were traveling down I-85 returning to SC from NC. My son in law was driving and was stopped for speeding. 86 in a 65. We learned the weekend before the trial date that violations over 16 mph called for license suspension so in a last minute panic we found Mr. Barton online and emailed on Sunday afternoon before the Monday trial date. His office responded early Monday morning and was able to handle the case. My son in law did have to pay a fine (which we expected) but he did not have his license suspended and we did not have to travel back to NC for the trial. We couldn't have asked for a better experience.

Matthew Barton was my attorney for a significant speeding ticket that I received in Rowan County. He said it would not be a problem and he would be able to plead me out. Instead, I was convicted of the speeding and, as a result paid a hefty fine. It would have been fine if he just hadn't told me up front that he could help me when he couldn't.

Mr. Graham is expert negotiator. The settlement is evident of that. Finer things were a blur at times. I was frustrated with Mr. Graham. I am certain he was with me. It is at times I felt he thought I was irrelevant. I hope my experience was the exception and not the norm. My father was a client. Our frustration was a common thread.

We scheduled a consultation with her regarding a custody situation. We were shocked in doing research beforehand that she had no website or email. Nonetheless we made the appt based on a referral. My fiance was unable to make it in time so I tried calling the number I had for her and that her paralegal left on my voicemail hours before the apt to ask if it was still okay if I came to the apt without him and to ask a few questions. Not only was I unable to reach anyone on 2 numbers over 3 hours and 10 calls but there is not even a voicemail set up to leave a message. Then spent 30 mins looking for another way to contact her with no luck as there is no posted website or email. We finally gave up. A few mins after our scheduled apt she contacted us and we answered and explained what had happened and that we tried getting ahold of her with no success. She did not respond to that and asked if we'd be rescheduling. We said possibly but just had a quick question, she immediately responded and stated "I'm not answering any questions for you unless you're coming in for an appointment." Wow I'm glad we didn't pay $150 for an hour consultation. Not only were we disappointed in the rudeness but I would not be comfortable with having an attorney that was that difficult to even leave a voicemail for yet charges those prices and doesn't have a profile online, website, other contact info, etc. Glad we didn't waste our money. I wouldn't recommend from our experience or lack thereof.

I do not recommend this attorney. She will not fight for you. But will be more than glad to take your money. She won't show up in court. But will make it seem as if she's doing everything in the world to win your case. Very unprofessional. She doesnt listen to you when you talk and ignores anything you try to recommend her include into your case. This is just a heads up. Save your time and money. Hire a real lawyer who cares. Im kicking myself right now. I should've done more research. And i still dont have my son She was never available. Missed court dates. Told me that i wouldnt have been able to handle anything without her. She told me she charged 150 per hour. I gave her the card number over the phone. Without signing any contract. She wqs supppse to take money out as it was earned. 2500 to be exact. And she took out way more than she was suppose to. The NC Bar Association states that money paid to the lawyer shall remain in the firms account until it is considered earned. She didn't seem to care. And the worst part is. She thinks she has done a good job on my case. All she did was rush through it. And now my son is still living with his mother and her abusive girlfriend. Even with the DSS testimony. My sons testimony. And pictures of his wounds that she didn't care to even look into. She said none of that mattered. I bet it would matter if it were one of her kids or family members that were being abused by someone in her family. ALL SHE WANTS IS THE MONEY. AND A QUICK RESOLUTION. It doesnt matter if its the resolution you want or not. Warning: Stay far away from this attorney.

Mr. Sandison never answered any phone calls, constantly fell short of the communication I would expect from him to my family, and got me a god awful plea deal (plead guilty to all 3 felonies I was charged with in Rowan County, even though it was my first adult criminal offense, and I was very young at the time of the offense. On top of all this, the state had little to no evidence. Despite this fact, he told me it would probably be in my best interest to take the plea deal because they would have a good chance of conviction at trial. At the end of all this, I was charged over $500 when he claimed he worked over 9 hours. On the other hand, I had lawyers in Pender and Onslow counties that did answer phone calls, were in constant contact with my family, and got much better plea deals, yet somehow I got charged much less and they claimed to have worked less hours. Overall, Mr Sandison seems to me like someone just interested in money, I personally beleive that he didn't care what happened to me, as long as he's getting paid. When looking him up on this website, I was very surprised to see him get this high of a rating.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
