That with attorney John Chaney III, what a great experience. He is thoughtful and just not do cookie cutter law. He will listen to what your needs are and then explain how it relates to going by the book and the law. Great experience.

I've retained many law firms and lawyers for heavy business and employment matters. Ned Gold stands head and shoulders above all of them. He is conscientious, hard working, studious, prescient, an excellent writer, caring and oh so many other adjectives. And He Wins!! I have heard him argue in the Court of Appeals. He used his great sense of humor to get and keep their attention.

I hired Mike to handle my divorce...he wanted 3 thousand for the divorce 6 thousand for a asset investigation on my wife 8 hundred for a jury trial on my home foreclosure .The receptionist told me to file a grievance with the bar ass. that he isnt doing anything. I got no asset investigation and no jury trial on my forclosure. Even my complaint with the bar association could not get my money back.He also had the nerve to bill me an additional 21 thousand dollars after filling a property lean on my home sale.I would never use this law firm again. The bar association only canceled him from further billing me.

I highly recommend NOT hiring this guy. He told me if I fired the attorney I already had, he would do more to help me. He took a large retainer and did not do what he promised to do. He did things through the court without my knowledge and consent. I requested to meet with him to beg him to do the job he said he would do. When we met, he was insulting, rude, disrespectful and condescending. He laughed at me and made fun of my family. Having him as an attorney was a nightmare. When I finally had to fire him, his firm would not return any of the retainer.

I was at a turning point in my life a couple of months ago when I met Attorney Micheal Walton. My past was quickly catching up with me and a mistake I made almost 8 years ago was preventing me from living a normal life. I was scared but ready to face a bench warrant for a felony charge that I had been running from for so long. After some searching I found Attorney Walton. From our first consultation I knew that I had found the right lawyer for me. He was so understanding and compassionate and really made me feel as though he cared about the outcome of my case. Going to court was terrifying to me however Attorney Walton took the time to explain every step to in a way I understood which made me feel more comfortable. After three separate court dates Attorney Walton was able to restore my bond and eliminate my jail time in exchange for 12 months non-reporting community control. I now am able to work, drive and live a normal life without being afraid at every turn and I owe this all to my Lawyer. Thank you Attorney Micheal Walton!

He handled the charges appropriately and mitigated the damage to misdemeanor from felony charges. His followup to ensure that the case was fully closed did not happen. His knowledge of the full law and ramifications of outcomes were not fully within his scope. Intent was good though. Aspects of his shortcomings cropped up years later to haunt me.

I was going for a run through Perkins Park late one night and took a break at one of the benches to check my fantasy football league. A large man approached me from behind and began making conversation. I recognized him instantly as the lawyer who works across the street from the restaurant I work at and always orders 3 triple cheeseburgers and onion rings for lunch. I don’t believe he recognized me. It was odd but friendly enough at first. He smelled of alcohol and kept inching closer and after a while I noticed he had an erection. It got real uncomfortable so I tried to leave. He grabbed my arm and said, “I’m so lonely.” Then he tried to kiss me. I pushed him off me and ran home. Can’t really speak to his abilities as a lawyer but this was a creepy experience to say the least.

Mr Fowler looks like a lawyer talks like a father, and he is very good listener. I retained John for my case, and he and his firm worked very well with me leaving me very satified with his and his firms capabilites, yet John and his partner at the time (I still believe they are partnered today) Jeffrey Goodman were both thoughtful and direct while still being kind and compassionate. John rates were fair and not overbuffed with creme, and I felt he really was doing a good service for his clients. This was something that went against every stereotype of a lawyer; therefore, I felt I ought to give him a thumbs up and share what he and his firm did for me.

Ms. Sopkivich was one of the worst lawyers I have ever worked with. Not only did she not help me with my case. She in fact made issues much worse by agreeing to issues she had never discussed with me. She is money driven and cares not for her clients well being or outcome but rather for herself. She has also been disbarred for her past actions. Be weary of hiring this monster.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
