Mr Mat Benton is hands down a life saving attorney for me and my family. He is on top of everything, so helpful, so supportive, and AMAZING in the courtroom!! We retained him for a DVPO case and a TPR case, both of which he won in our favor. He knows exactly what he is doing. I was a nervous wreck and he literally killed it in the courtroom. I could not have asked for a better attorney to have by my side and to speak for myself and my family. He made such a tireless and exhausting job look so easy! He is exactly the kind of lawyer you want/need to go to bat for you. I HIGHLY recommend him.

Mr. Schieck asked me what I wanted out of my divorce and he got me exactly what I wanted. My divorce was long due to COVID but he assured me if I hung in there he would deliver and he did! I'm very pleased with my outcome and he always kept me well informed and told me what he could do and what would probably happen on our court dates. Mr. Schieck is expensive but well worth it! You get what you pay for!

I would go to Charles for any legal representation needed . He helped me during a difficult family time , he was available to me even giving after hours contact . My situation turned out for the good of my family , but I own a local Salon and I refer everyone to him that needs help and he always goes above and beyond ! He is respected in the community and the courtroom , that is earned not just given freely . Anyone that has a great reputation , works hard and earns and deserves it . He will not let you down and is well worth the money .

I hired Charles over 4 years ago for divorce & custody of my now 7 year old daughter. It has been a nasty divorce to say the least. Charles is a no nonsense attorney that gets right to the core of the case & presents it brilliantly. He continues to impress me every time we go back to court. I don't know where I would be without Charles.

Mr. Johson and his legal team are one of the best we have ever hired. They kept us informed of all dates and progress on our case. Seth gave us excellent advice and the outcome of our case was just as he predicted. We spoke with him personally on a regular basis. He is now assisting us with some civil disputes with our business. He always responds promptly. He made an appointment with us to meet with him after hours so we could discuss some personal and professional legal needs. He offered to help us learn how to proceed with the case so we could handle some things ourselves to help reduce our legal costs if the case ends up going to court. We have already recommended him to three of our friends who are facing personal injury, divorce, and other civil disputes. If our personal and business matters can't be settled on our own, we will retain Seth for those as well. In all, Mr. Johnson is worth every penny.

Mr. Seth Johnson emailed me promptly when I requested a lawyer's aid in taking care of a serious traffic issue that included a warrant for my arrest in NC because I reside in California on March 8, 2010. He responded back promptly via email even though it was late on the East Coast. He is a pleasure to work with and very personable. He did exactly what he said he was going to do and took care of my issue without delay. In less than 1 week everything is right in my world again. Mr. Seth Johnson charged a flat rate but his services are definitely worth so much more. I am thankful that God lead me to him and him to me. He is a blessing. I would recommend his services to anyone who needs assistance and needs an attorney who really cares.

Peter Smith represented me on severe felony cases and was court appointed. Usually that means they don't care about what you want nor do they even speak to you until your day in court . Peter Smith went above and beyond what I ever expected from a court appointed representative. He was clear about what my options were and what he thought my best course of action was. He is one of the best lawyers I have ever had to represent me . I will hire him on all future cases because he really is straightforward and won't just tell you what you want to hear.

My wife and I consulted with attorney Peter A. Smith in Statesville, NC to create wills, living wills and powers of attorney. During the initial meeting, I found him to be respectful and knowledgeable. I explained clearly and specifically what I wanted to declare in the documents. He reiterated my requests back to me so I was sure he understood what I wanted. We came back the next week to review the documents that he created. Almost immediately, I could tell he seemed annoyed with my questions. He began to interrupt both me and my wife repeatedly. The wills were fine. But the living wills and powers of attorney were not. One section of the power of attorney was the opposite of what I requested and to which he agreed. When I asked about it, he said because of NC statutes, it was better this way. Furthermore, both the living will and powers of attorney did not contain the declarations I had requested. They were standard forms that I had to check boxes to declare what I wanted. It appeared that he put zero effort into these documents and would rely on me to fill them out the way I wanted. Maybe that's the way it's done today. But I still was concerned and asked him about it. When I questioned this, he became became belligerent, interrupted and raised his voice. Ultimately, he took all the documents back and told me to get out. He then ushered us out the back door.

