Sheriff's deputies were serving a warrant at my house for a 475.00 medical bill. They wanted me to come say they could cuff and be big shots. They tried to enter my house through the front door. They basically broke in to my house I shut the door on them. They fell backwards. One ran up fast and sprayed pepper spray through hole in the door. They kicked the door their was a scuffle. I was a little disoriented after they spray the pepper spray right in my eye. I pushed them both down and escaped out of my back door . I jumped to fences and ended up on the street over. They were driving up and done the other street. It was like first blood I was John Rambo running. Finally I came out of the back of a house I was hiding. I turned myself in. The guy pulled the macho bust. Yelling to get on the ground guns pulled. All over a 475.00 medical bill. The 2 sheriff s deputies file four counts of assault and battery on me resisting arrest. One them got his shirt ripped off in the fight and the other guy got his hat stomp on. They also asked for restitution for their clothing. Dale took the case on a moments notice. They agreed to drop all charges. Dale was able to question the 2 deputies on the stand . He made them look like children. Case resolved that day. Dale did a super job. This was many years ago. I had to tell the story . I would highly recommend his services.

He initially was a Godsend... or so I very wrongly believed. After our first meeting in the court lock-up, when he told me how he was going to help me, everything changed, quickly and drastically. I called him from jail, collect, which he gets reimbursed for, and asked how he was doing. He very nastily and arrogantly said, "what do you want? This is a collect call." Right then I knew I was in trouble. His demeanor was so rotten, his hatred so blatant and his plans for me so obvious. He clearly had no intention whatever to defend me. I was hurt and confused by his 180 degree about-face and meekly tried to convey that to him. He was so mean! Each time I spoke with him, he repeatedly asked me if I'd like him to withdraw from my case. He only took my case to appease the court and make himself look good, never intending to help me, fully intending to hurt me, if I could stand his horrible, dispicable vicious treatment towards me. Of course I couldn't. At our last meeting at the jail, he kept asking me if I wanted him to withdraw about fifty times, so I said, "It's rather evident that you want to withdraw. Go ahead." He spoke not one word, smiled very condescendingly, picked up his laptop and briefcase and walked out on me. Period. My booking video stated clearly that I was arrested for Disorderly Conduct. Somehow I was now sitting in jail for attempted murder of a police officer with a knife! I sat there rotting for ten months, thanks totally to lousy, " only- good- if-you-pay-big-bucks," court appointed a-holes that have the audacity to look in the mirror and call themselves defense "lawyers." To allow such a miscarriage of justice is not only disgraceful and immoral and sinful beyond words, but it is worse than the bogus charge that I was tried and convicted for. Ten months in jail and four years of probation, and I wasn't even Disorderly. My life has been a nightmare since January 28, 2014 and it will never change. My faith in humanity, justice and God is DEAD. If you get him for a lawyer and you're not paying him and police lie their butts off, good luck. He rots, and that is a compliment for him.

All smiles and professional, until she has your money. Then, be prepared for unending frustration and disappointment when dealing with this attorney. My divorce turned into a 9 year bitter battle with non stop motions and court actions due to this attorney’s incompetence. She forgot court dates, wouldn’t respond to emails or return phone calls. She acted as if I was putting her out if I asked for clarification regarding my case and was often very rude in her response to my questions. The only thing she did pay attention to was her billing statement and how much she could get away with billing me for work she didn’t do. I was forced to take a lesser settlement with my ex to avoid going into further debt and continuing on with this nightmare of a lawyer. In the end, I am not sure who was the bigger snake, attorney Thorn or my ex!

The day I hired Jenn my life changed. I began to accept that my family had to live with the cards that were dealt to us. However, when meeting Jenn she quickly changed my perspective on life and gave me the confidence and the fearless attitude every mother should carry. I walked out of that courtroom with everything i intended on achieving. And that was all the time i had lost with my child. Jenn will believe in you and fight for you. She is my Devil who wears prada, but underneath all that tough exterior she is my angel. A mother, a woman, an amazing Attorney and a friend.

I have used Jenn Thorn as my attorney since 2003. Yes she's expensive, but worth every penny, what attorney isn't expensive? She has always been 100% honest with me and has always informed me of my rights throughout my entire divorce and thereafter. I had one other attorney who did absolutely nothing for me and I actu had to represent myself in court. I would highly recommend Jennifer and suggest anyone looking for a divorce attorney meet with a few attorneys. You will quickly realize Jennifer is one of the absolute best in western Massachusetts.

He is a well-respected elder law and estate planning attorney with leadership in national law organizations. We went to him for our estate planning and he was compassionate, kind, extremely practical, and always looking out for our best interests to make sure our assets will be protected and efficiently passed on to future generations. I would definitely recommend him to anyone considering estate planning or needing an elder law attorney.

Communication regarding a probate case was very limited. Response to issues and questions took an inordinate amount of time to be addressed. Questions repeatedly submitted were often not answered in an acceptable or timely manner. I assumed that Mr. Darling would have my best interests in mind and this was not the case. Since the hiring of Mr. Darling, I have been more than frustrated. This was not the way to handle a clients best interest and I can not and will not refer this attorney to anyone.

Despite what other attorneys would say, he used to be pretty good, so I continued to retain him. In fact, I've happily sent many people to him over the past 25/30 years or so. He's been my attorney for many years and I'd always felt like he had a genuine concern for my well being, but not anymore. He just stopped caring. Despite my repeated calls he doesn't return them, follow up or file needed paperwork, he just stopped one day. For many months, I was always told he wasn't in, so I've had to stop in the office unannounced, to catch him there and confront him. And over a year later; despite his apologies and promises to fix things, nothing. I only got paid a portion of my lawsuit, the injury. The loss of vehicle was never filed (or so he said) so "I" personally never got paid for that. I'm very disappointed, but I wish him well and hope he eventually gets it back together again.

This “attorney “ should be disbarred. First he insults me by calling me poor and telling me he’s only taking my case cause he feels bad for me. Then he collected $5000 cash from me. Less than 3 mths and 2 court dates later he needs more money and wasted hundreds on his assumptions that proved wrong. On MY dime. I was stuck. I had no choice but to stick with him over lack of funds to secure a new layer and he only harassed me for $$. Overall I spent approximately $9000 and ended up WORSE than when I started. This man is out for money only he has no care thought compassion in his entire being. Please do not hire him put this selfish soul out of business. Permanently

I had to actually research the case and provide him with info from the Registry of Deeds that he could have easily found. Also, he blatantly lied to me re what bills would be eliminated. It wasn't till the court date, that we found out that we still had to pay the mortgage even though he had assured us that the house was covered under the bankruptcy. And as far as him him keeping us informed, it was like pulling teeth to get any information from him. I will never again do business with him or the law firm that he is/was employed with.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
