Screwed up my case from the beginning. I had sustained a rotator and cervical injury from the same incident and he litigated them as two different injuries in two different time cases. This lengthened my resolve at settlement and vocational retraining. I did eventually win my case as I knew I would. But there were ongoing training issues I wanted addressed that he was flippant to and I eventually fired this guy and took on the case myself. Upon winning a fight for compensation pro se I was made aware that Ward made a approximate $5000 mistake in compensation that I should have been awarded from the onset. It seems that Ward took the word of the insurance carrier as to what my weekly retraining amount should be instead of actually calculating it himself. This was brought to my attention by one of the ALJ's that presided over my case. Approximately $5000 mistake! I am wondering how many other people got screwed over the years due to his negligence as I did?

Attorney Menden is extremely unprofessional, unorganized and unprepared. She told me to take a deal before even looking at the criminal complaint. She does not respond to phone calls, nor mail sent to her. I asked her almost two weeks ago to step down so I can get a new attorney, and she has still failed to do so, which is holding me up in the court process, infringing on my constitutional right to a speedy trial. Overall this has been a terrible experience. Ms. Menden is by far the worst lawyer I've ever had. Avoid her at all costs. I don't want anyone else to get stuck with her as an attorney, even if appointed like in my case, being she is a State Public Defender.

In my opinion, Attorney Melissa Pehl caused disappointing representation in our guardianship of the estate case. Attorney Pehl's office was in ciaos with a lack of office staff, which greatly reduced efficient work in my case. Attorney Pehl should have stepped up to meet her own responsibilities as a professional who needed to meet deadlines, and sadly this did not happen. The attorney made comments to me about arranging the court date around her own vacation and others in the court, but never thought to ask me about my possible summer vacation time and when might be a good date to schedule the case. Additionally, Attorney Pehl, was asked on the phone and via email to send me an itemized billing statement and it was never sent. The worst of her work, in my onion, was her lack of meeting statue timelines and how she sent private court documents. Attorney Pehl, did not send out necessary required notices to others in a timely manner. The notices were to be sent with a ten day notice, prior to the hearing date, unless a waiver was signed. One person received the notice less than 20 hours before the hearing and the second person received notice less than 30 minutes prior to the hearing. Additionally, a notice was sent with non encrypted email and was not faxed, or sent securely. Due to her last minute gathering of documents, she was very late to arrive to the hearing. After the hearing, Attorney Pehl, reminded me that if I withdrew from the petition that I would be billed for the entire case, rather than the Ward's trust. This was something that I already was aware of. I found Attorney Pehl's verbal and written attempts of persuasion to be extremely unprofessional and close to crossing a line of almost harassing. I personally, felt that her reminding me of the billing responsibility was a rather unethical way to try to convince me to continue working with her. Attorney Pehl, verbally said she would not charge for some of her mistakes. After six months, she mailed out a bill that was never itemized and there was no way to determine if I was charged for the time that she verbally said she would not bill for. Again, I phoned her office to ask for an itemized billing statement and never received it, nor did I receive a return phone call. Also, Attorney Pehl, told me the morning of the hearing that she forgot to check off an identified item on the initial petition paper that was an important part of the petition. However, she said that she wrote it on, but missed checking it on the newer state form. If Attorney Pehl, would have taken time to review the documents with me prior to sending them to court, this error may have been noticed ahead of time. I fired Attorney Pehl, and decided not to proceed with the guardianship of the estate, due to her multiple problems. Her careless work left me feeling uneasy about proceeding with a life-changing action for my family member with an attorney who was so negligent.

I hired Jennifer Wall in good faith to represent me in what should have been a relatively simple divorce. Working with her was an absolute nightmare. I don't know what else to say, so I will post the grievance letter I filed with the OLR after it became clear she was unable or unwilling to represent me (and she charged me handsomely for her non-work). "I am writing this grievance because I believe Attorney Jennifer Wall, whom I hired to represent me in a divorce hearing, violated several rules of professional conduct. I am honestly concerned about her ability to represent clients. My case was a relatively simple divorce, but I can’t imagine the damage she could cause in a case where custody or other more pressing issues were involved. Her lack of diligence in working on my case was a major concern. She made one initial proposal and then made no further attempts to resolve my case. She had no contact with my husband or his representation until a few days before the pretrial conference. Per her own invoices, she did no work and had no communication about my case for over 6 months between August 2021 and January 2022. She had stated that if we came to an agreement, we could have used that February date to make the divorce final. Because she failed to act on my behalf, my case was now postponed until June, causing me unnecessary distress. I also have had a change in income during these delays that has the potential to negatively effect the outcome of my case. There were periods of extreme non-responsiveness. The most egregious and distressing for me occurred between the dates of 6/18/21 and 8/6/21. During this time, I was under the impression there was a hearing the first week of August. I inquired about it repeatedly with emails and phone calls and only received a response when I threatened to file a complaint. It turns out the hearing has been moved, but this was extremely distressing to me. There were numerous other times during her representation where I emailed and called the office persistently with no replies for weeks at a time. She had no communication with me between August 9, 2021 and January 4th, 2022. In addition, I discovered that she had forged an email to make it appear a delay was not caused by her. I received initial emails from her assistant on 3/1/21 and 3/3/21. On 4/28/21, Atty Wall claimed she was “re-forwarding” that email to me because I had failed to sign a document, claiming this was why she had not taken any actions on my case. When you compare the original and “re-forwarded” email, it is clear that they changed the email to include the omitted request and attachment. Lastly, she refused to provide me with invoices without the threat of reporting her. I received only 2 invoices between February 2021 when I retained her and March 2022 when it became clear she was unable or unwilling to work on my case. In both instances, she did not respond to repeated requests via phone and email until I threatened to file a formal complaint."

While meeting with attorney, Anne M. Iselin, she was unclear as to what the next steps should be for me regarding a speeding ticket I received. She gave me options on what I should do; however, with this being the first time I consulted with an attorney, she did not provide any extra information for me to pursue the next steps. Furthermore, instead of helping me understand my next steps, she grew irritable and resorted to belittling me. All in all, it was a very unpleasant experience and I would not recommend her services.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