I retained Mr. Davidson in Sept 2022 to do Absolute Divorce and Equitable Distribution that it most likely would be moved to a neighboring county, and he said that it was not a problem, He took my money and all he did was the Absolute Divorce. The Absolute Divorce was granted in January and in April Mr. Davidson said that couldn't represent me on the Equitable Distribution because it was being moved to neighboring county, I had asked many times that it might to neighboring county and he said that it was not a problem. He is member on the North Carolina Bar as a Councilors and knew that he did not have time to represent in the Equitable Distribution. So, he was paid $2,750.00 and all I got was the Absolute Divorce that should have been about $600.00 to $700.00 I filed a complaint with the North Carolina State Bar and with him being on the North Carolina Bar as a Councilors I feel that they took his side. So I would HIGHLY recommend not to retain Mr. Davidson for any thing. Thank You

My children and I had been going through a very difficult time with several legal issues that came up at once. David was very professional and told us what he thought we could expect and how each situation needed to be handled. He was completely upfront about fees from the beginning and had no hidden or added charges, which I had experienced with several other attorneys in the Iredell county area. His secretary, Tammy, was also very helpful through the entire process. One of the situations was something that I thought was going to ruin my child's life. David came through and got it all taken care of. Now we can go back to living a normal life again. I cannot express how grateful I am to him for all he has done for myself and my family!! Hire him!! I promise you will not regret it!!

Mr. Minor has been my attorney of choice for years now. I have referred all of my friends and strangers to him for one reason above all. The fact that Mr. Minor actually listens to you and doesn't treat you like a number. I have had several cases where I felt as if the police were harassing me and Mr. Minor did everything to not only comfort me but he handled these problems quickly and quietly and got the results I was after. His 25+ years in a small town with probably the best court record in the state is what I look for. There is no substitute for experience and that's why I will always recommend Attorney David Minor.

I'm shocked to see a one star review. I've used Atty. Crosswhite to handle the affairs of both my parents -- finances, VA Aid & Attendance, Medicaid planning, banking, etc. -- and found him to be nothing less than empathetic and caring. I should add that, at the request of a geographically (and emotionally distant) brother, I've since consulted with another estate planning attorney, one that gave me nothing more than boilerplate advise at a very high price. Atty. Crosswhite, in contrast, cut to the chase and gave me both the advice I needed and a map with which to proceed. So why the 'prep work' in the title of this review? Because you really need to take some responsibility and get your affairs in order BEFORE a consultation: finances, bank statements, insurance...all of it. The more you collect ahead of time, the more productive will be your interaction.

I hired one of the lawyers and she was very good. She left and put me in contact with another in the firm. He took several months to return my calls ; he lost my name and number. He never completed the work. I tried again to get a form notarized and they refused unless I made an appointment for another consultation. This was after I had already paid for work not completed.

Jessie Conley made me feel like I was going to win my divorce case. She made me feel like I was on top of the world, BUT all LIES! She does not make a game plan strategy, she had extremely poor communication skills with me, she was very unorganized and did not stand up for me. Come to find out even District Court Judges in Iredell County do NOT like her. I DO NOT recommend her at all. I was so dissatisfied that I got another attorney to try to salvage what little I had left to my name.

I had a scheduled appointment with this Attorney for a Child Support issue. I am out of state and had to take vacation time to leave so I could have Privia y for our consultation. Our appointment was at noon. At 12:15 I called the office to find out why I had not received her call and the receptionist was not informed and said she would have someone call me asap. Nothing……. So at 1:10pm I gave up and headed back to the office only for her to call at 1:14 and say her early appt went over. She hasn’t read over my papers and was unprepared and it seemed that me paying her was more important than her listening to me. She even told me that she thought my ex husbands Attorney was pleasant to work with after he had spewed untruths and lies in a demand letter to me. To top it off, our conversation only last for 40 minutes when I paid $300 for an hour. Unprofessional and unsympathetic. I have an hourly job so $300 is a lot of money to me. Just very disappointed and will not recommend her to anyone who needs kindness and support. If this office was fair they would give me a refund for inconsideration of my time, tardiness and for not giving me the entire hour.

If you're looking for a divorce lawyer...keep looking. This guy is a joke. He does nothing. The paralegal is the only one that does anything and the letters/communication/court docs are written at a high school level. He never keeps his appointments. He's always "in court" and the girls in the office give you the runaround. Nothing is ever accomplished. He drags it on and lets opposing counsel have the upper hand. Worst and most unprofessional experience with a lawyer ever!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
