Horrible lawyer, not professional in the slightest, didn’t attempt to fight for me in court despite paying double what I normally would have for a lawyer. Did not meet with me once to discuss the case or what was going to happen in court, then proceeds to show up to court 20 minutes late.

Started a request for John and team to pursue collection from a customer back in 11/2021. Apparently John gave our case to another team member, Justin Harris, to handle. After NUMEROUS requests for updates, finally the owner of our company thought it best to pursue another atty to handle. John apologized but it would have been nice to have had professional dialogue if they truly didn't want to handle our request and to have a year go by with absolutley no resolve. Maybe they just have too much work or collecting $31,000 wasn't a priority. Owner has used him in past, I would say vet before using.

In March of 2000, Guardianship for my daughter was granted. Atty. VanTine was my attorney. It became a very complicated legal process and it was one of the most stressful times in my life. It is now 20 years later and thinking I need some legal advice and help. So hoping her office is same address I decided to Google her name, and here l see the review page. After reading the reviews that were so negative, I have to add my experience. Linda is the most conscientious, reliable and dedicated attorney you will ever find. I hope anyone in need of an attorney will not be swayed by some of the derogatory comments. Linda will work with you, for you and will always go the extra mile to help you. Besides being highly regarded in the community, she is a truly a nice person.

I called upon Ms. Van Tine when my brother passed away as she had handled his will and guardianship for my disabled nephew. I found her to be knowledgeable, helpful, professional, and very prompt when returning phone calls and gathering knowledge for me. I live out of state so I do not have her as my personal attorney. However, I will retain her in all matters whenever possible.

Paulette is not only a very knowledgable attorney, but a very ethical one as well. She stopped my ex-spouse from winning full custody in a post divorce decree case. Paulette was able to expose the lies and fabrications being used against me by my former spouse and her attorney. Paulette fought hard for over a year on this case, without fail. She is smart, tough, yet fair. I would recommend her to anyone, especially if they are involved in a custody battle. She always seemed to put my children first and genuinely care about them.

This lawyer and prior Lorain County judge in domestic court has no problem lying in court, to clients, and to opposing attorneys and using her prior connections to get what she wants, which is not always best for her clients. She drags her feet on important filings and continuously threatens opposing parties with having to pay her client's attorney fees if they do not respond the way she wants them to. I would have been better off doing the work myself and am embarassed that I ever hired her. Do not hire Paulette Lilly.

She will tell you the right things at your consultation and get you to hire her. But once you do there is absolutely no effort what so ever put in by Gina to do anything. You truly would be better off just fighting your case yourself. I've had several of lawyers in my lifetime and Gina gets the award of worst lawyer ever.

If you require an attorney who doesn’t care about you or the outcome of your case, Gina is the attorney for you!! How she was voted ‘Best Attorney in Sandusky’ 3 years in a row is beyond me. She is clearly only in it for the paycheck. I filed for divorce in May of 2023 and am still waiting for it to get finalized. I waited around all summer for her to do something and the only things that were accomplished were 2 temporary orders. And those were only established because of my ex’s attorney so he could get visitation or more time with our children. Gina couldn’t even get a temporary child support order established for me. She let my ex’s attorney (who had only been an attorney for 6 months at the time) walk all over her. We never even had a 4-way meeting to try to settle everything. What a joke! Before our second temporary order was established, I made it very clear to Gina that I would never agree to give my ex every weekend during the school year (which is what he was asking for), as that is the only quality time my family and I get with my children. I don’t even think that she relayed that to the magistrate because the order that he proposed was completely asinine and I ended up having to give up part of my weekends to my ex. I was never in the room when she spoke to the magistrate and my ex’s attorney, so I just had to blindly trust that she was advocating for me the way I needed her to, but something about her just made me feel very uneasy and I always had this horrible gut feeling that she wasn’t really fighting for me. Her communication is subpar as well. I would send email after email and they would all go unanswered for weeks. I would call her office after not hearing from her for weeks on end, only to get attitude from her assistant. I also made it very clear to Gina that this entire process and her communication was very unnerving for me, yet she did nothing but tell me what I wanted to hear with no follow-through. I finally decided to hire a new attorney at the beginning of December 2023, which most can imagine how frustrating that is since I had to pay another retainer, but it was necessary. After hiring this new attorney, I decided to look at Gina’s reviews online and that’s when I realized there were several others that had the same experience with Gina, and also decided to get rid of her and hire a new attorney halfway through their case. Do not hire her. She does not care about anybody but herself. She will drag out the entire process for you and drain you financially. She should be disbarred!!

Highly do NOT recommend Gina for any services. She did not have the time to dedicate to my case and I’m sure many others as I have started to hear this is common with her. Many emails and phone calls would go unreturned. When we did speak about my case it was as if she had zero knowledge of the details we previously spoke about. Her turn around time on documents is unacceptable as it would take her weeks to over a month to send documents to me for approval. She is not honest about her timeline with paperwork. She wants to make it sound like her/her staff will start working on your paperwork right away and you’ll have paperwork in a couple weeks, clearly not the case. I ended up firing her and retaining another attorney. Save your time and money.

Hired this lawyer before. Messages never got returned even when they said they would, stack of phone riminders on messy desk, very unorganized office, paralegal lady there thinks she is hot stuff. Needed legal help and still no answer from them even after 3 weeks. Have to answer summons for myself even after paying this dude. Go elsewhere, dont do business here. Grade F

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
