Barbara, was assigned my case in June or so of 2018. She was attentive, she returned my calls, she spoke with me regarding the case and was really like a level headed friend. She always acted like she cared and always told me the truth. She was credible, powerful and determined and we were ready to go to trial. The prosecution waivered and stumbled on a bit of their evidence gathering and Mrs. Lewis was there to illuminate it. She is just as excellent in the detective and fact gathering part of my case as she was pressing the prosecution during the pre trial motions and the many court appearances leading up to the actual case. The prosecution ended up dropping the case, and Mrs Lewis had saved me from being charged with a crime I didn't commit. Ive never had a public defender before (I hope I never do again) But if you're in a position of needing an attorney, I couldn't give a more sincere recommendation of Mrs. Lewis's attorney services for both legal and personal support.

After consulting with Mrs. Lewis (Volpe) I was at first instructed by her that I just needed to accept the deal she had devised. After a long productive conversation where I felt like she really listened to my concerns, we changed the course and went in a new direction. Mrs Lewis (Volpe) not only Spearheaded the defenses case and won but, also coordinated a line of communication between the two parties which will greatly effect the outcomes for years to come... She is someone you want on your side. If you take the time to discuss the details of the case with her.

If I could give her a zero I would. She was appointed by the courts in our high conflict divorce. She recomended 50/50 custody even though there was past evidence of emotional abuse by my ex (the evidence was in file from before Amy was appointed but she refused to review past files). Since the 50/50 orders, my ex is not providing the medical care he was ordered to do. I have informed Amy of these issues and she will not answer my emails and is not attempting to help her clients, my children.

Mr Liss was paid $500 as a retainer for my probate matter. He made several broken promises. He had promised me paperwork to file and never provided it. A week later I email Mr Liss for the paperwork and he never responded. I then called him and he also never answered Two weeks after the promised paperwork to file he avoided my calls so I called from an alternate number. And guess what he answered! He couldn’t grasp his words when he answered and then again promised me the paperwork that weekend. Once again he failed on his word to provide it to me. So I wrote Mr Liss today and told him moving forward I am hiring someone new because this matter is very important to me. I basically got a letter sent to the other party for $500. Justine does not answer phone calls in response to concerns about being potentially scammed by their client. Instead I was faced with heavy handed threats of legal action that would have unconstitutionally taken away my rights. All I have been wanting is my property back. It even got to a point to where their client lied to a judge in order to file this legal action. She was also calling me multiple times from a private number calling me names and such. So now this review is my only recourse in an attempt to seek Justice from being taken advantage of and abused through the court system by this law firm and their client. The client's name is Neydi Garcia. She has been charged with 23 felonies involving theft, embezzlement, and filing a false tax return. Justine, please call me back so we can find a resolution. Ind Est, just reimburse me for the engagement ring that Neydi said you guys would send back to me, but didn't.

TERRIBLE! Samuel Huestis has done nothing for my case. It has been 5 months and he hasn't filed discovery, notices of pendency or anything other than the initial petition and objections. The court has nothing from us which tells our side of the story. He doesn't return calls or emails (except from opposing counsel) and refuses to explain why he is not doing anything. The case is so damaged that other attorneys are saying they can't represent me because of liability. DO NOT USE SAM HUESTIS!

Mr Huestis completely detached himself from me as a client by refusing to return any of my emails and phone calls over a critical 3 week period of time regarding our opposing counsel's new legal challenge to our case. I finally decided that I had no other options left but to hire another attorney to replace him. Then on the very same day that he received the substitution of attorney agreement from my new attorney, Mr Huestis decided to record several more billable hours to a sum total exceeding my initial retainer by several hundred more dollars while retroactively claiming complete ignorance that I now wanted him off the case. He was totally apathetic until it came to his fees.

