They have been dragging their feet, losing paperwork and costing thousands of dollars on a simple divorce where neither of us had any children or assets. I have changed jobs a couple times and they want to charge to redo the paperwork. Why wasn't the paperwork turned in in the first place? They have lost paperwork so many times and then want to charge to replace it. I feel like they are scamming us because of all of their mishaps. We have to pay for it. A divorce that should have only cost a few hundred dollars at the most has cost thousands of dollars because of their lack of trying or just a desire or greed for money. Taking advantage is the best thing I can say about them. It's ridiculous! Do not use them!

Paul W. Darby is one of the best attorneys I have ever had work for me. He was very professional and helped me through the long and daunting process of my divorce. Was very thrilled to read the outstanding reviews. Helping a friend of mine I began calling around & I reached out. I was shocked when they told me ( within the 1st 60 seconds) $500 for a consultation and a $20k retainer fee upfront before accepting any type of child custody or parental rights case. Such a shame the kids in moderate to low income situations will never have the benefit of representation from such a great law firm. One more thing money CAN buy; your child's rights.

While I understand the message of " you get what you pay for " that you are trying to convey, that message has no bearing on my original review or interaction with this firm. In fact, I feel like this response just confirms my original statement.
Once the well rehearsed statement of upfront fees was given ( the next statement after the greeting ) perhaps a mention of how to find affordable options, self help libraries or alternative resources available for families in need would have made me feel like that paragraph you wrote about giving back to the community ( for reasons outside of gain) would be true and this review wouldn't exist.
I would like to remind you I still give credit to the talent in this firm. I called here for a reason. Reviews are about experiences you have with the location or business & this was mine. I am not the only one who has experienced this. I hope sharing my experience may give us all a voice and, in a perfect world, make a small change for the better.

My son needed a good lawyer - somebody who understood both the law and the Lake County community. While I am not willing to go into specifics about my sons case, Laura was exceptionally knowledgeable of the laws concerning his criminal defense. I haven't even hired Attorney Hargrove yet and her secretaries Cheryl and Lauren are beyond the best. When I initially spoke with Attorney Hargrove she let me know that she's read my discovery. Upon just reading the affidavit, she alleged that I shouldn't have been arrested...! She's effective and efficient with her clients. I've seen her in action and she's a Doberman in the courtroom! With this law firm, it puts your nerves to ease.

The day after Christmas 2023, I was pulled over by the Leesburg Police department for driving without my headlights on. What started as a traffic stop, ended up as a DUI .
Anyway, I was recommended to Hatfield and Stack by a friend and I’m so glad I went to them. Upon meeting Adam, I found him tobe personable, attentive and reassuring.
He was focused on even the slightest of details that I would never have noticed.
He was professional and made me feel like he was truly on my side and that he would fight for me!
I told him I did not want to plea bargain and that I wanted a jury trial to prove my case. He was ready and willing to fight with me.
Well, today he called with excellent news as my case was dropped - even before going to trial.
Anyway, Adam took my case and I have to say that he was- by far- the least expensive atty that I had checked into - even $4500 below what another atty was going to charge me .
His fees were fair and he was fair, honest, intelligent and, most of all, personable and easy to like and understand.
Do yourself a favor if you are arrested with a DUI - hire Adam Stack or another atty in this law firm. They will have your best interests at heart and they won’t try to take all of your money from you in the process!

If you looking for a good attorney. This office you will not find one. They will do plenty of motions knowing, Judge won't grant them, also send many i mean hundreds of emails to take your money. It should be unethical to take advantage of hard working people. Unfortunately they do everything by law what, is so unbelievably favored by attorneys. My case was difficult, but when money runs out, they don't care anymore. Absolutely no mercy. I understand it's business, but people could make payments and other arrangements. Miss Kelly, who i never actually even meet in person. She was the one making decisions and lied to me through Miss Anastasia another attorney ,they would help me finish the process even though, I didn't have enough money to cover immediately. But all lies and left me high and dry 0 help and had to find another attorney, who confirmed me how bad I was taken advantage of this Firm. I work for Lake County Sheriff's Office as Deputy and I am truly embarrassed of what they do to some clients. At least to me. I still owe them financially and will pay them, they keep calling and sending emails of collection threats. 0 understanding of how divorce affects people financially. But I will never forget this firm, unfortunately bad experience way. God has a plan and from something so bad I found a great attorney who was actually ethical and compassionate and explained what and how this firm took advantage of me. Good luck to you all. I have a very ugly high-conflict custody battle. To give you an idea, at one point, simultaneously, there was a related criminal domestic violence case, civil court domestic violence case, DCF was investigating for child maltreatment, a travel injunction is imposed - even the federal state department and Customs and Border Patrol got involved
It took a grueling 6 months to force the other side into mediation once we started pursuing it.
My lawyer and I had no expectation that this case could be successfully resolved in mandatory mediation. We were basically preparing for trial with the goal of getting an impasse quick and efficiently.
My lawyer, Paul Darby, fought to have Tim Keough appointed as the mediator due to his good reputation for not wasting people's time and money if a case is obviously unlikely to settle.
To me and my lawyers surprise, Tim was able to pretty quickly steer things in a direction where settlement became a possibility and then eventually the reality.
We ended up with an outcome that is probably extremely close to how a trial would have resulted - but saving me probably an entire additional year of stress and uncertainty and more back-breaking legal costs that take years to recover from.
I'm extremely grateful that Tim dug his heels in and committed to getting the case settle. I was impressed by how seriously he took the matter and he remained determined throughout day.
I would definitely recommend Tim for mediation.
He spared me and my family a ton of unnecessary pain.

