Steve Teller represented me on a case that we closed just today. While I don't know him well (yet), I am extremely impressed with both his persona and practice. He went out of his way to be extraordinarily respectful of some of my differences, and genuinely fought hard for me. Our opponent on the case was a massive corporation that had first wronged me, then tried to deny their wrongdoing, and finally they brought terrifying and unscrupulous lawyers to their side of the table to muddy the waters with counteraccusations and vile lies. But unlike 90% of attorneys out there, I believe Steve truly cares about the Little Guy and he really went to bat for me on a case that I thought was hopeless at times- fighting against a dug-in Goliath with limitless resources. But Steve never quit advocating for me, and in the end we eked out a modest victory. Even though we achieved merely a moderate settlement that was not necessarily lifechanging money, I couldn't have felt more happy and vindicated (and plan to put that couple thousand G's to good use). While I can't speak for how every case goes, or to the ultimate depths and breadths of his legal acumen, this case here did Steve Teller Law some serious credit... And I can't thank you enough, Steve.

Stephen Teller has literally saved me $80,000. I have had to consult with him on two separate occasions throughout the past 20 years, and armed with his direction and advice, I was able to come out of two different situations with the resolution that I desired, and my bonus in-hand. I highly recommend him and his staff, and could not be happier with the dealings that I've had with his firm.

Waited for over a week for someone to get back to me, had to call several times and left messages, I used them about a year ago and things went very well. Not anymore. They couldn't find any records of my case, not helpful at all. Not sure what happened with them but I waisted a week for nothing, now looking for a different law firm.

We have referred numerous clients to Nelson Boyd over the years. They are prompt, courteous, empathic, and battle to the end for their clients. Its no surprise that they have won multiple industry acknowledgements. I highly recommend them as they truly care for their clients’ interest first.

Deborah Nelson and this firm receive my highest praise and recommendation. Their dedication and attention to detail went above and beyond expectation. I could not have endured dealing with my insurance carrier (after a car wreck caused by an uninsured motorist) without them. I am grateful I had their representation and support throughout this endeavor.

Nelson Boyd Attorneys represented me in a bicycle crash and did an excellent job. They are a caring, professional team, where I got the benefit of them both working on my case together. Each brought their individual strengths to my representation. As much as a legal intervention is an inherently stressful undertaking, Nelson Boyd made the experience as low-stress as possible. They did this by being good listeners, providing assurances that they were fighting for me, providing prompt and excellent communications, and always doing what they said they would do. My suit was settled satisfactorily (they worked on contingency) prior to reaching court, which was preferable since it took nearly two years to get to that point-- though not due to any fault of Nelson Boyd. Going to court would likely have taken another six months or longer. My case involved personal injury and I would highly recommend this team to anyone needing this sort of representation -- and probably other issues, as well. At minimum, it will be worth your while to call them to discuss your problem.

I have been Gary's client for less than a year and I am not exaggerating when I say Gary has been a Godsend. My business was unexpectedly caught between a rock and a hard place with not one but two of our biggest project clients at the same time, with one of them potentially cutting my company's revenues we depended on for staying afloat and potentially canceling the project, and the other trying to renege on a big final annual payment we were expecting. Compared to other lawyers who were suggesting "going on full battle mode" upfront, which would have very likely incurred significant ongoing costs and little success against these large companies all while also costing us our established relationships, Gary's seasoned, diplomatic soft-approach (while showing a hint of a stick) tactic helped us get what we wanted in both cases without ever letting things get ugly or out of control, in a relatively quick and easy manner. At the end of the day we made the most minimal of concessions, and walked away winners in both cases, all thanks to Gary's experience, guidance and patient handholding throughout. I would recommend Gary wholeheartedly to all fellow small business owners. I could not have have done this alone or with the well-meaning yet disjointed advice from family and friends etc; having Gary on our side quite literally helped save my business, while maintaining even strengthening our relationships with our clients.

I have used Gary's services for a number of years. He's helped with such varied things as negotiating and writing contracts, my trademark application, and other issues relating to my LLC. He's always done a great advising me, particularly in making sure that any contract that I might enter into was fair to me. His billing is transparent and reasonable, and he is very responsive in his communications. I certainly expect to use his services again in the future.

Although she could not take my case, Ms. Horenstein graciously consulted with me at length and helped me understand what I was up against. I was at my wits end, panic stricken, feeling lost and hopeless. I am a former spouse who has been unable to find anyone willing to take my case to get a clarified/amended QDRO, because my ex is contesting it. DFAS found a mistake in the QDRO language after I’ve been receiving payments for over 20 years and now I’m just stuck searching for someone to help me. I found Ms. Horenstein to be caring, honest, kind, and understanding. She had the integrity not to just take my money and go through the motions, knowing that the my efforts were most likely to be futile and I would have just lost the money I had to take out a loan for. I am profoundly appreciative for her counsel, guidance, empathy, and integrity.