I have worked with Sam Huestis since 2018. He is an EXTREMELY ethical, honest, fair, & trustworthy trust litigation lawyer who is an outstanding advocate! After my Mom passed, I greatly resisted hiring a lawyer to represent me; consequently, I suffered a great deal of blatant unfairness and animosity from a combative & extremely expensive trust litigation law firm whose legal bills rapidly depleted tens of thousands of dollars from my Mom's trust. Ironically, this other firm is exactly why my Mom, and many others in this world, abhor dealing with lawyers. Getting burned by the other expensive & arrogant trust litigation law firm reinforced my distrust of lawyers. When I interviewed trust lawyers in Ventura County, I learned few are "trust litigation" lawyers. Sam is a "trust litigation" lawyer. This means he can go the full distance to trial, if necessary, which avoids the added cost of hiring a 2nd lawyer if things must go to trial. When I hired Sam, I was a deep cynic of both trust litigation lawyers and the trust laws that seem to protect unethical successor trustees at the expense of the rights of beneficiaries. Sam put an immediate stop to the abuse I suffered from the opposing arrogant law firm; he leveled the playing field. Sam also billed fairly and protected my money by doing things in the most cost effective manner. There are very few words that properly convey my PROFOUND sense of appreciation for Sam Huestis, an extremely rare, fair, honest, ethical, and talented lawyer! Sam Huestis is the antithesis of the worst types of lawyers; this is why Sam Huestis was/is my knight in shining armor. I consider myself terribly blessed to have found Sam. I am forever grateful to him for all he did to protect my best interests with my Mom's trust....and for transforming me from a deep cynic....to someone who is forever deeply grateful. My heartfelt thanks for all you did to create justice and fairness for me Sam!

An utter rip-off. Hired a rip-off company CA Traffic Tickets and they hired this guy to do a traffic court case. DeJon Lewis had 2.5 stars on Avvo--which shows him to be a 'personal injury attorney' with 3 comments calling him incompetent and lazy--wow, I wish I'd seen those first because I agree.) He feels his only job is showing up in court in your place to PLEAD YOU GUILTY. He never spoke to me once until he was in court, never told us what was up with the case (apparently, it was being delayed for months because he requested date changes and then did not show had to find this out on our own by reading the online docket from the court). When he called the convo lasted all of 2 minutes, saying, quote: "Hi, I'm the lawyer handling your case. Do you prefer to lose your license for a month or pay a $1000 fine and do community service?" That was it. $650 down the drain. I would have never hired him myself, but he's who we ended up with from that fraud business--makes sense they would work together. We'll be reporting this guy to the bar association and suing him for malpractice. He should not be allowed to practice law. He did not inform me he would be pleading me guilty. Nor did he informed me I was "required to appear in court to show evidence of my service hours." He could have appeared on my behalf to present the evidence (after all, that's why you hire an attorney) but he didn't--just ignored my calls. Moreover, he told the referral service to tell me to mail in my hours. Had I done so, I would have lost my license. Bad lawyers are truly worse than none.

I am experiencing every negative comment others have posted previously. No contact or follow up. Rude staff makes continuous excuses as to why my case is ignored. Won’t fight for necessary medical treatments. Haven’t received a single payment and I have permanent injuries. 9, 10, 12 years is way to long and I was not forewarned that this would go on for so long. It really is disheartening when you trust someone then hire them only to get no information and being left hanging. It’s extremely stressful not knowing what is going on. Do not hire him!

Upon initial contact over and decade to ago, Warren Green successfully sold himself as a knowledgeable, hard-working, fiduciary with extensive Workmen’s Compensation experience. After over a decade of “ grappling “ with the Workmen’s Compensation system it became clear that Warren green expended very minimal time working on the case, never scheduled a single hearing with an administrative Workmen’s Compensation Judge or expanded efforts to bring the case to trial. BEWARE that he does not provide clients with an email address, business voicemail, or a cell for text or voice communication. He clearly has established his practice of minimizing any paper trail beyond the minimum to keep the case open. He clearly was not “ fighting “ to address necessary medical care and/or a settlement. When you ask him a straightforward question ( which you can typically google with some effort ) he will tell you that he does not deal in reality. Minimal (rude) support staff, no apparent paralegal support at all; patiently waits for the case to settle at any percent ( with absolute minimal effort to organize or advocate ) counting on his percentage of ANY settlement. If you do retain him, it will be virtually impossible to obtain alternate councel. BEWARE!!

