Another attorney in this office was recommended. Unfortunately, he was not taking new clients. I settled for Damian Nash. It proved to be a terrible decision. The hallmark of an effective attorney is excellent communication skills between the attorney, his staff, and his clients. An attorney should keep clients updated on all developments, and thoroughly explain legal terms and the processes to ensure they are understood. Equally important is having competent, responsible, and dependable office staff who will forward all forms of communication to the attorney. All of these were blatantly lacking. Important emails were overlooked and not sent to the attorney. The attorney met my inquiry regarding these issues with anger and a defensive attitude. Damian Nash was unresponsive, uncommunicative, and displayed an unprofessional response to my concerns. I WOULD NEVER RECOMMEND HIM TO ANYONE. I am a businesswoman who treats clients with the respect they deserve. He needs to do the same!!!

My name is Scott Coutu, I had Joel Chase as a lawyer and not only did he do very well for me he helped me change my life. The experience that he has made him a respected man with prosecutors as well as his clients all you have to do is look up his past and find out that he is the best lawyer in New England. And what I mean by being respected by the prosecutors is that they know he knows the law inside and out and will not sell you out like other lawyers in Rhode Island I could go on but I would be writing for days I can’t say enough good things about him . I’m gonna end this by saying that he is worth every dollar because he won’t take a deal he will always protect your wrights till the end.

The reason I am writing this review is because I was in a car accident. After receiving physical therapy for 3 months, the therapist ended my treatment informing me that I was healed (which also coincidentally was the same time when my medical benefit on my car insurance ran out), when in fact I was still very much in pain.My bills were starting to add up and I felt like I needed representation. My husband was seeing a chiropractor at the time for separate issues, and the chiropractor had recommended that I see Ann Sheeley for representation.Ann was initially very personable, she promised to deal with my medical providers on my behalf, negotiate down my medical bill repayments, and obtain the best possible settlement from the other party’s insurance agent. She told me to send all bills directly to her office, and she would contact them and let know this was part of a settlement, to avoid receiving any collection notices. She told me I should worry about getting well and she would take care of the rest.During my initial meeting discussing my medical condition and state of discomfort, she recommended that I see a chiropractor, and just happened to recommend the same chiropractor that had recommended me to see her. This is important to note that she advised me to not use my personal health insurance plan during my 3 month treatment plan. As my treatment progressed however, I continued to receive medical bills and collection notices from medical providers (after I had submitted them to her office). After following up with them multiple times, it was clear that her office did not put the liens that she promised. When we received the first settlement proposal statement, it was very confusing and the numbers didn’t make any sense. It turned out there were multiple errors regarding payments to the medical providers, the amounts payable to the medical providers did not agree with my actual bills, and none of the medical bills had been negotiated as promised. After an hour and half office visit she promised to negotiate my medical bills. She contacted me a few days later only to have not taken care of all of my bills. This is when she got very nasty with me on the phone.I noted that it was odd that when I requested to negotiate down my medical bills, she became very defensive about negotiating the chiropractor’s bills over anybody else. She spent very little of her time actually listening and more time talking over me.We went back and forth for nearly a month negotiating the final sums owed to my providers.Nothing about the whole process was simple, or made easy for me.I spent hours speaking to my personal health insurance company, and to my medical providers. This is when I learned that the advice Ann Sheeley had given me was poor. According to my health insurance adjuster, a provider is obligated to file a claim with the health insurance, which would have resulted in a lower, automatically negotiated payment amount.Since Ann advised me not to use my health insurance, it resulted in my owing much more to my medical providers (but particularly to my chiropractor) than I should have been.Upon my realization of this injustice, I felt terribly sickened that I had been taken advantage of and at that point I just wanted the ordeal to be over. The only positive statement that I can make is that when further errors were uncovered on the settlement statement, which resulted in additional payment to my health insurance company, she was honorable enough to take it out of her fee instead of my amount. When I finally agreed to sign the settlement statement, I was relieved to finally put this behind me. However 5 weeks later, I continued to receive another collection from a medical provider.Upon following up, I discovered that Ann had promptly paid the chiropractor’s bill after receiving the settlement, but had not paid any of the other medical bills. She finally paid all of the other bills after I contacted her office several times that week. My advice record all phone message and or conversations thankfully I have this.

Took CASH as the retainer. He said to give him more as it lessens the amount potentially available to the ex wife. Give back the excess at the end. Well, once he had the cash it was all gone!!! Padded the expenses. Took 20K and did nothing for it. Then asked for another 5k to finish....... Are you kidding me, a thief amongst lawyers. Tried to get in touch with him when the ex came to try and empty the house I just bought again.... he was no where to be found!!! Terrible job, thief and really classless. I guess CASH taints even lawyers who are supposed to be protecting you.

Family Court is a dynamic all its own. You never know what you are going to get. Divorce is an emotional roller coaster. I have never met a more empathetic person who really understood what I was going through. Facing these issues is stressful enough When you have an attorney who actually has your back you feel like you can get through it. He is accessible 24 hours a day and his staff are very courteous and respectful. He always returns my emails calls and texts, even on the weekend. When the divorce was finalized, I felt like I was very well represented by Sangiovanni.

Bill Harsch was hired help a citizens group combat a massive housing development project in rural town. The project required massive variances, was contrary to the town's Comprehensive Plan and was destined to destroy the community in which was sited. The project was being railroaded through the approval process by town officials. Harsch was hired at the last minute. He did a masterful job. The Zoning Board denied the application despite a barrage of legal threats from the developer.

Beware of this attorney. He was referred through an agency and did not adhere to original agreement, very forgetful, multiple errors in documents and sending and receiving emails. Withdrew from my uncontested divorce due to billing issues. Amount for uncontested divorce quoted as most likely retainer fees, after retainer was exhausted he "required" another retainer???? After retainer it was to switch to hourly rate, that was not adhered to, discussed and i was told more money or he would withdraw as he does not do "pro bono" work, paid $3500 and he never finished my case, withdrew, i went to court unrepresented and out a lot of money for nothing. He now is threatening to sue me as i owed him $20 (which originally i was sent a credit of $20 invoice) and it is past due so automatically up over $300+. Do not be lured into his kind demeanor and trust his "words", general reassurances that he will work with you if finances are an issue. He will leave you hanging if you cannot pay. Totally unethical attorney.

I am in a very sensitive situation with a Father that had to be court ordered to even be apart of his son’s daycare. I’m in this contradicting situation of wanting my child to have a Father and needing to protect my child. I set simple boundaries as this will be a process due to the circumstances of waiting for a Father to mature and even as a single Mother who should personally understand this process avoids the emotional trauma I face and creates more burden by creating her own agenda. There is a NCO and the agreed client refuses to show up for modification. A Family Court order can’t supersede a NCO however herself and Christopher Lambert disregard the terms to modify to advance a client who financially has more access to funds than I can. Both Providence and Kent County Judges have not yet modified due to a lack of accountability on the Fathers end. I am not asked to continually go to hearings he refuses to modify and Stephanie has not created a reflective plan on his lack of agreed terms due to spite.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