If you need to hire a skilled QDRO lawyer, look no further. Dru drafted two QDRO’s for me. Dru corrected all of the confusing misinformation I was receiving from my former spouse regarding one of these orders. Thank Goodness! You can rest assured that Dru will draft your needed QDRO expertly and timely. The QDRO process was new to me, Dru made it easy, which is much appreciated during the not so easy divorce process.

Dru Horenstein is certainly an expert in her field. She was the fourth attorney I had contacted about my problem and she solved it! After my divorce, I had tried to remove my ex from all access to my pension through the Washington Teachers Retirement System. Dru was very patient in explaining what others could not. Through several emails and a lengthy phone call, she put me at ease and helped me realize the facts of the survivorship. She helped me weigh the pros and cons of pursuing my case through the courts. She kindly told me not to "beat myself up" regaring the previous decisions I had made. I feel so much better now knowing the "real strory" behind my decision. I would recommend Dru to anyone who asked. I've already raved about her to several friends! She knows her stuff, is kind and very fast about getting back to clients!

We are contemplating a move back to Washington state where we lived for many years. Without proper estate planning we would potentially be subject to the Washington estate tax. n our initial contacts with the firm, we clearly identified that we were residents in another state. We were instructed to provide our detailed financial picture as well as our current estate planning documents which we provided promptly and told that our information would be forwarded to the attorneys for evaluation. The following is the email response. “Thank you for filling out and returning your Questionnaire. I will forward your information to our attorneys for review. Once they have completed their review, I will be back in touch with you regarding a quote for services and the next steps for scheduling.” Well over a month went by with no word back from STIB. I finally contacted them by email requesting a status update. Within minutes, I received the following reply. “Thank you very much for contacting our firm. Unfortunately, we are not able to take on your case. Our firm does not advise out-of-state residents on tax issues. Our focus is estate planning and long term care planning.” The STIB website clearly tax issues as part of estate planning. I also found no restrictions on attorneys in Washington state providing consultation to out-of-state residents considering residency in Washington. Needless to say, I was astounded by what I consider to extremely poor communication and timely follow-up. If it is indeed not their policy to advise out-of-state residents on tax issues, I would have expected to have been informed of that policy up front thus saving us the time of compiling and sending detailed and confidential financial and estate planning information. In my opinion, this represents incompetent and totally unprofessional behavior.

I had asked Alex to prepare a number of contracts and forms for my Branding Agency http://onlinemarijuanadesign.com He completed them promptly and stayed in constant communication with us. Even after the contracts were completed, I had a few revisions to them which he made the following day without charge. He did a great job and I would recommend him to anyone!

I hired Alex to represent me on a small auto accident. I was rear-ended and the other party denied liability. Alex kept in contact and seemed to be moving the case forward for a few weeks, but suddenly dropped off the face of the Earth. I attempted to contact him for several weeks to no avail. His phone was disconnected, he didn't respond to emails, or messages sent on social networking sites. He gave no indication that he was dropping me as a client and I had to hire a new attorney to finish the case. I don't know if Alex was experiencing personal problems but he did not give me the courtesy of letting me know why he stopped working on my case or communicating. I feel poorly treated and misled. My hope is he figures out if he wants to be an attorney before taking new clients in the future and then delivers the performance he seems capable of. He nearly cost me my settlement by missing deadlines and under-performing. It's a little sad because he seemed quite capable and was recommended by an acquaintance who assured me he was a straight-shooter and hard-working.

Alex Ferguson helped with my car accident case. He kept me informed along the process and always showed willingness to answer all my questions, but most importantly, he made it clear for my safety and well-being to be the number one priority for me to concentrate on. While he handled the difficult tasks involved with car accidents, I was able to focus on my treatment and two years later closed with a settlement that took care of all costs related to the accident. Thank you Alex for your commitment to my case.

Was involved with copyright infringement few years back. Having never been involved in such things and not knowing what to do, we panicked. Spoke to an attorney who wanted to meet up to do other things that would cost us more money. After speaking with John over the phone, he gave us options. John was professional, straight forward, and he gave us comfort. He kept us updated throughout the duration of the case. Everything was simple and convenient as it was all done via email or phone. His rate was fair and much cheaper than the alternative. The case is far behind us now, but John deserves this review. Will definitely use/recommend him in the future for patent, copyright and such cases. Thank you, John.

I am very pleased with the service that i have received from Whitaker Law group. I had Mr. Whitaker review an infringement notice that was sent to me by my ISP. At first thought I was scared to death. I am thankful that they took the time to go over this with me in much detail and handle all responses to my ISP. Needless to say, I sleep much better at night.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
