LA century Law was great. The lawyers and staff went above and beyond for clients right and got a good settlement for me. I would definitely recommend LA Century Law if you had an accident injury. Thank you LA Century 🙏🙏🩷🩷🩷

How this attorney office located in Tarzana, California customers give them 5 stars, I don’t get it. I have been debating with this attorneys for almost a year, and I never received a honest/caring telephone call from the attorney in charge for my worker’s compensation case. I am in pain awaiting to be evaluated by a physician, still awaiting for telephone number to make an appointment. They have secretaries in their offices trying to speak Spanish, I don’t know why, when you speak English, the problem is that you pay the consequences, they don’t solve the problem. I feel very deceit, they have mishandled my case, my body parts injuries are in pain and nothing has been done it since they took my case. They will send you to a his chiropractor in Van Nuys, there is no much they can do about it, they are chiropractors, not physicians, if you are injured, seek for a real attorney who is willing to help you with your case. I went to the attorneys office couple of times, they are not even opened the office door for me, you call them and they never answer the telephone calls. Don’t waste your time trying to get help from this apparently legal office ACCIDENT DFENDERS Attorney AtLaw, trust me, you will be wasting your time.

After my Injury I felt I really didn’t have anyone who could/would explain the process of navigating through workers compensation case (system). Diana did just that. She walked me through what I believed is a very difficult process and answered every question I had along the way. It wasn’t a short process but I never doubted my case was in good hands. Thank you. Diana!

Back in August, I called Goldfarb & Luu to update my revocable trust. I last updated in 2001. The quote was $1050.00 depending on how much time is spent reviewing it. If a paralegal reviews it. It is $295.00 per hour. If an attorney needs to review it, it is $525.00 per hour. Annette , Rebecca’s administrative assistant and I agreed on a schedule by phone with a paralegal and Rebecca. Then shortly after, I received an email but the schedule to talk to Michelle/paralegal and Rebecca had completely changed without our prior agreement .She agreed to revert Michelle’s back to the original but was quite adamant not changing Rebecca’s schedule as Rebecca’s schedule was quite full but her schedule wasn’t convenient for me. Nevertheless I consented because I liked to get it moving . After talking Michelle I wasn’t happy about it . Michelle and I spent 15 minutes , verifying the account numbers of each of my asset account. I felt what she did as a paralegal wasn’t warranted as it was quite clerical and didn’t require a paralegal to ask me if my account numbers as stated were corrected. That phone call and reviewing the existing estate plan costed $206.50 ( 0.7 hours or 42 minutes . My phone record indicates 15 minutes so she used 27 minutes to review my old trust ). Rebecca reviewed my trust and wrote the following “ Your trust is only 16 pages long and is missing critical sections so unfortunately, we cannot amend it and need to restate it. The most cost efficient option moving forward will be our Comprehensive Estate Planning where you will get all new documents - $5900 “ , to which I replied what “ My trust is a folder that is 3 inches thick. I don’t know what you meant by only 16 pages long. As for $5900.00. According to Google A detail estate planning costs $900 to $5950. Mine is simple. … I have no houses, no exotic cars, no sail boats, nothing physical that I want to give away. I don’t know why it will cost me $5900.00. “. Rebecca didn’t respond to my question . She just replied I need to redo my 5 health directive. I called 2 attorneys from a list suggested by Fidelity. One quoted $3500 to $5000.00 and another quoted $4000 to $6000 . Both said the price depends on complexity. If I have multiple properties, own business, limited partnership etc, then it will be at the higher end of the range. She said in my case, it would be more toward the lower end of the range or around $3000 , less than half of what G & L wanted . At that point, I felt that Rebecca’s price is way of line . I got the impression that $1050 is a done deal, a bit more or a bit less. I agreed to move forward after the initial 30 minutes free consultation. Her suggestion of “Comprehensive Estate Planning “ wasn’t warranted because mine is simple. I called Rebecca I am cancelling the next appointment, reminding myself that her rate of $525.00 per hour . I told her I will pick up my trust folder. When I showed up her staff returned my folder , plus a check for $656.50. I paid $1050.00 so her company spent $393.50. The invoice itemized each email and time spent reviewing the old trust. I counted 9 email responses costing $187.00 or $21.00 per email response on the average . So after spending $393.50, I accomplished absolutely nothing. By chance I found a company called The Document People near Topanga Canyon and Ventura Blvd on Google. I called them. Andrea answered. I also watched their video in preparation for that. The quote was $799 for single. $899 for couple. All I have to do is to setup an appointment, come in and fill out some forms ( to start from scratch ), return to sign some forms . Regardless of complexity, it takes about 1 week. Appointments were readily available. Email and phone responses incur no charges ( as opposed to to G & L where I can be charged for that ) I just got my trust updated for $399.00 last Tuesday. I lost $393.50 . but I saved $5500.00

Positioned themselves as a full-service practice at a critical time when I was moving my mom from out of state to be better able to take care of her. Every one of their "specialists" knew nothing about their supposed subject area, except to refer me to other for pay professionals outside the practice. Then, when I would ask the questions the practice couldn't answer, they would tell me that that was something that the practice should have been able to answer for me. Literally got more value out of the utterly free services from the retirement community center around the corner from my apartment. Also blew through $600.00 of the $1,000 retainer and literally produced nothing of any substance. And had the gall to tell me that the complete, straightforward, out of state estate documents I had and just needed to be brought into compliance with California law would have to be completely redone from scratch because of one missing addendum of absolutely no consequence. Do not recommend.

