Cynthia Smith reminds me of what you would get as a public defender in Mexico. She is the representation of alienating fathers. She has been admonished for playing the role of the judge. This place should not employ such people. Spend the money and get a good attorney.

Lawyer hired, he was very arrogant and talked like he had it all under control. He was all talk. He charged a lot to do nothing and did not follow thru with his plan. He was hard to contact and talked to you like your were scum under his feet. He basically handed the other individuals our money without a fight.

My opinion of him: Unethical and unprofessional. Will tell you his politcal connections will get you things he cannot and did not deliver on. Politically motivated. Spent more time calling friends to politically push through an item that I thought was legal and hired him to take the appropriate legal steps on. Never took the legal steps of getting the law enforced. Had to go elsewhere and took care of the issue with little effort and quickly. Costly mistake to use this attorney.

She was a terrible lawyer. She did not fight for me but just acted like this was routine and I would have to settle with things I was not comfortable with. She was never available and acted annoyed when I talked to her on the phone. She did not contact me and let me know a legal proceeding had taken place.

Horrible Judge to an appeals case. Yelled at me several times throughout the hearing. Received his judgement back and none of it was based on anything said in the hearing. He didn’t even take the time to listen to the transcript. There were zero facts that he based his finding on. None of what he stated in his decision letter was true and none of it was said by either party!! Unemployment appeals website said their appeal hearings are designed for the claimant to represent themselves. This is absolutely untrue. There was a biased towards the other party because they hired a lawyer at the last minute. This man does not follow the law and should be disbarred!! He is lazy and didn’t even take the time to listen to the transcript! I would be less upset losing my case if he had actually done his due diligence and not concocted a story from memory. Horrible person and shitty leader in our Central Illinois community!

I was disappointed with his representation on an estate/probate matter in which I am a named heir, and the executor has been non-responsive to both myself and a different local attorney (opposing counsel). At the beginning, Mr. Reid was engaging and seemed to understand my goals and objectives, which were simple- to present myself to the courts as a named heir, and to compel the executor to take action after more than two years of inactivity. His engaging nature changed at the time that I returned my fee agreement and paid the retainer. He had already started the meter running before I signed the fee agreement. I asked him for clarification on a line item on his first monthly statement- where he admitted a billing error. He then told me that he was terminating his representation, citing that I had communicated with the opposing attorney. I do admit to communicating with opposing counsel, which was to provide supporting documentation on an estate which has been languishing due to the inactivity of the executor. Mr. Reid was copied on these documents and correspondence. He terminated his representation via e-mail. Not once did he advise me to avoid or cease communication with the attorney representing the estate. Not once did he call me to provide me with any updates of any kind. I received only three communications from him following the receipt of the retainer. One was to acknowledge the retainer. Two was a monthly statement- which was in his own admission, incorrect. Third was an e-mail terminating his representation. His communication style can only be classified as non-existent. I will be requesting the return of my entire retainer.

I engaged this lawyer for a very small employment matter and provided a retainer we agreed should be more than enough because I expected to continue using him matters related to starting a small business later. Relatively soon after we started I ran into long stretches where I would get no response and wasn't sure if he was still working on the matter or not. I eventually decided the poor communication and timing wasn't going to serve either of us and asked to stop ongoing work. When it came to getting the bill I again had to go through pains to get any kind of response over weeks and the bill included time for my requests to get a bill that had previously not been responded to.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