I was a client of Ouebacker's. He represented me in a Pasadena Court for a restraining order and divorce that we were filing. I would not recommend Ouerbacker as an attorney. These are the things I did not like: 1.)  He and his office staff chose to write my testimony for me. The testimony that they wrote had errors. The errors were serious enough that I made multiple attempts to explain the corrections needed to Ouerbacker and his staff. The recommended corrections to my testimony were never made by Ouerbacker or his staff prior to the filing. Submitting inaccurate statements to the Court was a very uncomfortable way for me to start out my case. I did not like this. I believe that this action also led to complications later in the case.  2.) There were witnesses available to support my case. Ouerbacker was made aware of who these people were and how to get a hold of them. Ouerbacker did not subpoena any witnesses. He did not gather any statements from the witnesses. The most crucial witnesses were our neighbors who were direct witnesses to certain events and school district employees, including a counselor and a principal, who had interviewed my children prior to any filings. Ouerbacker told me that he was not going to call any witnesses. And he did not. Since my ex's lawyer did call a witness and did submit a witness statement, I began losing credibility with the judge and the judge was getting agitated with me. I did not like that there was data that was available for Ouerbacker to use to support our case but that he chose not to use this information. The damage that this caused to our case was apparent through the comments the judge began making with each passing court date.  3.) I did not like that Ouerbacker did not make sure that witness statements and appointments made were reaching me. I was in a confidential location during the case, and so my only source of court documents as well as child support payments was through Ouerbacker's office. I missed a counseling appt that Ouerbacker did not make me aware of. Ouerbacker's office miplaced and failed to send me one my child support checks until I called his office and asked the receptionist to assist me. I did not see a crucial witness statement (i.e., the judge entered it as evidence against me) that my ex submitted and that I could have easily helped Ouerbacker respond to, until we were sitting in front of the judge for one of our court dates. I did not these things. As a client of Mr. Ouerbacker's, these things were tremendously distressing to me.  4.) We did not fare well in the court case. Because the judge based his opinions on a case that appeared to me to be missing a substantial amount of supporting documentation, this was a disappointing outcome for me and something I did not like.        5.) I did not like that Ouerbacker set up my child support payments to go to his office but did not assist me when I asked him to have the checks rerouted to my own address. I had a conversation with him on the day that I was signing papers to terminate services with him. He would agree to have the checks rerouted directly to me or offer me advice on how this is done. So for a short time after he was no longer my attorney, the child support checks were still going to his office until I figured out how to resolve the situation myself.

I spent less than 5 minutes in his office this morning and in that time, this attorney did everything in his power to agitate me with his arrogance by telling me without looking at ANY of my medical reports, or hearing anything about all my new disabilities since I was originally given SSDI in the first place!! He took a look at me and said in a stern voice and without even letting me explain my health issues, "I'm not going to take your case unless you have medical paperwork saying that you 100% disabled!!". I then handed him a pile of medical records, and said very upset, "Here are my records! You will see that I'm disabled!". Not liking that I was clearly upset by his abrupt egotistical interrogation, he then handed me back my records and told me to get out of his office! Unbelievable! After I got cancer and after I was originally approved for disability in the first place, I then broke my back 3 times, in 9 places over a 1 year period time. Radiation treatment for colon cancer weakened the structure of my bones and I now have osteoporosis and arthritis, I limp from that and I lost 3 inches in height. I also now have other physical disabilities from the cancer and other new medical problems that limit my ability to function daily, yet in 5 minutes, without letting me explain all my medical history or looking at the medical records, he decided NOT to take the case based on me sitting in a chair. He stated that the new administration is denying a lot more cases and it sounded like he was asking me questions to quickly get rid of me, rather than asking appropriate questions to take the case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