After my Injury I felt I really didn’t have anyone who could/would explain the process of navigating through workers compensation case (system). Diana did just that. She walked me through what I believed is a very difficult process and answered every question I had along the way. It wasn’t a short process but I never doubted my case was in good hands. Thank you. Diana!

I am very happy with Alex Berlin. His brilliant representation during the hearing and immigration court helped my friend to get his asylum claim approved. Originally, my friend came to the US and applied for a political asylum with another attorney and got his case rejected by US Immigration. I found the Law office of Alex Berlin through a colleague's recommendation. I am very satisfied with his professional attitude as well as humane side. He has a great team, answers calls personally even on weekends and after hours. I recommend the law office of Alex Berlin to all my friends, family members and colleagues.

I do not recommend consulting this lawyer. Marlene provided me with a very horrible initial consultation experience. Facts: 1) I called regarding an elderly relative who currently receives SSI benefits, and is at risk of losing them when he receives an insurance settlement payment in the near future. 2) I tried asking her simple questions about what he can do to avoid losing his benefits (e.g. set up a Special Means Trust) 3) When I tried to ask questions, she would interrupt me, and accuse me of asking bad questions. 4) I felt rushed during the consultation when she told me "I don't know you and I am talking to you for free" multiple times.

I used Ms Seltzer for my trust planning and was very pleased. I found her knowledgeable and timely. Her prices seemed quite fair also. I also recommended her to a family friend for a probate situation.

In 2006 I found myself in the position of Administrator of an estate for a friend of over 35 years. It was a difficult matter due to the fact that the Will was not a current instrument and many of the beneficiaries were deceased as well. Marlene was unwaivering in her approach as to complete fairness and equitable treatment for all the remaining beneficiaries of the Estate. She gave excellent counsul to me in doing the necessary to distribute and close the Estate. I always felt I couldn't have had better legal counsel. At all times she anticipated the needs of the family and myself and ensured a smooth process every step of the way. I would recommend her where the situation was volatile and needed some finesse in the transactions between all of the parties.

I had a zillion questions for Mr. Parker and he was informative and kind and didn't rush me off the phone which I find rare in professional busy men these days. Thank you for your time and patience answering all my questions Mr. Parker. I look forward to getting started with my case now that I understand the process.

I do not recommend Barry S. Parker. The State Bar Court of California found him guilty of Multiple Acts of Misconduct in 2005. He was put on probation for one year. You can read about it at this link: http://members.calbar.ca.gov/courtDocs/02-O-15887.pdf I am also filing a complaint about his Misconduct with my case in 2007-2009. He lead me to believe he was working on it, then did not return calls and correspondences. My claim was closed. I was able to re-open it by filing a lawsuit in the court with one month left on the 2 year Statue of Limitations. You can file complaints against lawyers by calling 1-800-843-9053 (toll free in California) or 1-213-765-1200 (from outside California). You can also search information about attorneys in California at the following link: http://members.calbar.ca.gov/search/member.aspx If anyone has any additional information about Mr. Parker's Misconduct, please e-mail me at (email removed by Avvo).

I was just reminded of this lawyer recently and I had say something to warn people. I had started a green card petition years ago (back in the 90's) with him, and I remember then he wanted retainer plus monthly payments to get the ball rolling. Well he had no problem taking the money but did he start the ball rolling? No. In fact, he's a master of delaying and dropping the ball. After 1.5 years of not doing anything, I stopped the petition and got another lawyer. I asked for my money back (to that point I had paid him $1500) he said that he would minus his admin costs. I got back $250! What a joke of lawyer.

Upon agreeing on terms for Green Card petition, he requested a payment of 50% his fees upfront. He forgot about my case due to personal issues. None from his staff informed me about delay until I myself asked him about the case. He was supposed to file a petition in February 2002. In fact, it was filed 6 months later, in August 2002. It caused my Green card case delay until 2008. This is not the only reason I'm giving a lowest possible rate to Mr. Chernick. He filed EB-3 petition suggesting it would be the fastest way to GC. However, in 2005 it became clear EB-3 petitions could be stack forever. I haven't heard from Mr. Chernick about that - I was on my case much better and informed than him - it certainly seemed this way. In the late of 2006 I requested a meeting with him and we met in a couple of weeks. I came up with suggestion we convert my case from EB-3 into EB-2. His response: "Hm, it might be a good move! Let's do it." And we did. I got my CG in November 2008, 7 years after I payed him his fee. Ridiculous! If you have a choice, go elsewhere.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
