During a time when my wife and I were faced with the enormous task of working through the details of planning and resolving our parents nursing home care and estate, Lori and her team provided the peace of mind and assurance we needed to know our parents would be taken cared for. This is a firm that knows what they are doing and will advocate for you with the greatest of passion.

As a solely disability and injury firm, we are frequently presented with the task of referring individuals out to other firms who handle matters outside our areas of practice. It is always with confidence that I recommend Ozarks Elder Law for estate planning, trust management, elder issues and Medicare planning. I have personally observed Attorneys Lori Rook and Jessica Kruse during their handling of complex legal matters, and I could tell that they aim for nothing but the best and most comprehensive representation for their clients. While estate planning and the tasks that go along with it can be a daunting and sometimes unsettling prospect, the ladies at Ozarks Elder Law have a genuine knack for putting their clients at ease and seeing their matters through to a prompt and appropriate resolution. I recommend their services wholeheartedly. Ashleigh MacPherson MacPherson Law, LLC

After my husband passed, I was seeking guidance regarding how to set up my will, power of attorney, healthcare directive, etc. I contacted Ozark Elder Law based on their local television commercial. I was assigned Amanda K. Wolf as my consultant and went on to use her services to set up my Revocable Living Trust. It was a pleasure working with Amanda. She is personable, concerned about doing the right thing for her clients, and easy to work with. Amanda is very knowledgeable and provides clear and concise information regarding the process and advantages of setting up an Estate Plan. In addition, I needed some direction on how to find help with paperwork for possible benefits from the VA. Amanda was instrumental in helping me connect with the appropriate organization. I am so grateful for all her help.

Lynn Johnson is an awful lawyer and very unprofessional. She consulted with my lawyer and put in an email that she was offering a resolution so we couldn't use it as evidence then continued to verbally assault myself and my wife by calling us names. She was reported to the Missouri Bar for unprofessional misconduct and an investigation was opened on her by the Missouri Supreme court. My lawyer said she was the most unprofessional lawyer he ever encountered in his 30 year professional career. She also put lies and perjury in legal documents knowing their false lies. Read her other reviews, she has displayed disgusting behavior. Stay away, I wouldn't recommend at all.

This was the worst lawyer I’ve ever had. She didn’t help me with anything, she would never speak up for me and would tell me to be quiet when I had facts. She would talk with the other lawyer and tell me I couldn’t say anything. Stay away from her because she doesn’t help at all.

All he wants is your money. My family retained him for $1500 and all he did was write up a parenting plan. The day I knew he was a bad lawyer is when he looked me in the eyes and said I will not get custody of my son. Even tho I was by far the better option. I wanted to fire him on the spot but my family insisted I stick with him. He didn't follow through with any evidence I provided... The only thing he followed through with was charging me money. He quickly ran out the retainer fee with emails and court appearances. I got a letter in the mail once stating that there was a court date. So I got dressed up and was 15 minutes early. I pull up and who do I see running across the road 15 minutes before the time court started.. Royce... I flagged him down and he didn't even recognize me. Finally after me telling him who I was we conveniently remembered and invite me into his office, just to charge me $75!! That was haof his hourly rate. Funny thing is that I was only in there for 5 minutes but he went ahead and charged me for 30 minutes.. The only thing he said was that I wasn't required to show up. Gave me a briefing on what he did at this court apperence, which was only to get the judge to sign the papers. The kicker is that he charged me another $1500 after he blew through my retainer fee of $1500. And he didn't do anything but write up a parenting plan. Worst experience ever and I do not recommend Royce to anyone.

I retained James Royce for a divorce, sadly I made a very expensive mistake, he is professional at opening letters and charging a high fee to do so, Mr. Royce did very little if anything to protect my property and retirement assets, he surprised me with hidden fees prior to entering the court room to represent in a very lengthy divorce. Mr. Royce left literally every issue I approached him with UNRESOLVED, tax issues, stock fund issues, property being hidden to property issues still unresolved to this date after excessive requests for resolutions in this matter, Mr. Royce did NOTHING to resolve child visitation issues, Mr. Royce DID take very aggressive action when he expected payment for ??? he sued me in the town that I reside in and during his court performance explained many personal issues related to my particular divorce case he also used my daughters disability as a plow to gain attention of the judge making it sound as if he and his staff worked long exhausting hours and days on visitation arrangements which were not logged in time sheets that he had charged me for. James Royce informed me after court that I have 10 years from my divorce date to take my "X" back to court to collect my property, --- Funny I thought I had hired him to do that for me. Mr. Royce has a strong issue with integrity when he was placed on the stand. Attorneys lie through their teeth !!!!!! I am confused about truth, and justice. "Just because you have a college degree hanging on the wall does not make you an honest man" Mr. Royce will speak with compassion and concern but actually doesn't give a damn with the exceptions of you wallet and be very aware of his wonderful friend Mrs. Housholder in Marshfield, MO

I hired brandy for a case involving my children. She is nice at first but before you know it (after she gets paid) she hardly ever responded to any of my texts, e-mails or phone calls! Half the time she wouldn't even show up to a scheduled appointment and when she did she was always always late! She didn't show up for court at least 5 times and it was important hearings that put my kids and I on a very thin line with not saying a word to me or other clients Brandy is untrustworthy and will fail you! A 5 year old could do a better job then her! She is soooo full of excuses and would never just shut up and listen to me! Brandy decided to re locate with no communication to me and along with other clients saying what she was doing! I am far from the only one who feels this way! Brandy is selfish and has no place being a attorney at law or anything important! I'm in the process of having her disbarred (which she has once already been) She acts like she's cares but drops off the face of the earth! She (how I feel) stole my money and never did her job.. Not even a little bit! I will stop at nothing to make sure everyone knows how she is! Brandy also drinks a lot or taking one of her many meds she told me about.. even durning court and while in office! She is a disgrace! I am normally loving and easy going but when my kids are at stake my gloves come off!

Hired this attorney. He took $500.00 upfront to "research" my case. He made a lot of promises. He never followed up., when I contacted him., he sent me a vague email clearly showing he had not done anything in my case! He gave me some generalized info about my case that I had already told him I was aware. He quickly pocketed my money and never did anything about my case!! I called the firm sometime later and found out he had left. He lied and told the firm he had sent me a package of information concerning my case. He never did.

Mr. Ingold does not communicate. He doesn't respond by telephone or email and is irritated when asked for details regarding the process. Because of this, I can't rate his level of knowledge. He has yet to demonstrate what level of expertise he possesses. His unprofessionalism and lack of communication lead us to feel he is not trustworthy.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