Hired him for a family case 2021. Gave a retainer to hear that nothing needed to be done with my case for now. 2024 comes around and finally the case starts moving. I had to call several times, text his secretary, and email them all to get an answer of he is no longer practicing family law and my retainer in nonrefundable, there is nothing he can do for me and I should hire someone else.

In April of 2022, I lost two sons in a car accident.
July of 2022 after being harassed since April, 3 days after two of my son's died April 16th my four and two years old, dcf decided to begin to harass me. Immediately I start contacting mr cartelli, before the boys were taken in July I had informed him by hysterical emails documenting everything going on before even retaining him, I retained him a few days after their removal. I have listened to each word he's suggested and I am trusting him to keep his word so far he has.
He is very caring, a very good person to retain as an attorney because he doesn't do this for the money he does this mostly because he wants to help and he cares.
He does email back, he does call back. He's very welcoming to surprise drop ins, he always finds time to talk with me. Unlike a big law firm he's one person, against an entire court room. Trust him, what he says. If you retain him in the end youll be happy.

Mr Cartelli will no fight for you. He didn't care about my case, didn't answer my calls, and didn't discuss with me what i really need and finally didn't respect my desire, favor the other part. He only get the divorce over with. I do not recommend him at all. He even sent proposals to the judge that I strictly disagreed with.

Hired Steve for representation, in my opinion he basically was not due diligent in his efforts. As a result I wound up with a bad plea deal and a lot of misrepresentation. He also wanted to trade services and we did but he never refunded me the money he initially took. Look when you need an attorney perhaps for the most important time of your life you need an aggressive attorney who will fight for you every step of the way. I am sorry to say Steve Birr is not that kind of attorney. You will mostly find yourself taking a plea deal due to the lack of confidence Steve instills.

I hired Mr. McCormick to handle a case. He did not take the time to do his homework and do his own research.He would call me for the advice on what I hired him to do.
He also stated that he would be filing several motions on my behalf which he failed to do.
He also failed to send me any filings or emails from opposing counsel in my case.He was not prepared for the last hearing that I had.I received a phone call from another attorney,after that hearing,who confirmed that I needed to get an experienced attorney.
I changed attorney's as soon as I was able to.
Mr.McCormick stated to another attorney that I was difficult to deal with.
I think as an attorney that was very unprofessional.
All I wanted was Mr.McCormick to do his job.
He is young and needs more experience in the courtroom,as well as doing more research on his own.

I hired Mr. Remsen to finish a family law case I’d been fighting on my own for a year. He did exactly what I asked him to do and got the case close in one hearing, a couple motions. I paid him $5000, which I was under the impression was a retainer. Out of that only $2000 was used. When the case was closed I assumed I’d receive the remaining $3000. After months of emailing the firm I was told that I wouldn’t be receiving that money back, it was their money. So basically I he made out like a bandit on my case. BEWARE. Read the contract! At the time of hiring him I was extremely distressed and basically at the end of my rope with my case. I was tricked. I was never TOLD that money couldn’t be returned. It was snuck into the paperwork. Very disappointing. He did what get what I needed done so that’s why he’s getting two stars but I worn you. Don’t hire this man thinking you won’t be robbed.

David Cauthen staff miswrote my QDRO (401K) Settlement, it was suppose to be 50% (acquired during the marriage) and I was only award 18%. With no response to communication for over 18 months. QDRO communicated the direction to correct the error, again no response. It was sent to judge for signature without my signature. My divorce took over 3.5 years as we split acreage I needed to get access (easement) to the parcel I was keeping, today I am land locked with no access. I have a small herd of Black Angus Cows which need to be feed and attended to. I've lost my 1st calf (in 13 years), and the cows busted a water pipe on the barn and now I have paid over 500 in electric bills. And most likely my well is shot. I took a boat across lake to access the property. I have documentation that I came with all the money (from real estate) to purchase and develop land. This attorney got me no financial support (I was injured during marriage). David Cauthen is nothing but a quick settlement lawyer. He does not work for his clients needs. He also was my SSDI Attorney, and Lost that case too! Do not use this attorney if you want to win!

I use the word attorney loosely, do not use this man. He represented me in a case and made mistakes, not one but mistakes after mistakes. He was litigating a case for me for a year, collecting $15,000 and the case is no farther one year later from when he started. His office does not return emails and phone calls besides over billing and double billing.

I paid my retainer, then attempted contact, phoning four different days. On fourth request told her paralegal I had to let her go. Less than an hour later I received a phone call from Ms. Balmer but stated I felt that was no way to begin a professional relationship. I was charged almost $600 plus $275 for initial consultation and she had never even filed the notice of appearance as my attorney.
